Riders of Rohan Launch Day FAQs
Please feel free to copy and paste from this, link this thread in chat, or add your suggestions to the end!
Q: "The launcher is stuck at Examine Programs or Examine Game Data. What should I do?"
A: This happens when the patch servers are overloaded. Let the launcher continue trying for a few minutes. If it doesn't continue, close the launcher, wait 5 minutes, and then start the launcher again.Q: "What can I do while I wait?"
A: How about watching the official Launch Trailer or reading the release notes for Update 8, known issues, and extra patch notes for patch 8.0.1.Q: "Where can I download the native MacOS client?"*UPDATED* Q: "I'm using DirectX 10/11 mode and my client keeps crashing every couple hours. How can I fix this?"
A: As of patch 8.0.1 on Wednesday, some changes have been made to correct memory issues with the DirectX 10/11 rendering systems. If you temporarily switched to DirectX 9, you may want to try switching back again with Options > Graphics > Graphics Hardware Level.Q: "Where do I begin?"
A: You can begin either with the Epic Story in Lothlorien or start questing directly in Rohan.Q: "How do I get to Rohan?"
A: Ride south from Stangard or Parth Celebrant in the Great River until you cross the bridge into the northern Wold. Continue on to Langhold.Q: "Where does the Epic Story continue?"
A: Volume III, Book 7 begins with Galadriel at Caras Galadhron in Lothlorien. It will eventually take you to the East Wall, bypassing the Wold temporarily. You can start Book 7 without finishing the earlier books.Q: "I can see a quest NPC's ring on my radar map, but it's invisible in the game world. What should I do?"
A: This is probably a phasing issue. You can select the NPC by clicking on its ring on the radar map. Then press U to interact with the NPC. This has been observed to happen with Luidhros in Book 7, Chapter 1.
Q: "Why can't I finish the quest 'Rohan Awaits'?"
A: You probably finished the Langhold quest arc already. "Rohan Awaits" must be completed first. You can safely continue questing in the Northern Wold. It's a known issue.Q: "I'm a Lore-master. Why was my sword unequipped?"
A: Your class legendary traits have changed. Visit your class trainer and then a Bard to see your new options.Q: "Where have the crafting guild halls gone?"
A: They're still there, but the doors have moved closer to the crafting areas. In Esteldin, look inside the main crafting hall. In Thorin's Hall, look near the forges.Q: "I tried to enter the Bree-land Homestead Provisions building and ended up in the starter area! What happened?"
A: That door is broken and leads to nowhere. The game has returned you to a safe location as a precaution. This is a known issue.*UPDATED* Q: "I purchased the Legendary Edition. Why can't I do the 'Exclusive Rohan Content'?"
A: As of patch 8.0.1 on Wednesday, you should be able to do horse session play again for Discovering the Descendant.Q: "I think I found a bug. What should I do?"
A: First, read the release notes and known issues for any last-minute news from Turbine. You may also want to try asking for help in the /advice channel. If you believe you've found a bug, type /bug and fill out the form with as much detail as you can. The QA team can't respond to every bug report, but your reports help them make a better game!Q: "The game crashes when I try to enter a session play. What should I do?"
A: If you're using the Lua plugin AltInventory, make sure it is disabled using the Plugin Manger on the character select screen.Q: "Where's the loot? Nothing is sparkling."
A: Enemies in Rohan all have Remote Looting. If you have the UI option "Always loot all" enabled, it will automatically go into your bags. Otherwise, you can find all your loot in the Pending Loot panel. You can access it through its notification icon.Q: "What is this big blue Quest Action Available button?"
A: Some quests in Rohan are bestowed and turned in remotely. A quest might be bestowed by killing an opponent (identified with a quest ring), just getting near a warband, using an item on the landscape, or entering a specific area.Q: "I ran out of quests in Langhold. What did I miss?"
A: You probably missed one of the remotely bestowed quests at the Brigand Camp. Go back there and make sure you accept it and complete it.Q: "Someone stole my kill! How can I get them to stop?"
A: No one stole your kill. All opponents in Rohan have Open Tapping. Anyone who damages an enemy (or heals someone who damages an enemy) gets quest credit, XP, and loot from that enemy, regardless of if you're grouped.Q: "My freep characters can't get to the Ettenmoors! Why not?"
A: The Free Peoples must now be level 80 to travel to the Ettenmoors.Q: "How do I get back to the East Wall?"
A: If you start your adventures in Rohan with the Epic Quests, you may have to ride back through the Wold to return after leaving. Consider setting your milestone in the East Wall if you start out there.Q: "Is there a Forge-master somewhere?"
A: There are Legendary Item NPCs in every major settlement in Rohan, except in the East Wall.Q: "Are there class trainers in Rohan?"
A: Yes. You can find class trainers in Harwick and Snowbourn. You should visit them at level 75 to train your first mounted class skills.Q: "Where do I get my war-steed?"
A: Finishing the entire quest line in Langhold in the northern Wold will lead you to your war-steed. It takes about an hour or two.Q: "How do I get my mounted skills?"
A: All class mounted skills are available at character level 75. All steed mounted skills are available at steed level 2. Visit your class trainer to train these new skills.Q: "Why do my toggle skills and stances keep turning off and on?"
A: While you're mounted on any kind of steed, any active toggle skills or stances are temporarily suppressed. When you dismount, their effects will be restored.Q: "What happened to all my quickslots?"
A: When you're mounted on a war-steed, you'll see an entirely separate set of quickslots for mounted skills.Q: "Why won't any of my mounted combat skills work?"
A: Mounted combat skills are disabled in most towns, some enemy camps, and in all areas outside of Rohan.Q: "How do I see my war-steed's stats?"
A: Press Shift + M.Q: "I only see one war-steed mount summoning skill. How do I switch to a different type of war-steed?"
A: You can choose a different type of war-steed by changing to a different mounted trait spec, or by refunding the trait points in your current spec.Q: What is the maximum level for war-steeds?
A: Level 50. Your war-steed will have 77 trait points at that level.Q: "Can I use a Light Bridle with my medium or heavy war-steed?"
A: Yes, although any legacies marked "Light Steed" will not be active if you're on a different type of war-steed.Q: "How do Tasks work in Rohan?"
A: Every Tasks Bulletin Board in Rohan has the same set of Task quests, all available from level 75-85. Each quest requires 10 task items, and rewards XP, Legendary Item XP, and Steed XP. Tasks do not reward any reputation in Rohan.Q: "Is there a vault in Rohan?"
A: There are vault keepers and other town services in Harwick and Snowbourn.Q: "Are there crafting guild representatives in Rohan?"
A: Yes, you can find guild representatives at the crafting hall in Snowbourn.Q: "Where are the warbands?"
A: Right click on your radar map and ensure warband icons are enabled. You may need to do the same for your world map.Q: "Why isn't a quest popping up for this warband?"
A: Each warband quest can only be done once a day, although you can do all 17 warband quests every day.Q: "Why did I just get teleported out of Harwick?"
A: Until you finish the quest "On Notice!" the guards in Harwick may be suspicious of you.Q: "How do I do Five Against the Wold?"
A: This is your first mounted instance quest. Follow the lead of the Four Riders. If you run into a red wall, turn around.Q: "I ran out of quests in Snowbourn. What did I miss?"
A: You may want to look for suspicious objects near the oven at the outdoor crafting area.Q: "What do I do with [Silver Tokens of the Riddermark]?"
A: You can barter for armour, jewelry, and shields at levels 76, 78, 80, and 82 along with recipes at Eastemnet Quartermasters in Harwick (west of the milestone) and Snowbourn (outside the Mead Hall).Q: "Where do I get a [Battered Ring of Rohan]?"
A: These can randomly be found in boxes of warband spoils. You can upgrade them at Eastemnet Quartermasters.Q: "How do I unlock Hytbold?"Q: "Where do I go next?"
A: In general, the progression through Eastern Rohan goes:
- Level 75-76: The Wold (start at Langhold) and/or The East Wall (start virtually anywhere)
- Level 77-78: Norcrofts (start at Elthengels)
- Level 79-80: Entwash Vale (start at Eaworth)
- Level 81-82: Eaves of Fangorn (start at the fishing camp outside the entrance)
- Level 83-85: Sutcrofts (start at Garsfeld)
- Level 84-85: Hytbold

Parth Celebrant is the quickest stable to Rohan, no?
Btw--you may want a *slight spoilers* warning with the On Notice info.
Great post!

I want to start with the Epic story continuation first. I can wait for my war horse.
Will that work out ok, or should I just do the mount quests first?

So the level, gear, trait, skirm soldier and LI grinds weren't enough, eh? Turbine managed to slide in another hamster wheel disguised as a "feature"? lol, if I wasn't sure I'm done with freepside for the foreseeable future to just pvp on creep, I'm sure now. Can't wait to see what store goodies will be available to augment mounted combat.

As someone who leveled to 85 eight times during beta testing, let me reassure you that war-steed leveling is not a grind. It happens naturally while you're leveling up, and continues while you do daily quests and tasks later.
It also only happens one time. You technically only have a single war-steed, although you can change its trait specs on the fly. Once your war-steed is level 50, "all" your war-steeds are level 50.
For those who are impatient, a LOTRO Store buff is available that increases steed XP from creature kills by 25%, and I believe another buff increases player XP, steed XP, and LI XP from quests by 100%.Founder of the Better Biscuit Bureau, 4 Brookbank Street, Bannockbury, Brandywine.

There's a camp site fire and a mustering horn at Idmar's Camp even closer to Rohan than the Parth Celebrant stable.
Someone could make some dough summoning people tomorrow ..A spaceship from another star / They ask me where all the people are
I tell them I'm the only one / There was a war, but I must have won

Another common question that came up early in beta: Why does lore master not have sword equipped anymore? Because the skill to use the sword is now a passive skill, it must be trained at the class trainer. The legendary trait now just adds more morale, melee damage, parry/evade. That means that instance oriented lore master who don't melee much can use the legendary trait for something else.

Some areas of Rohan are mounted combat "only". Do I have ANY chance of doing them on foot? I absolutely hate the idea of mounted combat and don't intend to even get remotely close to it, but I do want to explore and do quests.
Many philosophical problems are caused by such things as the simple inability to shut up.

Where's the cheese? I, for one, am glad for new content to "grind" on. The leveling for the mounts is natural and comfortable. You receive XP for your mount as you level on quests. I found the points to come reasonably quickly. As the combat mounts are faster than standard mounts, I think to say that one won't use them at all is a bit premature. I do believe that at any point one chooses to fight on foot, there is nothing preventing that.
Fredelas, thank you for your post. Great consolidated initial information."His house was perfect, whether you liked food, or sleep, or work, or story-telling, or singing, or just sitting and thinking, best, or a pleasant mixture of them all."

I made that thread, and the lost of beta forums came as completely surprise to me, as I didn't thought about that happening at all. I basically wrote that info on-the-fly, so I have only partial info elsewhere, but not full backup of my post.
That'll teach me to take backups of EVERY important posts because you never know when your posts or whole forum categories are made inaccessible. Granted, they were beta forums so I should have thought about it because beta was ending. Still, in my opinion beta forums should be accessible at least one week after Rohan goes live.
EDIT: I know Lunasa had also all legacies sorted out and I couldn't have compiled all the info without her help. So maybe she has that info saved...Last edited by Gilean-EU; Oct 15 2012 at 03:49 AM.

You don't have to do mounted combat if you don't want to. Unless I forgot some quests, basically EVERY quests in Rohan is possible to do on foot, if that is what you want. Mounted combat quests (especially those where you need to kill mounted enemies) can be more difficult if you are not mounted, because mounted enemies move around quite fast and they can be out of range for your skills often, especially if you are melee character.
Also "horse race" quests can be a bit difficult to do with 162-168% speed normal horses, but I *think* they are still doable as well.

Nice! Thanks for putting the effort in.
Slight quibble, release notes and this faq differ on the number of tasks required at task boards, unless I'm reading one wrong (quite possible)

Oct 15 2012 12:25 PM #38If you're not sure how something is supposed to work, try asking in the /advice channel. If after this you're convinced you've found a bug, type /bug and fill out the form.
The only ones that are going to know for certain if something is a bug is the developers. While you may get some very knowledgeable players in the advice channel, no one can ever know for a certainty if every mechanic in the game is behaving correctly.
So please, err on the side of caution and file a bug if you are able. Let us decide. I have said it before and I will say it again: we would much, much rather have several reports of a non-issue than risk the potential of missing a legitimate bug.Senior Quality Assurance Analyst
