I couldn't figure out the answer or where to post, so here's a newb question.
I'm a RL dad of 3 under 10... and sometimes I'm called to drop everything in order to deal with something immediately. So what happens when I'm in the middle of an area that's full of hostile mobs and I log out or exit? Is my toon just standing with a big "kill me" sign on him? Or do I "vanish" from sight after a while?

You vanish after 25 seconds. If the place you are is safe for the first 25 seconds you won't die so try not to log out if you are in the path of mobs. I usually prefer to find a corner or go behind some nearby structure, this limits the lines of sight on you and limits the mobs that could jump you. If all the mobs in your area are stationary just stand somewhere they don't attack you and you will be safe.
For a while you just stand there and are able to be attacked then you just vanish but when you log in you will be in the same dangerous place.
One thing I do sometimes when I don't want to die is to quickly enter a solo skirmish (and stay logged in), then go do what I need to do, come back and exit the skirmish and continue slaughtering evil things.
Logging back in is a problem though, because you run the risk of getting killed before you exit the loading screen, and since you can't attack while you're not in control of your character, your more likely to die, unless you're in an extremely ubnderleveled area.
I normally opt for the furthest corner or the middle of a lake, because enemies don't normally venture out into the water too far. If you have some Free Peoples in the area, definitely get near them.
Your character does disappear, but it takes a little while, and mobs can regen and aggro near you both on log out and on log in. I only remember getting in trouble this way once, but I try to log out in safe places. It you can use a travel skill port to safety, then log out, great. It you don't have the time to do that, then it really doesn't matter, as real life trumps a game anytime.
if you logout in the world in the middle of a group of mobs, even if you kill the lot then logout your main problem will be when you log back in later, your toon will enter the game world long before your game has actually loaded which is when youll most likely die.
if you have time move to a safer area clear of mobs, if you dont have time dont worry about dieing, the only penalty wears off in about 10 minutes or can be removed by a minstrel if your impatient.. well youll have a repair bill but you can live with that for a while

Meh, that is not a big danger as long as your connection is pretty fast so you don't get stuck on loadscreen for years. Most non-squishies can survive long enough with passive damage prevention such as evade and parry to gain control. If you play a caster, all bets are off.

My connection speed doesn't always seem to have a direct correlation with how long it takes to log in.
I'd err on the side of caution when possible. Of course, with three kids under age 10, having your character defeated when a crisis takes you from the computer would likely be the least of your concerns at that moment.

yeah id second that.. 4-5 years ago i changed from 1mb to a 5mb line.. the max my line will run at and tbh theres no real difference between 1mb and 5mb, even if you have a 24mb line well imho it wont make a blind bit of difference. the biggest difference was the change when the EU servers were moved to the US ie higher laitency, an even bigger difference was switching to SSD ie way way waahey faster load times
@OP RL problems take precidence, at least IMHO, if something comes up worry about what happens to your toon later, if your in a fellowship at least appologise first if you can before leaving

I'm the family "go to" guy so I know what you mean. I just log out the character and select don't wait. It takes you right to the character select screen.

This is true. Even then, though, your character "exists" in the world until the full countdown is complete and you can still be defeated.
If you're soloing, it's not a big deal. Worst case scenario is that when you log back in, you may be at a nearby rez circle and have a bit of a repair bill to deal with. No biggie. Sure, if the real-life situation you need to go handle isn't too urgent, try and get to a relatively safe area before logging out to avoid that, but if you need to leave immediately, don't worry about it.
If you're in a fellowship in the middle of running an instance, it's a bit more of a problem, because you may be leaving the rest of your group in the lurch. Try to find a kinship with other people with families who have similar situations to deal with and who will tend to be more understanding of situations when your real life needs to interrupt their game. LOTRO has a fairly mature audience, so you should be able to find other people who understand having responsibilities.
Depending on how often your parenting responsibilities interrupt your game time, you may simply find that some of the larger, more time-consuming group content just isn't feasible, but most of the game can be done solo, and some of the group content can be done in relatively short segments that minimize the likelihood of being interrupted in the middle of it.
If you're only going to be away from the computer for a short time, starting a solo skirmish puts you in an instant safe place and you can just stand there until your ready to play again, then you just have to end the skirmish (or play it if you want) and you're back to your questing area - no logging in or out.
Of course this won't help for those "Can you take me to ballet class" times but it's great for those "Dad, there's no toilet paper in here" moments. It also works well for those pesky phone calls and unexpected door bells.
Once again proving to me that LOTRO is the best MMO for me to invest my time in. All fantastic answers. I'll have to try the single skrim hide-a-way trick for a quickly resolving issue some time. I once logged back in after a situation only to find myself in a cloud of poison dot's from Tarkrip archers. Being a tough guard with a better stronger armor thing, it was no big deal. It's nice to know there are other options. I just realized I left that guy parked behind a bush on the southern tip of Rantost... hope the tomb raiders didn't patrol that far down. Not my normal habit, it was just to late to try to swim back to whereever (Eeverswim :P) and my travel skills where on cool down.
Knowing the game world was real time and there's no pause bottom has kept me out of this genre... until I just couldn't resist Lotro anymore. Turns out... I've gotten my non-gamer wife involved too. Yay!
If your character is an elf, burglar, or hunter, stealth skills might hide you until you disappear.
That's not true, I don't believe. Once you press Log Out, all active toggle skills will turn off, ie: run buffs, horses, stances, stealth.
OP: I am in the same boat as you. I have two children under the age of 5. Sometimes I can run to a somewhat safe corner, but other times I have to log out during the middle of fighting a troll or something because I hear the "Mooooooooom!!!!" (Luckily, my apartment is small so I can see them at all times right from my computer chair.) If you cant get somewhere safer in a few seconds because of different reasons I wouldn't worry so much about the death, as real life always trumps.
As others have said though, you will be there for the full 25 seconds it takes to log out, then disappear. But you will log in and be visible even before the loading screen is up, and them baddies do think you taste pretty sweet. You could always hope someone is in the area and sees it and decides to help you out. ^.^
