    Community Update: July 9th, 2012 -- Warbands & Summer Fun 2012 - Discussion THREAD

Since it's been more than 30minutes, and there's no official discussion thread I thought I'd start a thread for us!

This video was short on a few of the details we saw in Sapience's video.

Question: #1 When's the Warband video scheduled? Tomorrow?
#2a You say participants in ANY Summer Fun 2012 event have a chance to win Prizes (TP/Perlino), Obviously not all of the events advertise that they've gotten prize support. Assuming you are providing it to ALL Summer Fun 2012 events, How are you providing prize support to events like 'Meta Deed Mondays' (http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.p...ly-%28Vilya%29) ?
#Aside: 2b I've wanted to put together something like a Day of Deeding, but apart from this I fail to see what'd bring players to deed on this opposed to any other occasion where it's usually 'Do I need the deed and have the time?'. I'd be happy to talk with a community team member or some other folks at length about setting up some other kinds of events and what I can do to encourage player participation. I want to spur our Riddermark server onto greater community involvement and pride as our journey to Rohan continues.

Any other feedback for the team with the video?

You'll see warbands around the middle of the week Crell. I guess that mention wasn't in the cut that we put up today. Sorry about that!

Now, as to the Summer Fun events, yes, there were some events that could not be adapted to a prize format. Sometimes the organizers didn't worry about handing out prizes, but if an organizer wants, my suggestion was to do something like a random giveaway during the event, or some sort of raffle. Obviously this would require more work on the event organizer's part, and therefore may not be a perfect solution.

But, really, the Summer Fun event was all about working together with the event organizers to create something fun and that things people wanted to attend. I worked personally with more than a few people in that list to get their event ideas together, and guide them on what works and what doesn't work in large scale events like these. It's a very personal, very customized process.

Erm.... I have to ask: Seraphina is a man? Cos clearly the one we see in the video have the (dunno how is in english, in my language is called Adan´s Nut) in the neck. Besides, theres a photo in the Celestrata perfil on Facebook wich doesnt fit with the person in the video.

    Some kind of joke?

Ahhh... I knew this would inevitably come up. I am a transgendered woman, male-to-female. That is, in fact, 100% me in the video. (And me doing silly things, like awkward pauses and an odd head tilt that I had no clue I was doing. >.>)

To the question of why no official discussion thread, simply put because there isn't anything to discuss. It's a quick video saying, "this week you'll get X". And this week you will. Doesn't really warrant a lot of discussion/questions. Last week's video didn't have a thread either.

This leaves me with the impression that people may have contacted you with ideas and a desire to do...something and wound up doing something else because it had the potential to work better. Did these interactions take place via the general submission process or did anyone pre-emptively get feedback and some event-lead-coaching style advice? If the latter, than to whom should I direct my thoughts? I'd love to have something all organized, prepared and ready to go for the next occasion if not sooner, but I'm also concerned that I'm jumping off the deep-end and that the kinds of things I have in mind aren't even remotely re-workable to support larger community involvement. I don't want to be that guy that runs an event that everyone thinks wasn't worth its mention in print!

I didn't ask that one, though it's kind of hard to guess when I'll see an official thread for any given video. I've started threads for specific videos and then found an official thread started 10-15minutes later on more than one occasion, anything you can suggest to avoid having that occur?

Well, i mean no insult or something, each one chooses freely. Simply , as i said before, i saw the photo in the Facebook perfil and you dont seem the same person, so i was guessing about if it was a deliberated joke.

And by the way, thanks for the correction, Adan´s Apple then, more for my vocabulary. And yes i know we have it men and women, but in the men is clearly more visible than in women

I didn't pay attention to the vid the first time and only saw the end part where Celestrata says "Right there, below me!". I misheard her say the word "below" without "e" and her facial expression suited well for the misheard line. I was "What did she say?"

Anyways, I like these videos so keep them coming. It's almost like you were real people and cared about your player base Now lets watch those PvMP dev vids!

Celestrata posting about Celestrata, celestrata-ception, we must go deeper (and no, I could not resist)

Where now is the lolcat and the derailer? Where is the troll that was trolling?
Where is the URL and the youtube, and the snappy retort flowing?
Where is the hand on the keyboard, and the LCD screen glowing?
    They have passed like rain on the thread, like a wind in the post;

As a general feedback to the recent fad of posting video diaries, would it be too much to ask to provide transcripts for the people with impaired hearing and for the non-native English speakers who cannot grasp the spoken language well enough (especially with a variety of accents, especially American) but are fluent enough to read the written speech?

I hope this helps. It's by no means official - I just typed what I heard (slow day at work).

Hey there everyone. My name is Seraphina Brennan. You might know me better as Celestrata from the LotR:O forums.

This week for LotR:O Updates we're going to be talking about the warband system. Now, warbands are a brand new type of AI that's coming with Riders of Rohan. These types of AI are roving bands of elites that will traverse across the plains of Rohan and cause trouble for you and your group-mates. You might want to learn more about these types of AI, because they feature varied things like 'The Archer', 'Shaman' and 'Jouster' types, and a couple more too.

Or, if that's not your fancy, don't forget about our brand new Summer Fun events that's going to be taking place all the next week. If you visit any player-run event across any of our servers you can win cool things like 500 Turbine Points or a brand new Perlino Steed that works on all of your characters across all servers.

If you want to learn more about this cool event and all its opportunities, make sure to visit the link right here, below me.

Otherwise, I'll see you guys next week and take it easy.
Note: I won't claim this to be a perfect transcript. I got as close as I could. I also tried to edit out the nerves a bit. Again, I hope this helps!

Thanks for the video! I'm super excited about the festivities, and I'm thankful that someone from Imladris volunteered to host the events. Too bad I still can't attend because of the time zone difference. :P

And Celestrata deary, you're very beautiful. Don't mind the drivel from the youtube comments. I do have one question: what is that black kitty-spider cross thingy below your left monitor? It's so cute! I want one! Where'd you get it? :3

Poor horse dev head seems to be being tossed around your desks. The way he's slumped over behind your frames is very undignified. Maybe that's why his eyes are bulging and he's always almost about to scream his head off. XD

Oh, and I still haven't forgiven Sapience for saying that you left a dent on his desk. It's probably from all those cupcakes he's hiding behind the Rohan banner and didn't want to share any. *nodnod

It's insanely difficult to look natural on informative videos like that. I had to do video presentations for my graduate degree all the time and even after a couple years of doing them I still require multiple takes to not look like a spastic idiot.

    I think you did well.

There is actually a technique to find out all the little quirks and tics you have while doing presentations. Video them and then play the video at 4x or 8x speed. They suddenly show, all of them.

That's how I found out I shuffle from left to right and back as if I'm impersonating Mc Hammer while doing presentations. Honestly.. I had no idea

Sooo... on the topic of Warband AI

Care to elaborate more on that, Celestrata? Because you've surely peeked my interest.

Q: Does the warband AI include 'wolfpack' tactics, meaning that mobs in a warband are aware of each others positioning and employ pack strategies, for example hunt and ambush?

Q: What's jousting AI? Do these mobs tend to try to charge at you as fast as they can to cause maximum damage, then make distance and do this again?

There's more details on Warbands here, just released:

Wow, I hate to say it but I'm liking this less and less. From the link provided by Nyrion...

So, I'm going to be ganked by wandering groups of elites*? That sounds a bit too much like PvP to be fun to me.

That sounds like 'group up or die' to me. I don't like being forced/cajoled/persuaded to group. I avoid content that requires grouping. It sounds like I won't have that option in Rohan.

I don't like the sound of this at all. Sanctioned kill-stealing (kill-sharing)? So, I could be killing some mob, almost got it dead, and some other player rides up, plunks an arrow into my target and then rides away and that player will get some portion of my hard-earned experience? That's how you're going to encourage cooperation? By letting other players steal my experience points? I don't like it. No, I don't like it at all. I believe it will encourage more griefing and unethical play than anything else. What's to stop a player from simply riding around and plunking an arrow into every in-combat mob they see - earning essentially free experience points?

The question all this leaves me with is this: If I wait long enough, till the next big thing after Rohan comes along, will I be able to skip Rohan and Mounted Combat like I can (mostly) skip Moria now? Nothing I've heard about Rohan so far makes it sound like a place I would enjoy adventuring. At this point I don't think I even want to visit!

*Celestrata described them as "roving bands of Elites" in the video.

What I imagine it meant from your first snip was that sticking around in their path is probably not the best idea if you're alone. Assuming the aggro radius is unchanged avoiding them shouldn't be too challenging.

As for the open tapping thing, I figured the complete opposite actually. The idea would be that you wouldn't lose xp if another player tags your mob, even if you aren't grouped together.

Perfectly understandable not to be happy with it of course, but at this point making a decision either way is a little hasty. Perhaps if we're getting a video this week too it might allay some of your concerns.

I didn't mean to say it would be forced, per se. I think it will be more of a "sure, you can go it alone - but you're gonna die pretty quickly" kind of thing.

I hope you're right, but that's not the way it sounds to me. It's also not how it works right now. If you hit a mob I've tapped I get less credit for the kill but you get none. I'm thinking the only difference will be that you'll get credit now - for any contribution. I agree we need more information though. (I'm using the general "you" here)

You're probably right. But the decision is already made - I've already pre-purchased for two accounts. I just hope I don't come to regret that pre-purchase. I think in future I'll wait till we have all the details before spending any money.

Oh yeah, the Warbands at least might be like that. This specific thing is majorly dependent I think on how common these Warbands are in the landscape. If they're just like Rare mobs in old regions, then skirting around them should be easy enough. Otherwise... yeah, I see your point there.

We're definitely going to need dev clarification on this point at least. To be honest I don't rightly know what the best way to handle this is. Pretty much all of them have avenues for abuse.

Ah, then in terms of choices you're pretty borked. Could always try for a refund of course, if you're that concerned, I believe some people managed to get them for RoI last time around.

Yup. Until then, best we can do is speculate like only people over the internet can.

Thanks for the link. Warband AI is a lot clearer to me now.

Oh dear! And we bought the full 70 buck preorder for all three in our family too.

This is disturbing. I realized that we would need to be doing mounted combat, but these types of elite uber groups dashing around the landscape killing off all the solo players?

And I am praying that everyone gets the same amount of XP whether they kill a mob there solo or if a "helpful" player comes by and pings one arrow into it. Also, will this be happening everywhere else with the release of Rohan, or just IN Rohan?

Im hopeful that with the lowered agro radius we got a while back that they can be avoided and that the warsteeds we get will give anyone trying to run away a better chance to get away.

It seems to me that warsteeds wont be as easy to be dismounted as our current horseys otherwise they wouldnt be much good in mounted combat so hoping that translates into allowing us to run if we agro elite warbands that would be suicide to stand and fight alone.

    Heres hoping anyway.
