Kinda odd, little workshop out in the middle of no where. There's some anvils, hammers, and wood pieces all over the place. There's even an orc bunk bed. Just wanted to share my little discovery while I was out deeding.
Why couldn't the landscape dev connect Mirkwood to the Great River region. Remove the hill range blocking passage from the south of Mirkwood and open up the Brown Lands from the north. Kinda pointless to request this now but would have been nice when the Great River region was being created.
I love little things like that. Thanks for posting!
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, totally worn out & proclaiming "WOW, what a ride!"
Civ II rules after all these years......

That's because the landing before Mirkwood is instanced, Mirkwood is not an open area. You need to play the instanced section first, before the boat gets you to the "real" Mirkwood, when you travel there again.
If they ever revamp the area in a way that you don't have to play the forequest in the instanced area, then it will be possible.
Did you ever wonder why the entry to Moria was not connected to Eregion? It's the same thing. You need to play the quests a instanced area before you get to the "cleared" area (also instanced).
The designers of Moria and Mirkwood obviously thought it was a good idea.

So? He's played through the intro instance. Why can't he get from Mirkwood to GR after that?
A spaceship from another star / They ask me where all the people are
I tell them I'm the only one / There was a war, but I must have won

At one time Moria and Mirkwood were expansions that you had to buy before you could access them, so this was the mechanism that they used to gate it.

There are a number of similar cases in Middle Earth. Turbine talked about the why a long time ago.
IIRC - Turbine stated that the routing into regions is carefully laid out of game play. Turbine wants us to enter the region via the entrance and contact the 1st content area. The NPCs and the quests as we complete them will (does not always work) will vector and lead us to the 2nd content area. That way we are logically conducted thru the region and its content the way the designers want.
One common complaint (not applicable to an explorer like me) is customers that get off the planned tour. They get confused and lost. The one of two tour entrances prevent this problem. For the folks that do not need the build in tour guide like me it is easy enough for us to go our own way.
It would cause all kinds of issues for the "We need a tour guide" folks if there were entrances that allowed them to get into a region somewhere in the middle. They would have bypassed some of the content because it is over at a different entrance.
Many games use some sort of landscape restriction and build in tour guide to naturally channel our game play. This situation is very noticeable in the games that are interactive stories.
IMHO - It would be nice if there were swift travels our characters could unlock based on content completion. If you finished the first part of Great River, you would be able to teleport into the center from Mirkwood.

Unless stated otherwise, all content in this post is My Personal Opinion.
My level 63 l-m was wandering in Lothlorien last night and ended up in the Great Rivers area. It was a bit of a surprise to go from pale blue mobs to purple ones. I did get a fair bit of prospecting done before getting to close to a wolf and getting transported back to the border. At least, I found the first stable before I found the wolf, although I wouldn't be able to use it for a few levels yet.
I just recently discovered the same place as the OP while going back to complete an exploration deed for a level 75 character. Had no clue it was there and I've never run the quests there.
