I should be going to Moria soon, and am trying to decide if I want to buy a goat. Reading the forums it is about 50/50 on the opinions. So if you have done it and are willing to give me your sage advice, I would love to hear what you think.
Thanks a bunch!!

yeah, you do need a goat; you can't use horses there; but you get a free goat doing quests, which gives 32% speed, and then you can get kindred with either iron garrison miners or thorin's hall, and get a 62% goat
IMO, if you use your horse mounts frequently, like I do, and can afford it, I would. Maria is huge and running all over can take forever and there are a lot of quests (like everywhere else) that takes you to one far point of moria and then back. Also, by the time you get your rep high enough with the Iron Garrison Miners to buy one, you're pretty much done with Moria.
So, in short, I would say yes. But like I said, my opinion.
Before the Moria Revamp I would have said: Go for it, buy 1.
Nowadays you get a free one very early on, so it's much more
your own choice, instead of it being almost a need.
Even though the goat is only 135% runspeed and travel
will not be as fast as possible, it is fast enough to outrun
most enemies and therefore very useful, especially since it's
a quest-reward and therefore completely free.
Unless you want a specific goat for cosmetic reasons,
you will only be using the mount for 10 levels or so, so I'd
have to say never to store-goats and recommend against
the reputation-goats.
Seeing your level, you could probably just do epics, and get
out within a level or 3, making goats even less useful...
edit: as posted in a post from someone who types a lot faster:
the free goat is not 135 but 132%, but still fast enough to
outrun your enemies.

Well, I found that you can run off a cliff easily enough when not paying attention while moving around Moria. A goat just means you find and fall off the cliffs that much faster!
With my hunters, I always turned off run buffs and never used a mount in Moria other than the stable mount (preferably the swift travel ones). Less dying that way and you get around just as quickly without running into things when you turn your eye for a second from the screen.
I finished all the quests in Moria and never bothered getting a goat. The stable travel routes were fine for me. I seem to be more patient than the average gamer...
Loop round the top level a few times, this should get you a load of rep items to enable you to get the goat from Thorins. At 55 you're 10 levels (I think) above the mobs, but if you find it slow take a friend and share the rewards. If you go deeper, make sure you have Ancient Dwarf damage, otherwise it'll be superslow.
Other option for Thorins Rep is the Icereave Mines in Forochel, the dwarves in there drop rep tokens too, and you'd be advancing a different deed at the same time.
I have been to Sarnur a few times, so I will check my kindred status with them to start. I may enter when I can, (my legendary staff is still 9 and I need 10), and just see how it goes. I am one of the "less patient" players and find mindlessly running to the end and back boring. (Or boring after it is the 10th time you have had to run up to this corner of the map and back again.) And usually the travel routes don't always go where I want to.
Thanks for all the great input.

Speed isn't as important as hit points on your goat mount. A 100 morale mount is okay for some areas, but will just mean you are constantly dismounted in others. (I am assuming the free goat is a 100 morale mount, correct me if I'm wrong.)
The Thorin's Hall goat is a good looking beast, fairly easy to get, and is a 62%/250 mount. Thorin's Hall rep is easy to get and one of the more worthwhile ones. The deeds in Sarnur are worth getting (beast and dourhand) and when you are at Kindred, you can purchase a permanent Map to Thorin's Hall for 100 rep items. Thorin's Hall is a convenient place to map to as it has a skirmish camp handily outside the Hall, mailboxes, vault, and AH within easy distance of each other (no zoning once inside the Hall), and, even more important for the over level 50 adventurer, Relic and Forge NPCS in the Great Forge. And, of course, the Superior Forge for weaponsmiths and armorsmiths and Swift Travel to other major hubs.
So, all in all, Thorin's Hall rep has a lot to offer the avid adventurer.

this. a goat is absolutely not necessary. I levelled 4 toons through Moria when it first came out when the only goats available were the Miner's rep goats, never got one (well, my Captain did, but it was well after he hit the then cap of 60), and never missed it. rep was far better spent on the guards to get your legendary trait. my champ levelled through Moria after the Mirkwood preorder gave all my toons a free goat (RK as well, though he's still in Moria), and my other 4 have several meta-deed goats and a couple treasure-hunt goats spread out amongst them, but I still don't recall riding all that often (of course I'm not in Moria very often nowadays, so that doesn't necessarily mean much. LM is nearing Moria so we'll see). but anyway to answer the *need* question, a goat was not necessary back before they nerfed mob perception radius, so its certainly not necessary now. it will be convenient now and again, so if you have one readily avaialble, I suppose there's no reason not to get it, but you shouldn't feel you need to go out of your way.
Still 50/50 on the goat, I got Thorins hall kindred rep, got the goat and the travel to Thorins hall rep. I am happy with both and would say for future travellers, do it. Cost me 5 gold, but I have over 50, and what do I need all that gold for anyway?
I like the extra port for swift travel etc. and I like the goat in Moria. I use it quite a bit, lots of places to go and like elsewhere, it is far away.
Oh yeah, and you have to hoof it to the next point before you get the option to travel on the routes. BUT LOL, as was pointed out, there are a lot of cliffs to fall off of, so stay awake while running in there!!!

At L55 you should go to Moria immediately - your level is already halfway through the content that's in there.
Before going to Moria I ground TH rep points in Sarnur & Forochel to get that goat for 5G but I'm not sure there was a huge, huge need. There are quite a lot of stable travel points in there.
At 55 you can clean up in Sarnur, get the rep for the goat and a couple/three virtue +1s (slayer deeds). I got the gimme goat later for my founder's account, but my F2P account I had my (then 45) burglar slog through Sarnur for goat rep. Nothing like having a decent goat from the get-go in Moria. Before the Thorin's Hall goat was available, I had 5 other characters go through Moria, only able to get enough Miner's rep when they were all but done with the area! Only one got a goat from them. Getting a goat to start is a vast improvement.
I ran in Moria before the latest revamp without getting a goat. I wanted one, but rep was harder to come by and there was no quest reward goat. I didn't see the point in a slow goat, so I went without.
Granted, I did run with a hunter through Moria...makes things easier and my toon was a guard so I would send an acorn to the hunter as needed. Plus, the hunter (my husband) knew the map/stable routes super well - we got around just fine without a goat.
I hear travelling in Moria is much easier now - and you get a goat as a quest reward. That said, I really enjoyed Moria and being on foot forces you to really check out the scenery - not a bad thing in my mind. But I will say I was pretty happy to see sunlight again when we got out!

Yeah, no replies to "should I get a mount" from Hunters :P
I recently took an Alt Captain through re-vamped Moria. I wasn't really "power leveling", but I was smart leveling, trying to get through it moderately fast while still "re-experiencing" it, since it'd been a while. I finally got Kindred as I was finishing up the Moria-focused Epic Quest Line, hitting about level 61, and exploring into the Foundations of Stone for the first time.
Unless you're hurting for cash (hard to do), I'd say get the Kindred goat when you can. The added hit bonus means you're less likely to get tossed off, and the speed boost is welcome when you're finishing up the Epic Quest line and exploring things for the heck of it. Even if your main questing in Moria is over, it's a definite Nice to Have.
Kindred status with the Ale Association will also allow you to buy a goat with a unique skin ( used to be anyway, kinda lost track of all the quadrizillion shop mounts ).
