Game Error [105], [128], DirectX 9 Errors - SOLUTION/WORKAROUND

SYMPTOM
While adjusting video settings, or multi-tasking by alt-tabbing to other applications, LotRO crashes, generating "Game Error [105]" and/or "Game Error [128]" and then the "lotroclient has stopped working" error.

CAUSE
From a user perspective, it's always difficult to determine actual root cause. However, it seems that the catalyst for this issue is the latest "Windows Fall Creator's Update" combined with nvidia gpus (note: There are occasional reports from AMD users as well), and using DirectX 9 as the in-game selected "Graphics Hardware Level." Those using DirectX 10/11 in LotRO seem to be unaffected.

SOLUTION / WORK-AROUND
On your computer. . .
  • In your Documents folder, find the "The Lord of the Rings Online" directory.
  • In that directory, open the "Userpreferences.ini" file in notepad (or any text editor).
  • Locate "AllowFakeFullscreen" and make sure it is set to "True".
  • Locate "ForceFakeFullscreen" and change it to "True" (it is set to "False" by default).

. . . with that in place, saved, and the LotRO client launched anew, you should be able to alt-tab, switch between fulscreen and windowed mode, change video settings, and otherwise do everything normally. Note: This is a different setting than "screen mode" that is presented in the Video Options in-game. And "ForceFakeFullscreen=True" in your UserPreferences.ini will fix the errors specified in this thread for all "screen modes" including "Fullscreen (windowed)".

Best Regards,

Hurin

P.S. Last tested in May 2023. As of that date, this is still relevant/necessary to avoid errors specified above when running DirectX 9 graphics hardware level.

Thank you so much Hurin, you're a star. I tried to play the game on my laptop for the first time in ages and got this error. I didn't understand why, because I have DirectX 12 on it. I found your post, did what you suggested and all now works fine. Thanks again!

Sadly, in my case this did not help. I cant remember having any directX problems so far, but after the update from yesterday (lotro shop) i can not log in the game anymore, the error message 105 pops up. I tried this workaround without any visible change. What can i do? Wait for a bug fix? Any other ideas? I have Windows 10, directX v12.

are you running in the 32 bit client or 64 bit client? if running in 64 bit, try switching to 32 bit see if you are able to get into the game.

My Windows is 64bit and i think the lotro client too, but i do not know how to find this out and even less how to change it

Hey Hurin, thanks for this guide. I have managed to get LOTRO running because of it. I have run in to one problem, however. If I attempt to run the game with my screen resolution higher than 1680x1050 I am immediately alt tabbed out of the game. Is there a solution for this?

I have windows 11 64-bit with DirectX 12, but I had to install DirectX 9 to get the game to boot up.

That is, in my experience, a bit sensitive. It depends a bit on whether you are using Fullscreen, Windowed screen, or Windowed screen without borders.

Try different settings for your gfx adapter in the game options:

Mine is currently running on "Automatic" and seems to have no issues with resolution regardless of what I choose. I know people tend to recommend you to select the "proper" adapter in that list, just saying what is currently working for me.

The only other thing that helped, short of a complete reinstallation, was deleting userpreferences.in and let the game create a new one. You could also do a reset of the gfx, but that may trigger a new download of all those 33GB of gfx files...

Not sure. What resolution are you running your desktop at? Meaning, what's the underlying resolution? If you try to run the game at a higher resolution than the system is already set at, I could perhaps see something like this happening?

Are you able to run the game above 1680x1050 in windowed mode?

My error pop up differs from these. I have a 201 game error. I sent a ticket in about this bug. It logged me into the game the day before the update and all was well till after it. I have attempted other workarounds, not all because of my situation but anyway, I feel this is a game dev problem not my end.
Game Error 201

I also cannot get my game to FIND the correct folders to connect to, and there are like 2 OLD client patch files that look suspicious but I am not a tech so I can't know for sure.

I tried VPN which only works for a day then makes you pay to continue on PC for android is fine but I can't get a freebie for PC. Lol. They say free but then find out they are freemium or trials. The VPN worked but when I did finally log into game I could not get farther than the server listing and then it crashes as soon as I click the server I play on. Now the patch client is tryna repatch and fails every time.

Originally I reinstalled the game and all that and it still wouldn't download patches. The patches worked after trying the VPN workaround but then something went wonky after the 4th try clicking on Crickhollow server then crashing immediately happened. Now I'm stuck again with patches not downloading at all.

Thanks for the help Marancil. When I set the display adapter to my graphics card, the game runs in any resolution.

Hurin,
Although my issue was fixed by selecting the display adapter, I figured I would respond to you question to help others in the future.
Before changing the display adapter, I had to set my desktop resolution to 1680x1050. If it was any higher I would immediately get alt-tabbed out of the game regardless of the in game resolution setting.

Thanks again to both of you for your help.
