I'm a returning player, drawn back for the call of Rohan, and am beginning to think this is a good chance for a fresh start at things. I'm a longtime RPer (been on Landroval for my entire LotRO times), and have been seeing a lot of great stuff here on the 'official' server too.
One bugbear, though, this being the EN server it seems the majority of people are EU players (no real shock there, of course). Is there a sizable enough population of assorted timezones that an NA player will have plenty of chances for fun, or if I came over would I need to adapt to a more EU timeframe?
Sorry if it's a rather dumb question, I see plenty of activity here and on the RP hub, it's just hard to tell how much is on an EU or NA time table.
Although one can say the majority of us reside in the EU, we have a growing NA community which you can see at all times of the day.
A Kin to look at is The Iron Axes. There a NA based kin-ship, that is very active at all times during the clock, Heck I've even seen them at the Green Dragon on Fridays!
I think you'll find players are active on Laurelin all the time.
Speaking as a former player on Landy I can tell you that I created my first character on Laurelin within days of Turbine opening the server to NA players. At the time, I had no plans to switch servers, I really just wanted to see what the differences were (if any) between an "unofficial" RP server and an official one.
It took maybe two weeks before I was logging onto Laurelin daily, and Landy less and less.
At first, I saw few RP opportunities...the server was pretty quiet in my usual playtimes. (But the RP I *DID* find was fantastic!) But as the weeks became months, the number of active RPers in what would be considered North American Primetime grew steadily.
At this point, I find no difficulty at all finding both RP and instance groups at almost any hour of the day. Yes, most of the long running events are held at a more Eurocentric time...but there is plenty of RP to be had outside of events. And from the conversations I've had with others (both Euro night owls, and new(er) NA players) we have reached the "critical mass" needed to start having some events that cater to NA hours.
All we need now is a few dedicated folks to step up and organize them.

I have a char on Laurelin that roams around at NA times, being that I am on the east coast. Yes its slower, ive gone nights and not seen another toon. However there are always people on, but if your looking for hustle and bustle and high activity you'll want to coordinate your play with the euro time zones.
Either way you wont regret playing on this server, its excellent.
Being a NA player and a new member of The Iron Axes, I can tell you, that they are a great group of people. You will find people on most hours and there is a set of us NA folk that play in the evening NA hours. (I myself am PST) I am going to throw a link up to the recruitment thread, you can find a link there for the website and contact information for the officers. If you decided to join Laurelin, you will not regret it, I look forward to seeing you in-game.
Aye, the Axes are always looking for good folk! If you are indeed interested, follow Hildofr's link above. Also, the kin's webpage can be found in my signature.
If we seem like a group you'd like to try out, drop us a line. If not, no worries - feel free to look us at any time if your in a bind gamewise (i.e., need folk for instances/group play) or looking for a spot of RP. We're always down for something fun.
Welcome back to Middle-earth and welcome to Laurelin!
The server certainly has a lot of great RP Events/kins and people. The fact, that it is supported by the RP rules and policy (Read this thread, for full details) makes for a more immersive experience as it has separate naming and chat rules to preserve the atmosphere of the Lord of the Rings.
About the N/A population, since Turbine took over, (last year i think) the RP community here, has been increasing ever since, at all times.
There is a descent RP crowd, during N/A times, but from what i understand and see, its spread all over, so that might explain why people sometimes think its quite, but it really isnt as there is more going on than what a new folk here will see, in the start when he/she doesnt know where to look and go
And Laurelin will only get, more and more busy (at all times) because its actually the only Official (English) RP Server of LotRO and most, if not all new folks interested for RP and a more immersive world, will simply choose this server, since it has the RP tag next to it.
It will be interesting to see all the new rpers that will come when Rohan is available and not to mention later with the Hobbit movie/s
By the way i suggest, to have a look at Laurelin Archives too. (and why not create your char, a profile if you like, its easy, fun and simple)
Feel free to drop me a tell, (or post your char's name here) if you want to talk with many more people/rpers during your playtimes
