anyone had much experience running lotro on an intel mac using a windows install via boot camp? it should just run as normal outta the box shouldnt it, if you are booting into windows that should just act like a standard windows machine as it's not emulated yeah?
Yup, you can set it to boot straight into Windows. Runs fantastic. Mac hardware is awesome.
I tried looking everywhere for error outputs and nothing comes up from running in a text window.
But how did I fix it you ask? The honest answer is... I have no idea!
However I did update to the newest Wine for Ubuntu Hardy from the wine website so that may have helped considerably.
I have mono installed for the launcher (that works very well now)
Somehow I got DX9c installed into wine via another game. (why it fully installed I have no idea. But I checked the registry and all the keys are there.. Go figure....)
I have an issue with sound where the vids play with sound but the game has no sound at all.
So other then the sound issue the game runs like a dream. I can run all the settings on Ultra high other then the DX10 settings. Beautiful game. Really it is... /cry
1. in the Wine config screen (its in the wine menu). Make sure that it works from there (i.e. hit the TEST button). If it does, proceed to point 2, otherwise try switching sound drivers.
2. in LOTRO under the audio options, might need to set the correct output there.
You have given me hope! Am a fellow OS X user... I have been thinking of reinstalling OS X anyway...so would you mind summarizing what worked for you??
This is what you need to download. Crossover Games. X11 (if you don't have it). Mono Framework (Mac Version) and fakeNET11.reg and LotroLinux.run
The last two can be found on the Lotrolinux.com website with the LotroLInux under download (get the standalone version.)
Create a new bottle in CXG and call it LOTRO (call it w/e you want but this is what I used.) Select Windows 2000 for the version. Now click run command from the Programs menu and type in regedit and hit Run. Then select Import (from the regedit menu, not CXG) and navigate to the FakeNET11.reg. Now if you somehow still have the setup thing then you can just transfer it, but I actually redownloaded it so I made sure I had the most recent version. You can download it using CXG as it will run in it. Once you have the folder with the .bins and the setup.exe, in Crossover go to the LOTRO bottle and click install software. Select Unsupported Software from the list and select your bottle to use. Then select install from installer file (not folder) and navigate to the setup.exe and it should install. (Unselect any options you see by using a Custom Install.) While it's installing go ahead and install Mono framework and then once LOTRO is installed (unselect all the options you see) click Run COmmand again but this type do the dropdown menu and select Open Shell. This should run some stuff and once it's done type mono then drag LotroLinux.run into that window so it should look something like:
mono /Users/MikeJones/Desktop/LotroLinux.run
That SHOULD open up a fancy little window. Select Lord of the RIngs ONline from the COnfig thing and then you should get an options Window. Make sure you select Crossover Games then Navigate to the Lord of the Rings Folder. It's probably somewhere like
/Users/MikeJones/Library/Application Support/Crossover Games/Bottles/LOTRO/drive_c/Program Files/ Turbine/ Lord of Rings Online.
Once you have the folder SELECTED click open and that should make Game Directory: The Lord of the Rings Online. Then click OK (most of the time I unselect HIgh-Res Graphix) then patch using the dropdown menu (you have to click apply) and once that's done, type in your info and select Login! And you should crash! Woot!
Now go to /Users/MikeJOnes/Documents/LOTRO and open up the .ini file in TextEdit. Change AllowFakeFullScreen=False and FullScreen = True then reopen the Launcher and you should be good to go! Now as for Configging your graphics. If you have a BA graphics comp like my Macbook this is what I did for best look and performance. I turned all frills off and then turned pretty much everything else up except for shadows, lighting, and post processing.
Thanks for the concise MacOS instructions, I've edited the first post and included them. Let me know if you'd like something changed. I presume the places where it says "MikeJones" is where the Mac user name goes? If so, I've edited that in the posted instructions - if not, I have to apologize for being too presumptive
Thank you so much!! I knew the basics of it all but I had issues with order and what-not...and having wine, CXG, and VMWare installed you get a little confused! Will try out soon. Thanks again.

Hope that works!
Thanks for the instructions, they were very clear and I managed to get to the launch screen (better than my previous tries). The problem after this was a message telling me that "Connection failed. You do not have the latest version of the client installed." Then it quits. I downloaded the installer fresh today, so I assume it's the latest version (if that's the client they're referring to).
Anyone else get this? I only have one more day left in my Crossover Games trial, and I'd like to see if this works (been trying for a few days).

The download is, as far as I know, not QUITE up to date. You'll need to let the launcher patch the game first (which may take a while), then launching should work.

Which launcher does the patch? The one that starts when you give the Terminal command? The LOTRO launcher itself doesn't give me an option to patch/update, it just quits.

Thanks again for your help.
The command line launcher and the GUI launcher both have built-in patchers. I don't use the GUI launcher myself so I am not entirely sure if it auto-patches on launch or if it requires manual patching.

Okay, thanks, I'll check this out and see if it works.
Well, I went through the newly updated OS X steps.
I got to the point where I need to patch before I hit an issue.
So...am I supposed to change the Program field in the options? Maybe I didn't edit the registry correctly... Help?
EDIT: I mistakenly picked xp rather than 2k for my bottle...is that my issue?
Probably one of the issues anyway - it needs to be set to Win2k... what issue did you run into? In the GUI launcher you need to set the game directory (Tools->Options->Game Directory)

I set the game path and changed Application to CXG. Below is the error message I get when trying to patch. I can't make sense of it.... Also, the GUI doesn't connect to the Turbine server every other time.

The font warning should be ignorable. The path error however... you did point the launcher to the correct path for LOTRO, right?
Hmmm good question. It appears to me that ALL you have to do is select Application "Crossover Games", select the proper Bottle, set the Game Directory and leave everything else as-is. I don't think you're supposed to change the "wine" executable or anything else.

That is the way I interpreted it as well and those are the default values.
EDIT:
So...what will happen when I hit "Accept" to patch? It should look like nothing, right?

Nope... if you hit accept, it should start patching (and says so in the window). After patching, you hit quit and that's it... the GUI is "a bit" awkward in that regard. I'll make a screenie if you like (should look the same on Mac and Linux)

Well that all makes sense; no screenshot needed! I was just making sure it wasn't patching and I didn't realize it. I keep trying combination options with no avail... My copy of the trial kinda expired. I plan on buying CXG if LOTRO runs decently on it though. But I take my computers date and set it back a while so the trial thinks its still able to be tried. Should that effect the patching??
Yeah, it surprised me too! I never had it work on PC, but Mac....lol. Though I don't know if its messing with the patching.
I'd be surprised if it makes any difference to patching. I think I'll have to use the office Mac again to try and write a thorough walk-through... tho djet13's is, IMO, quite concise.

I'll try downloading a new trial client...am using one thats about 3 weeks old.
In OSX I am having problems with squares showing up (in place of the fonts) when I launch the lotrolinux.run file in the terminal. I don't know what the slections say because I cant read the GUI. Anyon know what my problem is...I'm assuming I am missing the fonts but dont know how to fix it. Here is my error

It seems you are missing a part of Mono. Since its easy enough to do, I suggest redownloading and installing Mono.
If I need cocoa too I have no idea how to use that.
I've tried doing this like it says, but it says no directory exists.
pango-querymodules > '/Library/Frameworks/Mono.framework/Versions/Current/etc/pango/pango.modules'
Is there a way someone could send me the files in that pango directory?
Well I made the mistake of going away on vacation right after writing the guide.....
I'll try to answer any questions...... one thing is, to get mine to work (I got a strange error) I archived and reinstalled everything (partially because I screwed a lot of stuff up on my comp by installing other stuff) and then it worked, so if you're really desperate (haha) to get LOTRO on your comp doing that would probably work..... unless you're making an error in installation.
If not install Windows and use boot camp.
I just use CXG cause I can't stand using XP.... (not to bash Windows)
I'm thinking of putting the guide into the newly created community section of the lorebook... then everyone can edit it with details on how to get it to work. Unfortunately I don't use Macs enough to be too much help, and my approach "it worked for me" just doesn't cut it.

Thoughts? Yes? No?
The method for Linux seems to work quite well from what I am reading here. I believe that would make a good addition to the lorebook! Though I think Mac should wait a bit...

I did mod the guide a little so if you wanna replace it in your main thread here it is.
This should run some stuff and once it's done type mono then drag LotroLinux.run into that window so it should look something like:
mono /Users/[Your User Name]/Desktop/LotroLinux.run
That SHOULD open up a fancy little window. Select Lord of the RIngs ONline from the Config thing and then you should get an options Window. Get your correct "LOTRO" bottle and make sure you select Crossover Games then Navigate to the Lord of the Rings Folder (By default your "explorer" should be in Program Files so you should just have to go down two levels to get to the LOTRO folder). It's probably somewhere like
/Users/[Your User Name]/Library/Application Support/Crossover Games/Bottles/LOTRO/drive_c/Program Files/ Turbine/ Lord of Rings Online.
Woot!
Now go to /Users/[Your User Name]/Documents/LOTRO and open up the .ini file in TextEdit.
If I can't get the fonts to show up using the GUI mono launcher...would it work to try and use the CLI one. Can I run that using CXG on OSX? If so how to I run the script?
I think my friend has OSX 10.4 if that makes any difference.

Dang you got me there. I've used the CLI launcher on OSX eons ago, and vaguely recall that I had some trouble with missing shell commands (wget I think being one of them)... I don't quite recall exactly what the heck I did back then though, sorry.
Missing fonts is, in my experience, either a missing font renderer (if Mac has that?) or straight out a missing font file.
@djet13: Updated the main entry, many thanks! I'll try to get the entry into the lorebook tomorrow. Today work just wore me out
