Experienced MMO player coming to lotro little advice?...
I haven't played this game for more than about 10 hours or so years ago... Currently in a top endgame raiding guild in swtor, and I am just getting bored. I am a big tolkien fan and figured I would try lotro again this summer before i start up my real educational path in the fall. I would be playing monday wednesday friday saturday sunday after 10pm PST if anyone knows of a good fit for me let me know.. I was also thinking of rolling a hunter but that could change depending on server needs, are hunters pretty viable endgame? Is the server hurting for different classes or roles? I need people to play with at the times i play and I need to make sure i roll the right character heh.
Don't worry too much about end-game stuff until you get there... which can take some time
Every class can be viable to end game but some will make it easier to get groups than others. Hunters are rather common, whereas captains and burgs are generally more difficult to get. Mini's also tend to have an easier time getting into groups.
But really it should come down to what you enjoy playing. The more common classes tend to be fun to play in the early levels of the game... whereas the less common classes can take some time to fully develop and be "fun" for a lot of people.
Play around with a few classes. The one you want to keep logging into should probably be the one you play up to cap.
Do everyone a favor and read your tooltips.

I couldn't agree with this more.
It sounds like you're interested in joining a kinship (guild). So maybe roll a toon to find a kinship you like, probably an established one that welcomes new players. Then you can pick a class based on any requirements they have. If they're happy with all classes fall back to Rawlor's advice
If you're thinking of mainly soloing the hunter is good, but can become a bit staid with skill rotations with a tendency to use just one or two rotations that will work. More versatile classes can be more fun to solo, especially in the later stages of the game.
A good alternative is to find a duo partner. Pretty much any two classes can complement each other well throughout the entire game. And in my personal opinion, you can't have more fun than two burglars duo'ing. It's a guaranteed giggle-fest!
Any class works fine while doing end game stuff, but the ones that make the run easier are usually "Support Classes", of course every group needs tanks and healers, but if you roll a captain, loremaster or burg, people will sure add you to their friend list since these classes make everyone else's life way easier AND are fun to play.
Personally I used to duo-level my burglar with a classmate's loremaster, and let me tell you that combining the crowd control and debuffs that both classes have, is one of the funniest (and powerful) things in the game. We could even complete around 90% of the quest in Angmar just the two of us on level (most of angmar quests are 6-man).
They can be a little tricky to play at the beggining, but later on they will be wanted in every raid.
That's just my opinion, if you feel you'd like to roll a hunter, go ahead, but if you want a challenge go Burglar or Loremaster, even they could be hard for newbies, but you're saying you are experienced so you should be fine.
