Part II: How to Cross the Roads
Your next challenge as a chicken is a real doozy. I've spoken with hardcore raiders who hold it in awe. It has been called one of the most difficult quest in the game. It has been called frustrating. Some of those frustrated players have called it names I cannot in good conscience repeat.
We are of course talking about Free Range. Also known as: Crosser of Roads.
How to Access Free Range
Free Range becomes available after you have completed the Flying the Coop quest chain, described in Part I of this guide. During Free Range, you will venture out as a golden-colored chicken, and will have a chicken play timer of 8 hours.
To complete Free Range, you will need to revisit all of the animals you spoke to during the Flying the Coop quests. You will also need to discover 24 Chicken Stones throughout Eriador (including Angmar and the Misty Mountains). Chicken Stones are small, flat, grey stones on the landscape. They are not selectable (i.e. you cannot use the Delete key to locate them).
The catch is this: you have to complete ALL of these tasks within your 8 hour time limit. You cannot complete it in bits and pieces. You cannot complete a little bit and come back to finish the rest another day. You must complete the entire thing in one sitting. If you exit the session play for any reason during the run, the whole deed resets and you must start over.
The shortest time I've heard someone report for completing Free Range solo was 4 hours. Coordinated group runs with friends acting as escorts/guards/tenders easily reach 6 hours.
As my old friend Mr. Tomeoric would say: Free Range is 98% travel and 2% sheer terror.

Strange Chicken Nests
Shire, Trollshaws, Misty Mountains, Evendim, Angmar... You need to cover a lot of ground for Free Range. Chickens cannot use ordinary methods (steeds, stables, fast travels) to quickly advance from Point A to Point B. Most of the time, you will need to run.
However, with Free Range, you will have access to a very special form of travel that is ONLY available to golden chickens: Strange Chicken Nests.
There are 6 Strange Chicken Nests scattered throughout Eriador. Each Nest is specifically tied to another Nest (making it a total of three pairs of two Nests). Chickens can use these paired Nests to quickly travel from one Nest to another.
Oatbarton Nest (Evendim 23.7S 67.8W ) <---> High Moors Nest (Trollshaws 33.1S 6.0W)
Trestlebridge Nest (North Downs 16.2S 53.6W) <---> Duillond Nest (Ered Luin 24.9S 91.9W)
Malenhad Nest (Angmar 2.2N 34.2W) <---> Nen Harn Nest (Bree-land 19.9S 41.9W)
Note that sometimes the Chicken Nests can be difficult to locate. Chickens can use the Delete key to attempt to auto-select a nearby Nest if it is not clearly visible right away.
Things to Keep in Mind when Free Ranging
- Non-chickens can NOT use these Strange Chicken Nests. So if you have escorts with you, plan ahead when getting ready to use a Nest to travel across the map!
- Chickens cannot communicate with non-chickens. To keep in touch with your escorts, you will need an out-of-game chat service such as Discord, Teamspeak, etc.
- Watch out for dangerous respawns, especially in Annuminas and the Misty Mountains. If non-chickens are killing enemies in the area, the enemies may respawn on top of you if you are not careful! Caution is key. Be aware of your surroundings and whether anyone else is questing in the area.
- Take care to avoid stealthed enemies. Apart from dangerous respawns, you are more likely to die from stealthed enemies than anything else. The biggest “hot spots” for stealthed enemies will be the High Moors, Angmar, and the area north of High King's Crossing in Evendim.
- In organized runs, you can train your escorts ("chicken tenders") to be smart about how they protect the chickens. "Uncle Rooster" Hologro suggests the "Gallina Formation", which you can learn more about on Hologro's blog post here.

Additional notes about avoiding stealthed enemies:
You can avoid the stealthed lynxes in the High Moors completely by making smart use of the High Moors Strange Chicken Nest.
You can keep yourself relatively safe from stealthed Tomb Raiders in Evendim and stealthed wargs in Angmar by staying on the road and taking the following precautions: Take it SLOW—don't rush. Give yourself and your escorts time to detect stealthed enemies. If your escort friends have any stealth-detection abilities, encourage them to use them. Additionally, encourage Hunters to use the Track Nature to ferret out anything that might be hiding. Recruit several escorts to walk along next to you and perform repeated aggro-taunts and area-of-effect skills. If any stealthed enemies are hiding nearby, they will be slain before they can attack you.
Mother Hen's Suggested Route
Many people have drafted suggested routes for completing Free Range. Your strategy for completing Free Range will depend on a lot of factors. Are you chickening alone or in a group? Are you attempting it solo or will you have an entourage of non-chicken helpers?
The following route (originally designed by me, "Mother Hen" Rozalinde, and later perfected by "Uncle Rooster" Hologro) has been used successfully many times, guiding dozens of chickens to complete the deed on our home server of Landroval. Uncle Rooster and I can guarantee that this route has the Sandson Seal of Approval! (Or it would, if that were a real thing.)
Note: this guide assumes an organized run with escorts (aka guards or "chicken tenders") along to protect the chickens. The same escorts do not need to be along for the entire run. Some parts are more difficult than others. I've indicated which parts of the run require the most help, so that additional reinforcements may come along only when needed.
Part I: Annuminas.
Escorts recommended: 4-8
Start at Sandson's Farm. Run North toward Evendim. Chicken Stone #1 on the stoop of Bag End along the way. Run North past Oatbarton and Dwaling. Jump into the water at High King's Crossing. Swim South to Annuminas.
Escorts will crash the Main East Gate of Annuminas and clear the courtyard of Angmarim. Chicken Stone #2 (17.4S 68.8W) tucked in a corner behind a tent. DANGER! RESPAWN! Wait for escorts to reclear the respawns. Head back to the lake and swim across to Gwindethrond, a.k.a. “The Blue Lady's cave.” Chicken Stone #3 just inside the entrance.
Swim North to the Evespires. Talk to Longbough. Swim South to Tinnudir. Take the road to Ost Forod. Chicken Stone #4 (7.9S 63.9W) near the top of the road Northeast out of the ruins.
RENDEZVOUS: Several escorts should break off and wait for the chickens at the High Moors Nest (33.1S 6.0W) outside the gates of Rivendell
Run back down to Oatbarton. DANGER! STEALTH! Have escorts on Stealth-Detection duty to protect against Stealthed Tomb Robbers between the Crossroads and High King's Crossing. (Optional alternate route: swim to High King's Crossing from Tinnudir.) Use the Oatbarton Nest 23.7S 67.8W to port to the High Moors. Remaining Escorts should use whatever means to travel to Rivendell as quickly as possible to rendezvous with the group.
Part II: Rivendell and the Misties
Escorts recommended: 4-6
Into Rivendell to talk to Roheryn at the stables. North to Gloin's Camp in the Misties. Pick up Chicken Stone #5 by the Task Board.

Wait for escorts to reclear the respawns. Backtrack to Gloin's Camp, then Rivendell (picking up Chicken Stone #7 by the Spire of Meeting on the way through Rivendell), then the High Moors nest. Nest Port back to Oatbarton.
Part III: The Shire

Free Range Rewards
“I completed Free Range and all I got was this lousy title.”
The only reward you get for completing Free Range is the title “Crosser of Roads”. But rest assured that this title comes with significant bragging rights. Precious few players have been able to complete Free Range. You could be one of them!
