I have seen something similar in LotrO (back in the EU/Codemasters era), when one of the most respected PvMP players died unexpectedly.
Both these events show the deep grade of empathy gamers have within their communities. An ability to overcome all differences in the face of real tradgedy.
/me still has tears in the eyes from that Goonswarm video...
in my thoughts and in my dreams they´re always in my mind
these songs of hobbits, dwarves and men and elves
come close your eyes
you can see them, too
Friend of mine is an IT guy for CCP who makes EVE. He was a bit quiet on TS tonight. That community lost a major personality in a public and very ugly way. Yet the community came together in that unique way that only gamers can. We are a kind of self selected family, and sometimes are closer than real family.
I saw it on Vilya when Rekka passed. Hundreds of folks showed up to pay tribute to him. So did I even though I never met him.
We are gamers.

It's being reported today that Sean Smith, one of the American diplomats murdered in Libya, was active in the EVE Online community. My condolences go out to his family and friends the world over for their loss.
We all know many members of the armed services play Lotro and my thanks go out to them; service to our country takes many forms and thanks go out to them also. May you all safely return home.

You're welcome.
IMHO (some say I'm not right either) the killing of the diplomat was a terrorist hit. Ive had the misfortune of being in the middle east a time or two and I can tell you with pretty good certainty the majority there dont think killing innocent people is a proper response to a small independent films portrayls of a historic figure. To bad the guy paid with his life and its a shame for the EvE community, but in all candor everyone who is in that "life" is fully educated on the risks.
Never thought i saw the day that EvE gamers, from the SA forum at that, would be more tactful and kind in a public forum than LotRO players. All of you discussing religion, politics and other mindless drivel should just feel ashamed. A person died, and people who knew that person reach out to mourn his passing in public. If you don't have something respectful or kind to say, maybe now would be the time and place to not say anything at all.
I've cleaned up and merged the threads regarding the subject of Vile Rat and his passing. Guys, let's keep this focused on the fact that an influential member of a gaming community passed away. Stay away from the politics and stuff.
With that said, my deepest condolences to both Sean's family, and some of the other passings that I have heard of recently from our very own community. My deepest sympathies go out to all of those who have had someone pass recently.
May the road go ever onwards.
