LIs really seem to be a fun-drainer for this game (they certainly are for me). Building up a new LI every few levels, just to replace it for a 2nd ager, then a 1st ager, then to start over again with each expansion... very un-legendary. Grinding is one thing. If you can play the game and get your grinding done with a little extra attention and focus, great! Having your grinding reset to zero again and again is just... not fun.
Now Turbine says we'll get to grow our horses for mounted combat... Are we going to get the same treatement for the horses as we did for our weapons and class item LIs?
I've looked around, but haven't seen much on this topic. Personally, I don't think I could stomach a second, re-labled LI system.
We have absolutely no idea at the moment, though that is probably more worriesome in itself with the release being like 3 months away with open beta that should start in a month or so.
In any case, from what little has been released so far, I think WarSteeds would be more like the Skirmish Soldiers than the mess that is the LI system. At least we won't be changing horses every couple of levels or so.

Actually, it's in two months and I wouldn't be surprised if Beta hadn't started already seeing as beta starting was classified as incredisoon a couple of weeks ago. On a sidenote, beta is invite only
Well, no one (except Turbine) knows, but if I were to guess, I'd say that the warmounts will be more like Skirmish soldiers, then LI's, but not exactly like them
Perhaps a combination of the two, since Skirmish buddues don't exactly 'Level Up' like LI's do, but the Warmounts are suppose to.

Sapience indcated in another thread that they would let everyone know when the beta has started, and the players that are invited to the beta would get an email. I'm kninda hoping it will start this week.

There is no guarantee there will be an open beta. We will have an open beta if Turbine decides that a open beta makes good business sense. Open betas are generally more a ad campaign and hype generator than a serious attempt to find and fix defects.
Turbine ran a open beta for free to play partially to get folks with no knowledge of Turbine practices, products or Lotro itself. Turbine wanted to know what problems a new arrival was going to run into. Long term players like me would not even notice these issues.
I think it is pretty clear that a closed beta is under way at this moment because the Bullroarer forums require a special account token to access. There is huge game update available for the Bullroarer client.
Unless stated otherwise, all content in this post is My Personal Opinion.

It's going to be heartbreaking to take ol' Silver to the glue factory every five levels.

Sapience has stated they will announce the launch of the beta. This is likely an even more limited access program at the moment than a normal beta would imply, or they have changed their mind and aren't announcing the start of the beta. Given that I have not seen any slips as to indicate users who are involved in testing and that on average users are as likely to follow directions as in other betas, I must assume something else is taking place.
At what point they will open it up to more people, no clue. Hopefully they'll open it up for a wider-test sooner than later, (the better to provide feedback and find and squash bugs).
If I had to guess, I'd bet that war-steeds will be like a combination of skirmish soliders (for managing appearances and traits) and LIs (for improving stats and skills).
I wouldn't be surprised if this resulted in a third new type of equippable LI for level 75+ players.
Another LI slot? REALLY?
Unless RoR comes with a significant streamlining of the LI system, I predict a metric shipload of hate mail over increasing the LI grind by 50%
Don't see what all the fuss is about. It's easy enough to get a perfect or near perfect second age LI and then you're basically set till the next expansion. Unlike jewelry/armor which you have to continually replace as you find better drops.
I could see your complaint being valid 3 years ago when Moria was new and 95% of all LI's were garbage only you didn't know that till you spent 2-3 weeks leveling it. That was a hassle. LI's today are easier then the rest of our gear to get to an acceptable quality.

because it's another 20'ish empowerent scrolls times the number of items (including age upgrades) times the number of alts.
Huge mark grind they just increased by 50% or so.
