Pressing attack and devastating blow crit question

I got to thinking the other day about the critical rating for DB and PA and it raised a question in my mind. There is a trait that gives those attacks +1200 crit rating and legacies that can give them over 400 crit rating each but can those buffs combined with things like relentless attack get the crit chance for those two attacks above the 15% cap? When I am trying to run in dps mode I'll usually have my crit chance around 11-12% depending on what jewelry I have on at the time but am I wasting points on those legacies and that trait slot if they aren't pushing me up to and over the 15% mark? I dont really understand the relationship between rating and chance enough to do the math myself or I would and if those buffs are just getting me closer or just barely up to the crit cap then I guess I'd keep them but I can help but wonder if I might be spending my legacy points smarter or traiting smarter. Does anyone know how this works?

Re: Pressing attack and devastating blow crit question

Yup, with Relentless Attack buff (upgraded with a legacy) my captain can reach 12% normal crit + 4% Devastating crit = 16% crit overall. Now for Devastating Blow and Pressing Attack, the trait itself would give you 3.33% (2/3) normal crit and 1.67% (1/3) Devastating crit. What happens here however is that the nrmal crit will be capped at 15% and won't get the extra .33% normal crit, however the .67 will be added to the Devasting Crit chance. The new total would be 15% normal crit + 5.67% Devastating crit = 20.67% (for DB and PA attacks only). You see as you go over the 15% normal crit, you get significant deminishing returns as anything extra would only get 1/3 of it realised and cumulate to Devastating critical chance, i.e. by ading the LI legacy for +435 (~2% crit chance) rating to Devatating Blow, you'd get only .66% Devastating crit only putting you on 15% normal crit + 6.37% Devastating, etc.

Re: Pressing attack and devastating blow crit question

So there actually might be some logic behind having the legacies on my weapon and not wasting points on them? If it's diminishing returns then maybe I'll just get them up a little ways and not waste too many points on the legacies or bother teiring them up at a reforge. Thanks for the repsonse Veeman, it's something to think about at least rather than just blindly pouring everything I can into the crit rating. Also, it sound like you understand the relationship of rating and %, would you mind explain it a little?

IMO, the logic is ALWAYS on the side of having legacies with ratings (crit, resist, whatever) on your LIs but NOT spending any points on them unless you don't have enough to spend them elsewhere (or nothing else worthwhile to spend them on). the reason for this is that it costs so much to max out one of those legacies for usually a >1% total increase from the base rank, so the benefit is really in having the base legacy. and in long fights i'm as likely to put the power buff on myself as the crit buff, so that's something to keep in mind as well.

generally speaking, a rating of 200-250 (i want to say more like either 220 or 240 to be more exact, but i don't recall for sure atm) translates to 1% at level 60.

I totaly agree.

All 3 Tactics Legacies are one point wonders. You get the most out of them for just having them. Leveling them to max will get you usually about 100+ rating which is insignificant so putting points into the cirt ones is a waste of legacy points.

Same for Tactics: In Focus. The amount of ICPR you get by maxing it is 10 or so, which is insignificant.

Which is why you get a buffing stick with buffing legacies on it and swap weapons to buff (out of combat). Definitely don't increase the Tactics legacies on your main weapon.

Haha so true. I'm suprised how few captains think of that

Re: Pressing attack and devastating blow crit question

i kinda think the oposite of you guys i see the crits on the weapon as a way out of using a trait if i have max tactics crit good gear and a good tier 6 dev or pressing on my weapon i will max that and not use the trait for 1200 to dev and pressing. instead i will use that on something like focused strikes to make sure i don't miss, or something entirely not melee like a healing or buffing trait. once your near enough to that 15% cap it doesn't make much of a difference having that trait on there. since another separate trait can be even more useful my policy is to make out the dev or pressing on a weapon and go the opposite way by removing the trait.

Re: Pressing attack and devastating blow crit question

Certainly an interesting way to go ydoc. Although with the gear that I usually have with me I wont see much higher than 12% crit chance WITH a maxed crit tactic buff and the war banner. I guess I just dont have my agility high enough and/or carry enough crit buff gear. The +450 or so that the legacies will give me just doesn't outbalance the +1200 if I'm needing the crits. Good thoughts though, in a pinch for that extra trait it would help to free up the +1200 one.

Re: Pressing attack and devastating blow crit question

well its not like you will always be in full dps mode, that +1200 crit trait is sure nice but if your not in a dps role you don't have that, but getting those crits to fire off defeat skills is no less important a role as when your healing or dpsing. so even in situations where you can't trait the +1200 to the weapon that dev or pressing i still a good option, HOH captain with a side of captain of war and defiance for groups still gets the buff from weapon.

That being said though i am told there are only 3 1st age halberds on the whole server of brandywine and i have 1 of them =p, it does infact have a dev blow crit on it which i plan to put at least 3-5 points into it although i am not going to max it.

Re: Pressing attack and devastating blow crit question

Hmm don't quite agree on not maxing out the tactics...there's no reason not to.

Just don't do it on your main weapon.

At first, I figured, "hey, it'd be cool to have the 'best' buffs." But then I realized that the best buffs were so marginally better than what you would have on a thirdthat IMO it's stupid to dump ANY points at all (unless they're left over and you have nothing else to put them into) into them. That's assuming that your main weapon is a 2nd or 1st age.

I simply cringe now when I see people who have upgraded relentless to 9 on their 1st age halberds. ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh lolz

lolz so do i or when a captain say a 1st age spear sucks when it has both buffs on it, as i check them and see no buff stick at all.

btw one of the nice things to have on your first age buff stick is +toarms as well, since you can swap it in and use it then swap it out you can manage a 27 second to arms buff of 25% dmg to some lucky champ or hunter in your group. and it should be easy to cap because you not useing it as a melee weapon so no dps increase.

Re: Pressing attack and devastating blow crit question

Question on this swapping thing. I have noticed that if I buff with a buff weapon, then swap to another the buff seems to change.

Specifically, I had a maxed out relentless buff stick, put it on everybody, then swapped out to the weapon I prefer to use. When I looked at everyone's buff, it was back to standard stat line for the skill. Are yall sure this swapping/buffing trick works, or am I missing something? Granted, I have only tried it with relentless.

Don't know the problem. Buffing with buff weapon then swapping to melee weapon has always worked fine for me.

Re: Pressing attack and devastating blow crit question

I believe the issue of the %'s changing occur with Telling Mark Legacies on mobs, but I have never had an issue with RA changing on toons. It has always stayed the same when I apply buff and switchout weapons.
