I learned something today, with coffee, tea and mini edjumication

    Morning Landrovalrim,

Today is a good day, because I learned something. I am watching a program about Lincoln and the Gettysburg address, and an incident after the battle was mentioned of which I knew nothing about. There was an African-American free woman by the name of Lydia Smith that lived in the Gettysburg area. After the battle, she was so taken with the suffering of the wounded and dying that she hired a wagon and went all around the area seeking donations of food, water, and clothing. She took these to the hospitals that were attempting to deal with the wounded. (according to the program, there were about 35 qualified surgeons after the armies moved out to deal with 21,000 wounded from both sides.) After the donations ran out, she took her entire life savings and purchased food and drink. She dispensed these supplies not only to the men who wore blue, but to those who wore gray too.
What an amazing woman! Well, after seeing this, I wanted to learn more, so I looked her up. She was a divorced mother of two who worked as a housekeeper for a prominant white gettysburg attorney named thaddeus Stevens. Well, Mr Stevens was a dedicated abolitionist who practiced what he preached. When he passed away, he left instructions he was to be buried in an African American cemetary, to illustrate that he meant what he believed in, namely that we all are equal.
And what of Mrs. Smith???? Well, I just knew things were going to turn bad for her since she spent all her savings, but boy was I wrong!!! Mr Stevens had died childless, and he left her a bequest of 5000 dollars in his will, as well as his home and law offices. She opened up a boarding house in Washington DC right across from the famous Willard Hotel (that was the Hilton of its time!) and by all accounts was a prosperous successful businesswoman. So you see, even though we should do things because they are the right thing to do and not for hope of gain, life can have a way of working things out for you just when all seems lost. This story made me feel a whole lot better, and I hope it did you all too.

Thank you for that Doc. I'm going to save it with other information I collect on strong women in history. I've never done much with it but I've always had an interest. I think it's because the times in which I grew up. The late 60's and early 70's.

Anyway, I'm feeling better. I don't know if it's because I am better or if I'm just getting used to it. I'll take either one as it's so nice to have a clear head.

I'm not going to post a spoiler but I will say that the part of the book quest I did last night brought tears to my eyes. I'm such a dork...and proud of it.

In case you haven't noticed, I'm also, finally, getting back into things. Faythe is 72 and may actually get caught up before the expansion. I'm still poking around in other games but I am not as emotionally vested in them as I am in this one. Faythe will go home and help defend her homeland. I think that's rather neat.

Well, still behind at work so off I go to try to catch up and keep up.

That there's a good read, Mr. Doc.

I'm glad you're feeling better, Ms. Faythe. =)

Congrats on 4,000 posts Mr. Welby.

I don't have anything as relevant as any of those to post I suppose but I'm still running amok from one thing to another these days. I should be heading out to the local carving supply store today. They don't have anything online beyond an address on google maps so I'm hoping that they at least carry as much as the Woodcrafters down south. We were going to go see Spidey today but Alditha got a work shift which is just as well. More monies and I get to catch up on some crafting and errands.

The sad news is that it doesn't look like there's any way I'll be able to make it to PAX after all. There was a possibility at one point but the long and short is that the hitchery wouldn't happen in time so that whole notion falls apart. Alditha's still going though and I guess someone else is free to claim my pass. They'd probably have to meet her at Will Call to pick it up, but I'd rather it might go to a coffee crewer than a random type person.

No multi-quotes, folks, I'm too incredibly worn out. I have been lurking, though!

Faythe, I'm glad you are feeling better. Doc, I enjoyed the mini-edjumicaiton as well. Val, I was sorry to read about your aunt, and hope you will accept my belated condolences. I hope your uncle understood; you certainly needed to take care of your husband, and yourself for that matter. Welby, I assume the pockets in the shorts are for the shuriken?

/waves to Rhyssa, Alditha, Garaf, Slammy, and everyone else whose name her tired brain is not recalling at the moment.

The container is packed. Things haven't gone as smoothly as I wished, but I kept pushing and will leave Saturday. It looks like I will need/want to return in a few weeks for some house-related issues and to tie up some loose ends, but that's okay. It would have been nice to simply have been able to walk away, so to speak, but I do want my house well-cared for even if I don't live in it. And for what I have tried to accomplish, I think I've managed fairly well overall, if not perfectly.

And since this turned into more than a quick hello post somehow and I seem to be politely venting, the simple truth is that with the combination of "normal" moving stress and confronting all the family issues tied up with cleaning out a *lot* of old stored stuff as well as leaving the family home, I simply need to get out of here, let my mind clear, and relax. My family has been in this town since 1946. I grew up with not only my immediate family, but grandparents, an aunt, an uncle, and a cousin here. I'm the only one left now. Time to go...

Anyway, sorry about the rambling. I'll blame it on the fact that I am just so tired, mentally and physically.

    Take care, folks!

I'll try this in chuncks becuse my internet is unreliable.

The cell tower came back on Monday, then the entire network lost data connectivity. Tuesday morning I bought another extension cord and ran power from the generator to my modem and router, luckily the internet cables are all buried. As soon as i did that the cell data network came back on, but i was happy enough not to use it.

Power came back up wednesday afternoon. Only three days after everyone else in the neighborhood got theirs back. I am going to try to file a claim against the power company for the fuel I used to run the generator while every house around me had power, at a half gallon an hour it was more than my unemployed bidget could afford.

I spent all day yesterday clearing branches from my backyard. the in-sewer-ants company said they would cover that cost as well as repairing my fence. i have a thousand dollar deductible and a lot of time on my hands so I decided to take care of it myself, plus I need the workout. What I do not have is a chainsaw up to the task, apparently just because the saw has a 14" bar does not mean it can cut through a 14 inch thick trunk...

It was about 100 degrees with 80% humidity. I lost my shirt pretty quickly, sorry neighbors.

I am keeping all of the decent sized logs for winter fires. I have a heat pump but nearly free heat is always welcome.

I forgot to cancel the flowers i bought for the exs birthday. I brought them with me to the waffle house and made my waitresses day.

A lot of running around to do. I need to get my allergy shots, get a dog license, meet with the college veterans coordinator, get the verdict on a potential tenants backgroune check, and of course cut up some tree branches.

    Have a good one everybody.
