Terrific Tuesday of Tea, Coffee, and hobbitish pastries
Morning Landrovalrim,
I went to see Brave yesterday afternoon and enjoyed it greatly. It was good to get out and get my mind off of stuff, and the movie, besides being good, is quite an achievement.
As a bonus, there was a totally unexpected theatrical trailer for The Hobbit!! It looks very very good. One of my fears when I saw the photographs of the Dwarves was that they did not look like dwarves. But when you see them on screen, that fear melts away. They do indeed look like dwarves, and Gombur is satisfied. As he reminds me, not all dwarves are chiseled from the same stone!
Del, I hope you get through the storm ok, and I hope Faythe, BDR, and Val's Hubby continue to make progress.
On another front, I got my Cobra insurance, and its not as bad as I anticipated the cost would be. So the only major thing to be done is getting out of my lease. Hope I will hear something today.
Take care all

Thank you for opening, Doc, and I am very glad to hear that some things are moving forward for you. For me, waiting for the next step, good or bad, is the worst part of life's changes.
Things are still rocky around here. Between doing battle with daughter #2, pinching pennies until Mr. Lincoln screams for mercy, and trying to keep the children busy enough to forget to bicker, I am just trying to cling to my sanity.
Never try to teach a troll to sing. It frustrates you and annoys the troll.

Thanls for opening Doc. I was reading up on sea life yesterday (mainly because I am unemployed and very bored), I had fresh swordfosh for dinndinner and thought i would read up on that species. The article I read said that swordfish creates a controversy for people who keep kosher. The fish are born witj scales, but gradually lose them until they are smooth skinned by adulthood. I dont know why but that struck me as interesting.
Also, if you want nightmares gooe goblin shark.
I am with you on waiting for matters to resolve momma G. The GF made a decision that I most heartily didnt approve of last week. I over rea ted and said some pretty nasty things to her. Now she hasnt spoken to me in a week. I am not sure where that leaves our relationship, but she is coming back home tonight and we are going to talk tomorrow after work.
I put off mowing the lawn as long as possible. I bought a knee brace ( should have done that a week ago but I have been too depressed to go outside). I guess this test will determine whether I see a doctor again or not. It takes me over two hours to mow the lawn, and i walk just barely under two miles when i do it. The good thing about having healthcare through the VA is that it is completly free. The bad thing is that the level of care, and access to it, is not nearly what I am used to. I can't make appoontments for anything, because it takes a minimium of three months, but they take walk ins for just about anything. The doctor last time told me if the knee was still hurting in 7-10 days to come back in for an x-ray, but that wouldnt tell us anything because tue problem isnt with the bones in my leg. I'm not clear on theogic there. Today is day 10 and it definately still hurts, but I think i haveewrned to limp the right way to lessen the pain so I am not sure how to compare it to the pain from a week ago.
How is that for a rambling paragraph. I need to clean up my writting style if I am going to do this whole college thing. Next semester I am taking biology, chemistry, and an undetermined math class. Probably the same set of courses the semester after that. Then i move on to biochemisty, organic chemistry, and physics. Then if i get into vet school the hard stuff starts.
I hope today finds everyone doing well and everyone is safe. And I hope today we can all have great things come to us in abundance.
Last night was not a good night for the hubby. Pain issues. Gotta use the bathroom. Then the dogs get up to to see what's going on. The cats seem afraid there is some secret exit from the bathroom that we might use, so they get up too. The parrot wakes up and starts chattering about "who farted". Rinse and repeat about five times last night. I foresee a nap in my future.
Other than that, due to our situation most of the house looks like a bomb went off as there is such a cluttered mess. So, I'm trying to do some housework....and I just don't feel like it. Ah well, enough whining.

Have a good one everybody!
Having dealt with more private insurance companies (and knee injuries, thanks to my kids) than I care to think about, I suspect that the VA is trying to follow the private insurance model. Your first visit for a knee injury gets you common sense advice--stay off of it, apply ice, take nsaid meds--because so many people don't possess common sense. Second visit gets you an x-ray, because they are less expensive than an MRI, most people expect the doctors to do it, and missing a hairline fracture that turns ugly opens them up for malpractice. Soft tissue injuries generally require an MRI, and unless they are severe and obvious enough to require surgery, they leave you with the original advice, plus some general physical therapy.
Gee, that was cheerful, huh?

This one is for all you Game of Thrones fans out there:
Doc, that news about the Hobbit trailer is heartening! I am looking forward to that movie. Hope you hear something about your lease soon - fingers crossed.
Gweann, we are all here to pull with you in the tug-of-war for your sanity. Don't give up now!
BDR, hope you can talk things out with your girlfriend and that things get better with your knee soon. As for cleaning up your writing... at least you're a sciences student and not an English major!
Vala, you have a lot of pets! And my opinion is nap > housework.

I've got leather that's pretty much cased so I'll have to read through the thread later but I'll go ahead and post this real quick:
An acquaintance of my future mother-in-law had a birthday coming up and they needed gift notions. The fiance was requested to concoct notions but I guess I subsumed her charge. All I know about the gentleman in question is that he likes scotch (he is scottish) and flies (which is handy when he's an entomologist). Based on one of those notions I devised the below. I'm not sure how well it'll be received but it'll be easy to transport back to Scotland and it fits the fly theme. It also uses up the old keychain kit I've had knocking about forever.
The lettering was easy enough to draft in GIMP and the picture came out of some drawing guide somewhere thanks to Google Images. The transfer went pretty smoothly, as did the tooling, but it was pretty challenging. The small size was both a boon and a bane. I had to be extremely careful not to "tool outside the lines" but the small size helped walk the tools and such. And it only took about an hour to tool which was nice too. I used the point of the stylus to push down the spaces too small for the beveler and the spoon to sculpt the raised areas on the fly and give it a bit of dimension. I used the matting tool to add some texture to the rest of the space. With these dimensions (the whole thing's 2" wide) a border would have crowded everything so I just faded the matting around the edges.
For the staining I applied super sheen as a resist to the wings, eyes, and letters and then let it dry for the rest of the day. I used a couple of coats on the wings just to make sure they stayed clear. Then I slathered some Briar Brown over the entire piece. Since Briar Brown is a highlight it settled in the deeper areas and gave some contrast. To set the fly off a bit I gave him a thin coat of Carbon Black right over the high light. After it dried for a day I went over it with the satin finish and that cleaned it up a bit more and it'll seal in the finish so it stays in good condition. I treated the bottom and edges with kote so the whole thing should last a good long time.
Thwnks for the kond words alditha. I had just decided i was going to ask this girlbto marry me right before she made the decision i cant understwnd. I like to think we will talk things out tomorrow, but anxiety has me litterally sick right now.

If I was near ya,..I'd say let's go out for drinks at an Irish Pub!
I may not be Dr.Luv ,..maybe Dr.Suds,...I find it pleasant to chillax in a moderately calm place and chat things out.
so here's to you, Mister BD! Watch some late night TV then get some rest! You're brain is prolly wee overworked by now
I wanted to add some encouraging words for those who are ailing.
Stop ailing!!!
Forsooth!
I don't think I can offer you any sage advice, Mr. BD, but I'm sorry you seem to be having a crummy run of things lately. There's always a chance things might turn out for the best in the end but I don't suppose that's too comforting just now. =/
