ABC Songbook

Let's keep this thread strictly ABC, and use the Song Compilation thread for keymapped songs.

You should only be posting songs that have been tested in-game. Please don't clutter the thread with "Fix this please" posts. If you must request songs, please read the entire thread to see if it's already been posted, and don't repost requests: people can spend a lot of time to create/convert music, and if they do it for you, it's a favor, not an entitlement. Treat it as such, please.

You might want to check out http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...roup_id=173582. It will let you convert ABC to the keymapping of your choice. (Thanks to House_of_Dexter)

Official ABC website here: http://www.walshaw.plus.com/abc/ It has links to thousands of ABC format songs, SW that can import/export ABC, tutorials, etc. Comprehensive stuff. An overview of the LotRO Music System, and details about LotRO-specific ABC can be found in the LotRO Lorebook under Player Music System and ABC Notation.

Also, check out Giddily's Music Archive for a really nice collection of ABC music that was written to work for LotRO!

Now for the music. This is all I had posted previously on the beta boards.

Re: ABC Songbook

I've been searching around here, but....

OK, you put these into a file, then what? Sorry for being a little dense.

I asume there's an in-game command used to read and play the files?

You're not being dense: Nobody has said just how this is going to work just yet, except that in a future update, you should be able to do what you're saying...somehow.

Devs aren't saying anything more. They love watching us squirm.

Post Northman tested; LotRO client-server approved...

These have been checked out on a live server as of 2007-06-17. Several of these were written while playing LotRO and will not work well in other programs. All are intended for LotRO.

The =============== show where the division between songs are. Do not copy the =============== when copying for your own library and each song must be in their own file.

Re: ABC Songbook

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see what's playable and what's not. When the Big patch hits, I'll either color-code the unplayable songs I've posted (short term) and/or fix them to make them playable (long term). One can hope they'll all play, but I'm especially wary of the multi-voice pieces.

What the heck, though. At least people can still import them into something that supports ABC to listen or play around with them now, so it's not a total waste to post early.

Re: ABC Songbook

Perhaps this is because I sing and don't actually play an instrument in Real Life. (though I am learning the Piano thanks to the music system, so yay Lotro for that)

But I am completely clueless as to how I am supposed to read those files you placed there. If I was going to for example not just input them and let the computer play them, but actually plunk them out on my keys how would I go about doing that?

Sorry in advance if this should be easy to understand

ABC isn't something you're going to type letter for letter. It's more like reading sheet music (ABC website, with a tutorial, in my sig). "C" isn't the letter you press, but the note "C". Numbers and slashes following the notes indicate duration.

If you want to map ABC to a familiar keymapping, check out http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...roup_id=173582, courtesy of House_of_Dexter.

Re: ABC Songbook

Well I read through a bunch of the information in your Sig link, I just didn't understand what the | marks were for and why some letter are Caiptals and others aren't. Why some are in brackets and others arent's etc.

Also what all the various sections markers are for before the piece is listed.

Thanks for responding to this, it's just hard for me to see what you typed in relation to the actually scaled notes is all. The picture they showed converted as an example is what I am used to seeing.

Did a copy and paste to try to explain it better

Don't understand what this part is for or is it just to tell
The computer what to do when it's playing it?

Hard to visualize this as notes on a musical scale what's the difference between e and E. Where do they fall on the scale etc.

Re: ABC Songbook

I don't know if it's been posted for people "how", exactly to playback these files. Y'know... on their pc, before the update to LOTRO goes online. And without using a commercial notation program that can import ABC files. I did a quick search online and found a link from where you can download a program called "iabc". Open the program, cut and paste the songs posted on this thread into the box at the bottom left of the iabc screen, hit control-L to refresh the player, and "Export Midi..." from the Midi menu. Now you can double-click the MIDI file that was saved and play it back using Windows Media Player, Winamp, etc:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/abc/

If it turns out this was a redundant post, I apologize.

In brief:

The stuff in orange is header information, which tells the reader how to interpret the rest (and tell you what the heck the music is).

The different cases describe different scales.
C, D, E, etc is the scale below middle C
C D E etc is the scale of middle C
c d e etc is the next one up from that
c' d' e' is the next higher, etc.

A number following a letter indicats how many beats to hold the note. C2 gets held for 2 beats, C/2 (or C/) a half a beat, etc. The | define a measure just like in sheet music (which is what ABC is). z is a rest (no note played).

The rest you'll need to read the spec.
