Mac: Instructions for installing and running LOTRO with OneLauncher

To get a quick overview of all the different methods for running LOTRO on a Mac, see the first paragraphs of this thread:

What is WINE?
Wine Is Not an Emulator. Using WINE does not run Windows on your Mac nor is Windows installed on your Mac. From the user's perspective, it "tricks" Windows programs into thinking that they are running in Windows OS while "tricking" MacOS into thinking it is running a Mac program rather than a Windows program. Because there is much less back-end processing going on, more of your Mac's power can be used to run LOTRO rather than running an emulation environment and Windows itself, allowing LOTRO to run as well or better on your Mac as it would on a Windows computer with similar specs. Emulators do have better compatibility with a wider variety of Windows software but since LOTRO does work in WINE, it is the better choice for most Mac users.

What is OneLauncher?
You might know that June Stepp has for years maintained a free application called OneLauncher which is a replacement for the LOTRO and DDO installer and launcher applications. It also has a built-in manager for plugins, skins, and music. As of January 2026, OneLauncher includes complete support for MacOS.

OneLauncher will install a bespoke version of WINE which is specifically tuned to provide the best performance for LOTRO. It will then allow you to choose an existing LOTRO installation, even an old one or one copied from another computer – any other computer, even a Windows or Linux machine. Or you can choose to have OneLauncher perform a fresh installation of LOTRO.
–OneLauncher is easier to use than any other free form of WINE for installing and running LOTRO on a Mac, the process is as automated as possible.
–OneLauncher produces performance which is equivalent to the current version of Crossover (as of January 2026) which is a commercial product.
–Crossover will be updated more quickly in response to changes to MacOS and the LOTRO game client. It is much easier to adjust some of the WINE options using Crossover. And a Crossover subscription includes access to professional technical support. But Crossover is not free.

A- Download OneLauncher.
1- Go to lotrointerface.com, type "OneLauncher" into the search field at the upper-right of the screen, hit your return key. You will be brought to this page:
2- Do NOT click the big DOWNLOAD button on that page, that will download the Windows version of OneLauncher. You do not want the Windows version.
3- Scroll down to the "Description" text and look for the MacOS section.
4- If you have an Apple-CPU Mac (such as the various M-series), click on arm64 (Apple Silicon). If you have an Intel-CPU Mac, click on x86_64 (Intel). If you don't know what kind of CPU your Mac has, create a new thread of your own here in Technical Support and ask for help figuring it out.
5- When the download is complete you will find the OneLauncher application in your ~/Downloads folder (or wherever you have your web browser set to deposit downloads) and a .zip file in your Trash. You can empty the Trash if you wish.
6- Move the OneLauncher application to wherever you wish for it to be. I like /Applications/Games but you might prefer to move it to some other location such as ~/Applications/Games. OneLauncher will work no matter where you put it.
7- You might wish to drag OneLauncher down to the Dock so that no matter where you put it, you can launch it easily with a single click from the Dock.

B- Run OneLauncher for the first time.
1- Double-click the OneLauncher icon (or single-click it if in the Dock).
2- The OneLauncher icon will bounce in your Dock for what might seem to be a long time, at least several seconds. Your Mac will then complain that it can't verify OneLauncher.
OneLauncher-01.JPG

This is normal for any Mac application released by someone who isn't registered as a developer with Apple – which costs money and so many small developers choose to not register with Apple. Click the DONE button.
3- Go to System Settings->Privacy & Security. Scroll down to the SECURITY section. Look for ""OneLauncher" was blocked to protect your Mac." Click the OPEN ANYWAY button.
OneLauncher-02.JPG

4- A permissions dialogue will pop up asking if you are super-duper pinky-swear sure that you want to open OneLauncher. Click the OPEN ANYWAY button.
OneLauncher-03.JPG

5- You will be asked to enter your MacOS user account password. Enter it.
6- OneLauncher will open! And you will never have to go through this process again unless you download a replacement/new version of OneLauncher.
7- Whew! The hard part is done. You probably don't even need the rest of these instructions! But below are instructions you can follow if you wish.

C- One-time setup of OneLauncher.
1- Choose your preferred language then click the NEXT button.
OneLauncher-04.JPG

2- You now need to decide if you want to use an existing installation of LOTRO or download and install a fresh installation of LOTRO. If you have a working installation of LOTRO on your Mac already, there is no need to use the bandwidth to download 60gb of data or wait for a full installation to be performed, an existing installation will work just as well. If you have another computer with an existing installation of LOTRO, regardless whether it is a Mac or Windows or Linux machine, you can copy it over to your Mac. You can put it anywhere you like, your Mac and OneLauncher and LOTRO itself don't care where it is – even an external drive will work.
3- If you are installing from scratch, go to D. If you are going to use an existing installation, go to E.
OneLauncher-05.JPG

D- Installing LOTRO from scratch.
1- Click the INSTALL NEW GAME button then click on The Lord of the Rings Online. Note that you can choose to install the "Public Preview" version also known as the Bullroarer version – do not do this unless you wish to play only on the Bullroarer test server. You can always install the "Public Preview" version later. For now, install the "normal" version of The Lord of the Rings Online. Note that you can also install Dungeons & Dragons Online, I will not be covering that in this thread but the process is pretty much the same. You can install DDO and its "Public Preview" version later, too.
2- In the INSTALL DIRECTORY section you can choose where you want the game to be installed. This can be anywhere on your boot volume or even on an external drive. Keep in mind that LOTRO requires about 60gb as of January 2026. The default location is ~/Library/Application Support/onelauncher/games/ed270458-b0e1-4fe8-b656-c49808034cdb-LOTRO/game_install but I prefer to use /Applications/Games.
OneLauncher-06.JPG

If you wish to use a different location, click the folder icon to the right of the INSTALL DIRECTORY field then navigate to the location you wish to use. As you can see in the screenshot, I chose /Applications/Games/OneLauncher LOTRO – I had to create the OneLauncher LOTRO folder.
3- Click the INSTALL GAME button.
4- A brief download process will occur. When it's done, click the NEXT button.
5- Click the FINISH button.
6- You will now see the main OneLauncher login screen. Neither WINE nor LOTRO are installed yet! Note that OneLauncher tells you, "The game needs to be patched. That can be done from the dropdown menu on the Play button."
7- Choose the game world to which you wish to log in, enter your account name and password, decide if you want OneLauncher to save your account name and/or password (doing so is faster and easier every time you want to play but is less secure because anyone who sits down in front of your computer will be able to log in using your saved credentials).
8- Click the little down-arrow to the right of the PLAY button and choose to PATCH.
OneLauncher-07.JPG

9- A blank window will appear. Click the PATCH button near the bottom of the window.
10- You will see WINE being downloaded. WINE will be installed. When WINE is complete the download and installation of the game will begin. If you see some red text on the screen complaining that something couldn't be downloaded you can safely ignore that, the download will be reattempted until it is complete. As long as you continue to see progress in the window, please do NOT click the ABORT button. Allow the installation to complete.
OneLauncher-08.JPG

11- Have patience, this is a big installation. Some people with very good Internet and a good connection to LOTRO's installation servers might get it done in 30 minutes, for others it requires a couple of hours, some people require many hours/overnight, and some folks even need several days. This has nothing to do with OneLauncher and everything to do with the amount of data that has to be downloaded, your network, and how well your network is able to communicate with LOTRO's installation servers.
12- When done, you can click the PLAY button. OneLauncher might tell you a second time that "The game needs to be patched. That can be done from the dropdown menu on the Play button." If so, do it again. This will be LOTRO patching itself to the current version so you can log in and play.
13- When that's done, you can click the PLAY button and... play the game!
14- If you are asked to grant permission to access a folder such as DOCUMENTS or to use your microphone, you MUST grant those permissions. You will be asked for permissions only the first time you use OneLauncher to run LOTRO.
OneLauncher-09.JPG

E- Using an existing installation of LOTRO.
1- Click the ADD EXISTING GAME button.
2- Navigate to your StandingStoneGames/The Lord of the Rings Online folder. I can't tell you exactly where this will be. I have an existing installation of LOTRO which I created with Crossover and I chose to have Crossover put it in ~/Applications/CrossOver Bottles/Bottles/LOTRO/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/StandingStoneGames/The Lord of the Rings Online. You might have yours inside an application package/wrapper so maybe something like /Applications/Games/The Lord of the Rings Online/Contents/SharedSupport/prefix/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/StandingStoneGames/The Lord of the Rings Online. Wherever it is, find that The Lord of the Rings Online folder and point OneLauncher to it.
3- There is no Step 3 (just trying to get the steps in E to match as closely as possible with the steps in D).
4- Click the NEXT button.
5- Click the FINISH button.
6- You will now see the main OneLauncher login screen. WINE is not installed yet!
7- Choose the game world to which you wish to log in, enter your account name and password, decide if you want OneLauncher to save your account name and/or password (doing so is faster and easier every time you want to play but is less secure because anyone who sits down in front of your computer will be able to log in using your saved credentials).
8- Click the PLAY button. If your existing installation of LOTRO hasn't been run in a while, it will probably need to be patched. If so, proceed to Step 9. If OneLauncher doesn't tell you that the game needs to be patched, proceed to Step 10.
9- Click the little down-arrow to the right of the PLAY button and choose to PATCH. A blank window will appear. Click the PATCH button near the bottom of the window. Go to Step 11.
10- You will see WINE being downloaded. WINE will be installed. When WINE is complete the game client will be launched. Go to Step 14.
11- You will see WINE being downloaded. WINE will be installed. Then LOTRO will be updated. If your existing LOTRO installation requires patching, it might be quick if you used it recently or it could require a lot of data to be downloaded and a lot of install time if you haven't used it in a long while. Just let it complete if patching is necessary.

Notes:

–OneLauncher will work with any version of MacOS from MacOS 10.15.7 Catalina or later. It will not work when booted into any earlier version of MacOS. Before using OneLauncher or any other form of WINE to run LOTRO on your Mac, you should update to the latest release of your version of MacOS. For example, if you are running MacOS Tahoe 26.1 you should update to MacOS Tahoe 26.2 (which is the latest version of Tahoe as of the moment I am writing this, 02 January 2026).

–The first time you log a character into a game world you will probably notice very low frame rates and some stuttering. This will "settle down" after a few seconds or at most a few minutes. This should happen only one time, not every time you log in a character or every time you launch LOTRO. This is pretty normal for games running in WINE, once textures are cached in the WINE prefix the game will run smoothly.

–You will find potentially useful options in OneLauncher's preferences panel but if you just want to play LOTRO and are satisfied with where OneLauncher puts everything by default and how it behaves, you can ignore the preferences entirely. For example, you can use OneLauncher's preferences panel to set the OneLauncher application to hide itself while the client is running and to close itself after the client is closed. This is the "normal" launcher application's default behavior so if you usually run only one instance of the game client at a time this is an option you might choose to use to keep the OneLauncher window out of your way while you're playing the game.
OneLauncher-10.JPG

Check the box for CLOSE ONELAUNCHER WHEN A GAME IS STARTED.

–You can use OneLauncher's preferences panel to run the "normal" LOTRO launcher application, LotroLauncher.exe. There should be no special reason to do so, but that option is available if you wish to use it.

–OneLauncher automatically sets your game client to run in Full Screen Windowed mode. If you prefer to use Full Screen mode or Windowed mode, you can do so after you run LOTRO with OneLauncher for the first time, just use LOTRO's in-game OPTIONS panel to make that change if you wish to do so. I suggest that you use Full Screen Windowed mode unless you have some special reason to not do so.

–OneLauncher automatically sets your game client to use DirectX 11. OneLauncher installs and configures DXVK for you as part of its WINE installation because LOTRO runs best with DXVK. You must use LOTRO's in-game setting for DirectX 11 with DXVK, a setting of DirectX 9 will cause the LOTRO client application to fail to run in most cases. Do not change to DirectX 9 (or DirectX 10).

–Please be alert for any requests for permissions related to your Documents folder or your microphone. The LOTRO game client will not run, or will not run correctly, without these permissions. You must grant these permissions when they are requested. You should be asked for each permission only once.

–OneLauncher creates its WINE prefix (the folder where all the WINE stuff is saved) here:
~/Library/Caches/onelauncher

–OneLauncher creates its preferences folder here:
~/Library/Application Support/onelauncher

–If you would like help with OneLauncher or any other technical issue related to LOTRO, please create your own thread here in Technical Support. Please do not reply to this thread, create your own thread.

Hello! I got a 2023 MacBook Air recently with 8GB of ram and an M2 Chip and followed your guide, but am having an issue where the game doesn't ever open. I have gotten OneLauncher to work and have installed and patched, but every time after clicking play the launcher closes and the game never loads. The log on OneLauncher says Starting Game too. I made sure that I am on the most recent update, trusted and gave permissions to OneLauncher, have restarted my Mac a few times but I can't figure out what's wrong. When I installed I even named my files the same way, placing it in Applications and then a Games folder. Any ideas you have that I can try would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Gem of a post, thank you. My old Windows PC I used for LotRO died months ago and I decided not to replace it, sticking to just Mac from now on. Figured this was just another game I would have to give up on, but surprise, the one time I randomly decide to google this up posts this awesome post.

I can see you're a new forum member so maybe you can't create new threads of your own as I requested in the first message:
–If you would like help with OneLauncher or any other technical issue related to LOTRO, please create your own thread here in Technical Support. Please do not reply to this thread, create your own thread.
I don't want this thread filled with support requests from individual players which often require extended back-and-forth messages to reach a resolution. That tends to bury important information intended for everyone. If you can't create your own new thread, please send a PM to me.
–Start by confirming that you downloaded the arm64 (Apple Silicon) version, not the x86_64 (Intel) version.
–Go to ~/Documents/The Lord of the Rings Online/UserPreferences.ini, open UserPreferences.ini with TextEdit, look for the line GraphicsCore=X where X is D3D9, D3D10, or D3D11. If it is anything other than D3D11, please change it to D3D11 and then SAVE the file and QUIT out of TextEdit.
–Please tell me the exact version of MacOS you are booting.

edit: Forum member garsans's issue has been resolved.
