Thread: Interesting Launcher Error

click on the launcher and I get:

System.ArgumentException: Cannot find font '?'
at System.Drawing.FontFamily.get_ GenericSansSerif()
at System.Windows.Forms.control.g et_DefaultFont()
at System.Windows.Forms.Control.G et_Font()
at System.Windows.Forms.Control.g et_FontHeight()
at System.Windows.forms.Label.get _PreferredHeight()
at System.Windows.Forms.Label.Sdj ustSize()
at System.Windows.Forms.Label.set _AutoSize (Boolean value)
at com.turbine.Launcher.InializeC omponent()
at com.turbine.launcher.Launcher. .ctor()
at com.turbine.launcher.launcher. Main()


Things I have done: set time defaults to USA mode, reinstalled framework1.1 and 1.1sp1, double clicked on the TurbineLauncher GDF, re-installed the game-
Now what?

For some reason, windows is failing to find the defailt font. Do you have any other problems with fonts in other programs?

no font problems with other programs.

Just a question about this error.

Does the error open it's own little window to be displayed?

When exactly are you encountering the error? Does it happen during the initial file check or is it later like when you are selecting a server to play on?

the error should name a font, ie its usualy tahoma it has problems with in which case you need to delete, hide or reinstall the font in the error

if no font is named in the error then the error logs may give tell you which font is missing, see here for where to find the log files

if the error isnt naming a font then the game\launcher is most likley looking for the font which lotro uses which off the top of my head is perpetua (but the log file should tell you which), if perpetua.ttf is missing from your pc then youll need to find a copy of the font, preferably from a PC you or a friend owns. iirc can be found on the windows install CD if you know which cab file to look in

the error pop ups after I click on the launcher icon, i get the waiting cursor then that error message instead of the sign in dialogue that used to pop up.
I have tried the two fonts re installed them both and did a clean boot too.
Same error message.

Noticed in your 1st post you installed the NET Framework stuff. There should also have been a Direct X 9 install and and at least 1 Visual C++ install, if memory serves.

I get the same message every time after loging in to a world like Meneldor:

Game error [201]
Can't open data files. Check that they exist and that you have permission to write to them. The program will now exit. [201]

no sorry this is not the same error as the OP

your error is caused by either permission problems, you to not have permissions to write to the folder where lotro is installed ie your running the game under XP with a logon account which is not an admin level account

or

you recieved errors while installing lotro and chose skip or ignore on the error in which case the files were not installed. you need to reinstall lotro without skipping\ignoring any files

or

youve tried switching to very high graphics and the texture files are missing.. in this case the launcher "should" or used to download the higres texture files but theres another way arround the problem

if you recieve the same errors while installing the next time try disabling your antivirus, failing that youll need to redownload lotro again in which case you may find it downloads faster if you download from steam

I got it to work and here is what I did, first I tried to use Steam and still got the same pop up error.
So I decided the heck with it, I re installed windows, DL all the updates, installed LOTRo and boom I can play.
cie la vie...
