Newb Guardian question

I'm playing a Guardian for the first time and I'll be leveling almost exclusively solo. I assume I should trait into the red line for solo leveling. Should I use a shield in Red Line or will I have sufficient survivability for solo leveling without it? Is the added survivability of having a shield worth the trade-off of weaker dps using a 1-hander? Sorry if these questions seem really basic (aka stupid) but this is the first time I've leveled a Guard.

Really comes down to personal preference.

If you are not going to do the higher landscape difficulty via the new system they put in last week, a 2hander will absolutely more than suffice in survivability + alot more dps.

If you want to dabble into higher tier landscape difficulty then it comes down feeling it out and seeing what you like. Sword and board will absolutely be slower but yes more survivability. So you can try out 2h and if you feel like you are dying too much then swap to sword and board. And if you stop dying but it is taking way too long to kill stuff, maybe go back to the 2h and work on your rotation to kill things before they kill you/get practice at surviving with the 2h.

In summary, try them both and see what you like! But if you do not increase landscape difficulty, 2hander will absolutely be just fine and a lot more dps

I've personally always been a fan of sword and board purely because it fits the aesthetic that I get in my mind when I think of a big beefy tank going toe to toe with a monstruous foe.

That being said, I play my guardian (currently level 21) on landscape difficulty 3 - Fearless. It's challenging and fun, but I can definitely see someone not turning on landscape difficulty and just enjoying the game because honestly, it's going to take my guardian a very, very long time to get to max level (if I ever do) at the rate I am going with the landscape difficulty.
