hello people,
i have a hunter. i know that in a fellowship you have a tank but it is verry hard to not die while single playing levelimg up at low levels. it would be really nice either to get the hunter some new melee attacks or like in world of warcraft the hunter gets a pet that can "tank" for them in single player.
Hunters are one of the easiest classes to solo. If you pull too much then like any non-tank class you will get swatted. If careful of pulls then you can burn most things down before they even reach you.
Don't try to play this game like WoW or a WoW clone, because it isn't and you will fail. Learn the LOTRO hunter's way of battle and you will realize how easy low to mid levels are for them to solo.
No thanks. I like Hunters in LOTRO because they're not a pet class. I don't like managing pets, and the ones here have significant pathing issues. In addition:
Combat pets increase server loading, and Hunters are far more common than either of the pet classes in this game - we have enough lag issues without looking for more.
Combat pets would be a significant buff to an existing class, requiring that Turbine do a significant nerf to core Hunter skills to compensate (at least when using a pet). I can hear the screaming now.
No. I hate the pet system in this game and I've chosen my characters based on that.
I love my hunter. I don't want pets for her. I haven't had a problem with dying.
As you can see already, opinion is divided here. There have been many many threads on this same topic and they all turn out pretty much the same. For every player who says "I'd love for Hunters to have pets!" there are at least two or three who say "NO NO NO Hunters should not have pets dammit!"
And Turbine takes the easiest course, which is not to do pets for Hunters.
There are similar multiple threads about making skirmish soldiers more controllable, more like pets, and again for every player who says "Give us more control over our soldiers!" there are two or three who say "NO NO NO if I wanted a pet I'd be a LM or a Captain dammit!"
And again Turbine takes the easiest course, which is to leave soldiers the way they are, a sort of fire-and-forget weapon.
The fact that WoW has a certain feature does not constitute a reason for LotRO to have it too -- nor does it constitute a reason for LotRO NOT to have it. Features need to be considered on their own merits, including whether the feature would bring in enough money for WB to consider funding it.

As this is your first post... Welcome to the LoTRO forums.
As for pets for Hunters: NO, for all the reasons that have already been given.
I suggest you work with your Hunter some more and get used to what he can do in LoTRO.
Personally I hate pets. Hunters are easy to play and I love my hunter. I tried the captain and absolutely hated it, so I doubt I'll try the loremaster. Its just not my style. I love my hunter, I'm really liking my Rune Keeper but shes still young. And I love my gaurd oddly enough. But none of those have pets! Except for my pet rock of restoration, but I don't count that. If I wanted a pet I'd do a pet class, or run yet another skirmish. I have fellowed with LM and I like the bad guys sticking to the pet so I can kill them, its awesome but 90% of hunters would hate to have to control it. If your a good enough hunter you can kill the bad guys before they reach you most of the time. Catisa was right, hunters melee weapons are just for show, I dont even have my melee skills on my hotbar, I have to hold CTRL to use them because I just don't that often. If you want pets do a cappy or lm don't mess with my freakin hunter.
I don't think your suggestion would actually help with your problem I'm afraid. First, pets don't keep aggro well, even for LM, so hunters.....
Second, if you pull many mobs, your pet will die quickly anyway. Survivability isn't there strong point
Last, although I don't have a hunter, a lot of kin mates do, so I suggest maybe trying to deal with the mob before it reaches you. Try asking on your server for a hunter to give you pointers

^ Hunter in a nutshell.
The whole purpose of the Hunter is to range things, and drop them before they reach you.
If you want to fight melee, roll a champ.
If you want to use pets, roll a Lore Master.

mate no offence intended but learn how to play i have a hunter and have no problems killing anthying they are buy far the easiest toon to play
engage from max range and ya target is dead befoure it hits u
also craft gear or no matter what toon u play U WILL DIE lol
my biggest point is that u are an archer not malee class dont mock somthing and ask for change cos u cant use it as intended u are a hunter u have a range of 30 meaters plus why are u trying to tank or use malee skills sound like u picked the wrong toon or u are used to wow and its no brainer gaming style made for noobs and as many others have said getting a pet means nerfing the hunters skills
NO THANK U

for u to say this means u are not a hunter no offence but they just dont need one and i only been playing for a month i played champ and rune keeper as well
hunters have massive single target damage and require brains to take multi opponets but then again setting a trap aint that hard wile u pummel the lesser npc then cap the big guy zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz there is no reson for pets and lotro knows this its not lazy its maths
only people i could say want it easy are people who cant play the class asking for a pet lol also after ror expan u will be able to summon ya soilder in the areas that they permit thats ya pet lol now go away plz and dont destroy my class with a useless npc pet
Never compare this game to World of Warcraft, it is one of the worst things imaginable in the big book of LOTRO.
As for the OP, hunter's are in no need of pets. Even though it was some time ago, I remember levelling up, and I only ever died since I was new to the game and did not understand the mechanics of combat. A hunter's damage is relatively significant when levelling up, which makes quests easier to do. Use traps, make sure you stand 40 metres away from your target and use a morale potion if you need to.
I tried the captain and absolutely hated it, so I doubt I'll try the loremaster.
Yeah...so did I (I leveled up a Captain to have the summon skill available to help people), but I found a way to make a Captain tolerable. My Captain uses the Archer pet, set to attack what I attack. That way, he doesn't agro random mobs and can be used to do a ranged pull. Works pretty well. Most of the time, my Archer works as "fire and forget".
The other aspect of my Captain is that his crafting is as a Yeoman...he's a "Captain/Cook".

Hunters in this game dont need pets they already have incredible dps. I have played a LM since i started playing this game and Petsw can be far more problematic then they are worrth at times, this is what ive seen im riding thru an area with my pet out before i mounted ocasionally i get tagged by a mob not enouigh to dismount me but the ride does take damage, when i reach my destination (and im not in combat btw) the pet can take off on its own and go to who knows where, to attack a mob ive riden thru, this is at best annoying however, ocasionally a mob gets a nice hit an dismounts me, and the pet runs off and if i dont get it just right (timing) it will not attack the mob im attacking and will eventually just disappear. and as you cant recall a pet thats in combat its gone. On a captain with a herald i see the same thing over and over just like the lm the "pet" gets a mind of its own. Other strange behaviors i target a specific mob and lo and behold the pet take off to some mob somewhere not sure where but no where that i can see. Do you really want to have a pet that at times is uncontrollable? probably not, besides aI have a hunter and with traps and other skills a pet is simply not needed.
So far the hunter is the strongest class I have played, in fact I find him to be very unbalanced compared to the other classes.
And even though he does his best from a distance, with the number of close/melee attacks he has he is no slouch when it comes to the toe to toe fighting.
My other classes are comparatively weak. My guardian is still to low of a level to have any distance attack other then the hobbit throw a stone; yes, I had to build up my guardian to even throw a stone. Which means most of the time she just wades in swinging.
My champion has a bow but no special attacks, it's just damage based on the bow, and she only gets one shot; long cool down means the mob is on her before she can get off another shot.
My loremaster has two pets a crow and a bear, the crow seems most beneficial because the bear draws mobs like .50 cent tacos. But with what little damage her spells do, and the long cool downs means she is no good in close fights. In fact if I could get her staff attack off quicker she probably wouldn't use spells as much; her staff does more damage then most of her spells.
I solo all the time, my hunter didn't die the first time till he was level 20. Using the hunter right means most of your battles are done before the mob gets to you.
it would be really nice either to get the hunter some new melee attacks or [expletive] the hunter gets a pet that can "tank" for them in single player.
When you reach L20, you can start to earn Skirmish Marks, which you can spend to call a Protector Soldier for you in the open world. You get an hour of playtime for every token you buy, which should be enough to have him tank for you for the parts you really need it.
However, if you're just looking for something to EZ-mode hold aggro for you while you just mindlessly mash attack buttons, that's not what its for...you're going to still have to learn to use your CC, use your aggro management tools, and kite sometimes too.
I have said this before ... and, for the record, here again ... I DO NOT want a pet on the screen I DO NOT want one in the scene I DO NOT want a dog or bird I think the entire idea is absurd I DO NOT want one sir or ma'am I DO NOT want one, Sam-I-am! What I want is skills that work and maybe a single target DPS perk and a reasonable escape skill that will work in the Moors - that would be a REAL perk! That is what I want sir or ma'am That is what I want, Sam-I-am! /not signed

Marisibelle & Melissabelle [L85 Brgs], Rosilyn [L85 Cp] One is truly rich who has friends.
On topic,
The way the class is made, it really doesnt need pets. If you really do have trouble with it, read a bit about Hunter's crowd control, and if that isn't enough, play your toon in a group, so you won't have to bother about mobs in melee.

I've always found that attitude strange, not wanting more control on the skrim soldiers. That's like buying a car and say: "Nah, forget the brakes and steering wheel, i don't need those. I just want to start the engine and have the car go whereever it wants to."
Because it wouldnt mean you'd HAVE to always control it (you can just forget about a LM pet), but it would allow some control IF you need it.

There are a couple of factors. One is that if there are pet-like controls on soldiers, it may be hard to plays with them if you *don't* use the controls. The other is that, if there are pet-like controls, Turbine will tend to write scenarios that require you to use those controls to beat the skirmish. In the end "optional" things like controls tend to become mandatory. This is also why I am in favor of the relatively high price on running a soldier on the landscape. It strongly inhibits Turbine from writing landscape content that requires a soldier to complete successfully.
The automotive equivalent is buying a car that is only going to be driven locally on residential streets. You don't need--and for gas consumption reasons, don't want--a 400HP V-8. It would be useless and counterproductive to the intended use of the vehicle. (Though a closer analogy would be requiring someone who is used to--and likes--automatic transmissions to buy a vehicle with a standard transmission.)

Or vice versa. I have heard you grumble often enough about having to drive something with an automatic transmission.....
Returning to the topic, my favorite character is my LM, and I love my Onyx Lynx, who is a better fighter than I am. But I would not like to have to manage the Lynx and the soldier in the same fight. I've only got ten fingers.
I don't see how WoW has anything to do with this game. There's no reason for hunters to have pets. Hunters are OP as it is. I've killed mobs 10 levels higher than me with a hunter (killed lvl 30 when I was lvl 20) without even losing 1/3 of my morale.
LMs need the tanking pet because they have long casting time and not huge damage, and they're really soft. If you want pets for hunters I'd say you'd also have to drop about half their dps just to make it not-ridiculously overpowered.
