AE attacks firing without a target - anyway to turn that off?

I've having this problem mostly on my lowbie champion but noticed the same problem on my other toons (I'm faily new and all my toons are still lower level).

I'm an older player and pretty slow twitch compared to many and I make use of the 'run to target' combat setting that means that if I make an attack and my toon is out of range or not facing the right way he will turn and close the distance. Super useful for me and my relaxed pace of play.

But I've noticed that most (all?) AE attacks simply attack as soon as triggered even if there are zero mobs in the area, or I'm not facing any of them and even if I dont even have a mob targeted.

Is there a combat setting that can change this that i might have missed? Idealy I'l like my AE attacks to work exactly like my single target ones (i..e run to targeted mob if not in range and turn to face target mob if not facing it)?

    thanks in advance

By "AE" I presume you mean your AoE skills?

if so, any AoE skills can be fired off randomly, Blade Wall, Swift Blade (Swift to Anger must be traited for Swift Strike to be Swift Blade), Cleave/Rend, Blade Storm, and Raging Blades can all be fired off when no target is near, provided you have the fervour pips for them to be used

    Vreal: Level 75 Warden
    Griminsborith: Level 75 Champion
    Orearry: Level 37 Burglar
    Togira: Level 36 Minstrel
    Knurlagn: Level 26 Runekeeper

Yes, thats basically my problem. I wind up wasting my AoE attacks because they have a range of 2.5M and the mob(s) I think I'm going to attack with it are 3M+ away and I waste the attack.

The game gives me a solution for this problem for single target attacks (the 'run to target' option) - which means if I miss-judge the distance to my primary target and try to attack it fixes it for me by closing the distance.

is there any ingame solution to this problem for AoE attacks?

Sorry there is no solution that I have ever found. What I have made a habit of doing is using a single target attack to check I'm close enough before using my AoE attacks. It is a pain, but nowhere near as big a pain as 'swiping' at empty air!

I'm not sure if this does it for everyone but when I target something and it is not within range there is a small little red "x" in the top corner (i dont remember which side) I'm not sure if it does it with the AoE's as well for I am to busy rolling my face across the keyboard to look up =P

all jokes aside I do not think there is a option to as you say the "ingame solution to this problem" but if you are having troubles with it, I would use your single target attacks if you are fighting one-two thing at a time (which i doubt you are) such as your "strikes" attacks and build up your fervour meter with wild attack and swift strike and use your AoE's when they are literally right in front of you

It isn't the answer you're looking for, but keep practicing. Eventually you'll learn the distance and will able to fire off our aoe skills manually without worry, it's just a skill that you'll develop as a player over time.

Personally I love that feature, I like to run in and use my traited bladewall to attack an enemy without having to worry about targeting them. After the attack and they become my target I can use a swift strike or a wild attack to begin my rotation.

Also when doing slayer deeds in lowbie areas I just run in an swing, loot, run on without having to bother with targeting unless they survive my first attack.

As has already been said, autorun to target is not possible due to the way the AoE skills work.

You can try doing small range corrections using mouse move (both buttons pressed).

You can also right click on the mob which will initiate the run-to-target so that you can hit it with an auto-attack. Then AoE away!

Same. I also use it if I want to kill an archer and a melee at the same time. Target the archer, then when the melee is close, use the AoE skills because they won't make you move. Saves some time, especially on the lower levels mobs.

How do you move your character around? You'll want to get used to using the mouse and w to move around. Get used to moving your finger up to trigger skills with the keyboard rather than clicking them with the mouse. The difference between clicking and keyboard is a word apart. Its like playing the piano you just need to practice moving your fingers independently.

this is not possible as far as I know, like mentioned before the easiest way to know if you're in range is to look for the red little ''x'' on the skills, every skill that is not in range will show this red x the instant you get into range 40m or whatever it will disappear.
