I recently started a LM after discovering Forochel (You'll see why in the next paragraph ) and loved it so much I decided to splash as much cash on it as I did my Guardian (Who I've had for years and practically bought everything with convenience written all over it)
I've decided to make my LM my 'main' as such, even got my kin to promote my LM to Officer and demote my Guardian from this status and have a great roleplay idea set up with the Northern Lights book. - For those of you who haven't read the books, there is a character called Lyra Belacqua in it and every human has a daemon, animal companions that are physically bound to their human.. her daemon takes the form of a wildcat often, and of course, LM's get a Lynx at Lvl 30.. they go to the North and the storyline is based around the 'Aurora' or Northern Lights as the title states. Forochel reminded me of what the 'north' might look like in the story so I tend to imagine I'm making the long journey there with my wildcat daemon :P
So basically, I've gone and spent double what I would have if I'd started with my LM in the first place!
In terms of TP and/or real money - 9.99 + perks per month covers all my characters (I rarely use the store for anything more than crafting accs or deeding accs)
In terms of in-game gold (Trades/AH) - 100 millions more than I can count
At one point I was paying a monthly sub, so I didn't spend anymore cash for TP - just spent monthly earned TP on basic things like deed scrolls. I think I bought 1 horse from the store with that TP cause I thought it looked pretty.
Now I have dropped down to Prem and just grind the heck out of the TP. Only thing I see myself spending cash on again is RoR.
When F2P started, I used most of my "fidelity TP" on stat tomes for my main. Now I never buy one-time usage perks, and limit my purchases to account wide improvements.
I am premium so I don't pay monthly (sorry for not being VIP... I'm married and my smokin' hot wife wins out over the monthly fee haha). I have spent about $100 on things for the game though, from points to the Mithril Edition. I started as a mini and have taken him the highest. The only thing I have spent TP on for one toon is an extra milestone. I do get every trait slot when they come available too I guess, oh, and the riding skill... yikes, this stuff is really starting to add up. Other than that, I go for account wide stuff like quest packs, inventory bags, and AH slots. So, that's that.
I refuse to spend more on an online game then I would a boxed PS3 game. Figure $40-60, and I have already spent $40, so guess what?
Pretty good rule of thumb. Of course you would have to figure how long you play a boxed game for. It varies from around 2 days to years later as some have more longevity than others. For me boxed games usually last a couple months of casual play, so my $10/mo sub in lotro has above average longevity.
To the op's question, I can't recall ever buying any extra TP's than what I get with my sub. I mostly buy (some)virtues so I don't have to grind them, the odd relic removal scroll and accelerators. That's about it. Oh and I did buy the Inn League beer keg backpack, because it looks hilarious.
Curiously, the evolution of the internet seems inversely proportional to the evolution of man.
Not too long ago I asked the same thing and got quite a few answers. Some said nothing but those that actually came out with the numbers indicated that $200 USD per Toon was an average expenditure.
Up to that time I had not really spent time thinking about what I was buying. I "thought" I didn't buy much but actually I was buying a lot. Even as VIP with stipend I was buying things. From the time the store opened I have kept track of every item I bought and how much TP I spent. $200 per toon is about right.
Once I had realized what I actually was spending I gave a good think about what I was getting and am trying to use my "entertaiment budget" with better insight.
F2Ps actually spend a lot more on the game than VIPs. Many F2Ps think they get something for free or no cost but if you really think about it, the reason the game is F2P is because F2P makes MORE money than a Sub game. So someone is shoveling a lot more money in than before. My un-scientific personal calc was that F2Ps pay about 5 times what a VIP pays to play. ymmv.
I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here! <Your winnings, sir.>
[sotto voce] Oh, thank you very much.
In terms of real world money, I spend the $10/ month subscription + plus cost of purchasing expansions, which for RoR was the $40 version. This amount applies to all my characters, and anything else is gained by earning TP in game.
In terms of in game gold/silver, I lost count of that a long time ago.
lifetime minus the 5 year savings of a monthly fee*scribbles on scratch paper*.subtract the costs of expansions.*sound of abacus clicking away*factor in the 500 free tp each month*sound of adding machine buttons being pressed and tape printing out*....what was the question again?

The 500 isn't "free". You paid for it, even if it was 5 years ago. Same with people paying monthly now. The 500 should never be considered as "free". It's purchased monthly/quarterly/yearly.. and for lifetime a one time huge purchase.
It's not given free, its a paid service.

Well, mine's free. My lifetime subs paid for themselves years ago. I've been playing this game for "Free" for a very long time.

If you can't grasp that... sorry.
You paid for lifetime 5 years ago. Thus its a paid service, no matter how many years you get out of it Doesn't matter if you think it paid off years ago or not, that isn't the point. The point is, you paid for it to never expire. ;P

He keeps my comp upgraded and I don't laugh when he has to buy a bigger/better keyboard/mouse lol

I pay sub, xpacs and of course original game. I don't buy additional TP. If I can't earn it ingame, via the ordinary TP accrued as part of playing, or win it in a lottery or via luck in a festival - it don't get bought. Too damn scottish to pay for extras! Just paying for MMOs makes me twitch at times (Til I remember I'd be buying a game or two every couple months anyway....)
As for IG stuff - bah they all make their own way :P Which is kinda funny because some of my wee toons have more money than my "big" toons on account I tend to collect and sell resources on the wee ones lol

60 months @ $300 lifetime sub is around $5/month so far. Of course it gets cheaper and cheaper with every month that passes by, but it will never be completely free, just better value than it would have been if they had gone with a regular recurring subscription.
As for the "free" TP every month? It is kind of free for lifers because the TP's were not a part of the original equation from 5 years ago.
A good question would be, if they were to take away the free TP's from lifers would that be considered stealing, if most lifers consider them to be "free"? My guess is most would consider it stealing, and if that is the case most people do consider lifers as paying for their "free" TP's even if it was 5 years ago. (I realize this contradicts my second paragraph, I am just thinking out loud now.)
edit: I guess what it comes down to is a lifetime subscription is still a subscription, just paid for in a different way.

Curiously, the evolution of the internet seems inversely proportional to the evolution of man.
I'm lifetime and bought Moria expansion. Other than that I simply free-loaded. I didn't buy Mirkwood or RoI with real money -- just accumulated TPs through lifetime VIP and deeds. I plan on doing the same with RoR. If character-only items in the store weren't so ungodly expensive I'd actually spend the 500 monthly TPs on various things. Instead turbine practically forces me to save them for the next expansion cuz there is nothing else worth spending them on.
Only things worth getting over time are account wide things or stat tomes for main characters (because they're permanent). And I only bother with those when they're on sale and keep enough TPs saved up so I'm on track to free-load through the next expansion.
I used to buy TPs via Mobile every now and then... In fact, I used to buy them alot in small amounts, maybe catching up with subscription costs. But now I don't buy anything at all... Untill the previous offers for Mobile are restored, at least.
im a true f2p, im the type of player lotro doesnt like, i grind fer any and all my tp...im broke dont have a gaming budget. most of the time i have no budget period. heck this aint even my puter, so i spend not 1 dollar on lotro, and i like it that way. if my cash flow prob changes l8r on then maybe id spend but fer now free sounds good to me....
In terms of my toons don't know, however I know that purchasing expansions for myself, friends, my wife, turbine points for my friends, myself my wife, I have spent well over 1000 in the last two years. F2P = Pay more to play :P
I've bought small amounts of TP a couple of times, to cover some "splurge" items that even VIPs don't get (I think the most I've spent on one item was on shared storage), but nowadays I just deed-grind to get what I want. Better for my toons in the long run anyway
I went VIP right from the start because I knew I would want full access to all of the zones, plus I didn't want to deal with the restrictions on gold, traits, swift travel, etc. I guess the most I've spent on this game was when I got the Mithril Edition.
Theres a good insight here.. I must go way overboard.. it's addictive :P I've spent on all milestone skills for two characters, stat tomes (Most important only) for both aswell, trait slots, currency cap and riding skill (obvious ones) and all quest packs.. I still need to buy the expansions which i'm pretty sure i'll be doing using rl money too.. I've recently bought cosmetics and I bought the extra bags. Oh AND I've bought the steed of the hunter for my hunter and two algraig steeds for my two mains!
I haven't spent anything on any of them yet, and now with the 1/2 off quest pack sale (which I took liberal advantage of) I can goa ll the way to 75 if I want.
I have no problem grinding TP, I love grinding, and I only buy things that work for my entire account.
So, I had to ask myself, if I DID spend money on the game, what would I buy? Answer: I'd do the $15 one month VIP thing, then maybe after that I'd spend on cosmetics, cosmetic space, etc.
I really don't know what to do with the game yet as there are so many ways to play, so I'm holding out spending money on it until i get a better feel for the direction i want to go.
i played one char for 2 years... so every purchase ws for "him."
lifetime account, xpacs, and a few bucks on points...
$400-$500
you could say thats what i spent for the entire game, but again, i did not even roll a second char for 20+ months.
