I'm really disappointed they blocked this with Book 2. Makes no sense.
Sure it does. Before book 2, Ratagast doesn't even know you. Why would he teach you something if you mean nothing to him. And Ratagast is really the only character so far that has those abilities.

Radagast.
I've done plenty of quests for him, just never finished Book 2.
Besides, the simple fact is that these are nothing more than pure fun skills that add no utility to the class. Blocking them with an annoying Book series is just ... bad.
Last night the Goblin King (can't remember his real name, but fourth instance into Goblin Town) dropped the cat. We killed him 3 times, but he only dropped it on the first kill. The humorous thing is that the hare is about 3 times faster than the cat, so don't expect him to keep up with you.

Agreed. As is, in my opinion, putting some pets exclusively in end-game content as rare drops (if this turns out to be the case). When I hit the level cap I will be moving on to my alts. The time I want to have and enjoy these pets (which have no impact on gameplay) is during the journey there (I'm presently at 35). I know, I know: Presumably they are not BoA, so I could buy them on the AH, and I know the price will probably come down over time, but it just doesn't seem right.
"There are many powers in the world, for good and for evil. Some are greater than I am. Against some I have not yet been measured. But my time is coming. "
The reason you have to complete book 2 is the storyline used my Radaghast in the pet chain only makes sense if you've completed it. If you read the quest text it will make sense as to why you had to complete book 2. It's the same reason you can't skip from book 7 to 11 without doing the others in between. It kinda sucks, but oh well.
I'm going to ask for some guildy help in better the quests done, thanks for the update.
Well, why not do book 2? What level are you? It's not very difficult. Find some newbies that need it and run them through.
There are a couple of problems.
First, I've been told it's not soloable even at 50. That could be untrue; I don't trust the source 100%. I'm nearly 46. I probably can't solo it. I'm rarely on when anyone I know is on anymore, and I'm not doing any quest that involves elites with a PUG.
Second, I dropped the quest about 3 months ago and am unable to pick it back up.

This is easily soloabe at lvl 50 especially with the new lynx pet and the ability to mez the undead, i breezed through it

Interesting. Maybe I'll try to get a GM to help me get the quest picked back up...for the 3rd time. I've been unable to communicate the problem so far. :/
You won't get any of the other pets other than the HARE anyway. Most are found in the level 40-50 dungeons.
Some of the pets are available from the reputation vendors - there's the sparrow in the elven reputation area, and I believe there may be one more somewhere, with the rest coming from drops from mobs.
I'm pretty sure you could solo the last instance of book 2. It might be good to take a guild member with you. In my guild runs of book 2 usually consist of a couple of 50s and two or three in their 20s needing to complete it.
A good way to go is to go into the lone lands and advertise, asking if anyone wants to join you for book 2. Tell them your'e a 46 lrm. I'm sure many will be eager to come with you. That way you'll be helping a few lowbies get their book 2 done, and you'll have some extra support on the tough parts.
I solo'd book 2 before the patch at 50. It's not too difficult, but don't get complacent because they are all grey. Good pet control is important, especially in the last phase of the quest.
Edit: Oh, the sparrow is cute. Small, of course, but nicely detailed if you zoom in, and tends to sing/chirp a lot as you run. I called him SoarOn... And the bunny, well, no other name would do except Vorpal

Edit: I thought it strange that when I ate the scroll it said you have learned the combat skill: Fox Speech. I have no pet bar or control over him that way.

FDR: Hold on, boys! I, for one, would like to hear what the blood-spattered young lady has to say.
Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical (2005)
I notice some people have changed the name on thier Hare. Might I ask how you did that? Right clicking mine or my Hares target does not have the normal rename in that menu.

You can rename your companion using the "/pet rename <petname>" command. There are other useful things you can do with /pet - take a look!
Also, I was in Urugarth last night and had the Tome of the Frog drop! He's much slower than the Hare, but that also provides for some fun opportunities - I will try to get a picture up soon.
it seems you can get a bunch of the tomes from high level bosses in instances my group got tome of the cat from forvengwath in BG every time while trying to get forvengwath's bane for our hunter
I won the auction for the pet snake at the auction hall. Unfortunately, I don't know where it was found, sorry. So my new friend Sammy doesn't like to follow me at all. He just sits there and stares. I think he's bugged =) If someone else gets the snake pet, post whether you have the same problem.
But here's a picture. It was kind of hard to get the right angle.
Good job guys, looks like all 8 have been found. On my other computer I'm going to start collecting pictures of them so I can add them to the topic
Looks like the tomes drop in high-level areas, since someone found a tome in Sarnur. A friend in-game found the fox but I didn't ask him where he got it, I will later. I'm very close to having the rep for the turtle, they lowered the rep on Honey-roasted chicken so I found out I have to make 18 more before I can get my little friend.
I don't know the process for getting something stickied or even if this should be, I think you're supposed to send a PM to Patience or something.

Agreed [that gating access to toy pets is bad]. As is, in my opinion, putting some pets exclusively in end-game content as rare drops (if this turns out to be the case). It doesn't seem right to me either. And not only because non combat pets are toys and should be able to be enjoyed before players reach the end game, but because this is yet another feed the gold selling and buying markets by yet again creating a monopoly market among the higher levels for items the lower lvls need (or in this case desire).
