I'd say roll a BA as your first being able to pew pew at 40m is good for raking in points without getting yourself killed. But as it stands strating a new creep with comms you'll be pretty pathetic till rank 6-7 since at that point you'll finally be able to start to catch up in buying stuff with comms, its funny though the prices for stuff match DP for the most part although your ability to gather DP was about 5 times better then comms not to mention the fact you can't even stock up more then 10k comms at one time which won't get you anywhere on a new creep...
My creeps have been ranked for a long time, same ranks for nearly 2 years now (reaver and warg). Now I've known simply by reading the forums how hard it is for newly ranked creeps, but I just wanted to test it out myself. The result was fairly painful. I made a spider, and over the course of 3 days I got to rank 2 and died to numerous HORRIBLE freeps I've known from freep side. Keep in mind I wasn't out to win any 1v1's, and honestly I shouldn't. But even in group settings if a ranged class saw me I was dead.
That being said, judging by the amount of time I estimated it would take me to rank up to 6-7, get at least 5-6 audacity and all the skills I was capable of, I really felt like the time involved in doing so would be comparable to leveling up a freep and getting them semi geared enough to be competitive. So time involved to be moderately competitive between freeps and creeps seems about even. But it also depends on the class of the freep as well, unfortunately.
However, beyond that is where the balance becomes extremely swayed in favor of freeps. Freeps go on to get FA's, Limlight shinies, maxed out virtues and can really polish their freep up to be more than just competitive, but rather dominate. Creeps at that point never really grow after they reach the moderately competitive stage. They get a few battlefield promotions and a few new skills.. that's it. The gap goes from slightly in favor of freeps to greatly in favor of freeps.
My personal opinion; Give something to ranks 8 or 9+ creepside. Make the battlefield promos better, unlock that 7th class trait ( seriously? it's been how long? ), beef up DPS and mitigations and give them an uber skill or two.
For the low ranks < 6 I honestly don't see much of a need for change other than skill costs, which need a tremendous reduction. If played smart you can still contribute a little bit and rank up, but it's tricky. But I almost feel like that investment is needed. It needs to be tough otherwise we end up with a massive creep population, similar to wargs and minis now, because most people are just ezmoders unfortunately. The flip side of that is it's not all that much fun and could be a deterrent for players without 5 previous years experience, so I dunno.

my 2 cents
That about sums up my experience too, except that I haven't gotten my Champion to 75 yet (at 69 safely parked). For what I have seen, I wouldn't even want to bring him to the Ettenmoors as a Champion seems to be both extreme damage and survivability in the same package. Maybe not on par with Minstrels or Wardens (Wardens only do damage or survive, not bot at the same time), but the sheer damage is unbelievable. I do understand that the ones I have met are probably high ranked with very good gear, but still I usually run when they target my Warg... :-)
I would really like to roll something else than the Warg I have now (meaning being able to buy some skills, infamy I can get for "free"), for example a Black Arrow or a Warleader, but it is only possible to get one creep skills, even when I run the dailies on 2-4 of them.
I know some Hunters and Burglars can't survive in a fair fight, so they have to camp in stealth to kill low ranked creeps, but if one is just gathering the 10-20 needed items to become even able to run when needed, it doesn't really feel that nice to me. Especially lame thing is to camp at the slugs to wait when the creep is already in a fight and has used all it's skills (so everything is on CD). If this happened on the "normal" game, the ones doing it would get a slap on the wrist for harrassment... ;-)
So when creeps PvE, they get PvP:d to death. They don't have a choice but to die.
PS: I still keep trying to leech in the fights, even this won't stop me from having fun in PvMP, which is amazing when one gets to the point of doing it finally.

As it stands now, if you purely pvp, then you can't even get your first rank one skill until midway into rank 3
Just a few weeks ago my wife decided she wanted to give Creep side a go. So she made a Warg and I dusted off my Rank 4 War Leader. The experience was decimating for her and me. After trying to PVE, key word there is "try". We where blasted apart by Freeps hunting greenies. Nothing against them mind you, it is a PVP zone. Until we ran into one particular Burglar on my server that would un-mercilessly hunt us down no matter where we went. HH, he was there, scouting Lumber Camp, he Found us, go to Isen, yup he's there. Mind you my wife is a fresh out of the box Warg with no movement speed buff in stealth and no HIPS so he would get her first and then rip me apart. My heals where not strong enough to keep up with his damage. Even at Rank 4 I have what 4 attacks as a War Leader? She has very limited speed and stealth rating. All in all it was a very frustrating day for her and I and she has tried to go out and give it a go without me, to try and rank up to buy new skills, but still she is plagued by the same Burglar hunting her down or any low rank creep.
I even tried to illustrate to her what it was like to fight a freep, I took my LM out who is very poorly geared and just used auto-attacks, Staff strike, and Staff sweep on her and still beat her. She was very disheartened. Then I was going to show her what to look for when fighting a LM solo and again, our wonderful Burglar friend jumped out and killed her even finding us in the remote corners of the Moors.
The point is this, fresh out of the box creep are way to underpowered. Not only does a freep get the advantage of having a massive skill set, they get to gear out while having fun. Creeps get to gear out while getting blasted repeatedly until they can stand on their own. To make matters worse enough time has elapsed to allow hard core freeps to acquire full audacity and against creeps it's just no contest. It's kind of like if some body builders went to a preschool to wrestle around and find new opponents to test their strength. That would not paint a pretty picture.
Creeps need a boost of some sort, it is way too difficult and frustrating to get Commies and renown to purchase skills necessary for competition. I wish Turbine would consider PvMP and try and spruce it up a bit. As it is now the current system is very accommodating to veteran players and a total trash heap to new players. Very discouraging to anyone who would like to start a new character.
Throughout all the gaming of the freeps, they have had it comparatively easy. No fear of wargs ambushing them, no fear of a horde of reavers and defilers tearing them to shreds, no nothing. We, the creeps, should have been made to change that. We should have given the freeps a challenge. They should go to the moors at their own risk. What should be said is, "The moors is only a place for the strongest." Instead, they say, "Oh, lets go there. I hear there are a ton of newbies that don't have any skills yet. I've been needing target practice for my first age weapon." I thought creeps were supposed to give a challenge.
When they (switching out of angry creep perspective) can barely survive long enough unless gifted with omni-patience, challenge rests in the hands of those lucky rank 15 monster players who can make the freeps pay through the nose. When i'm on my blackarrow (rank 3, i think), the most i can contribute or even do in the game is type inspiring speeches in the OOC channel. And when the only thing to do is fearful PvEing, i switch to my lv 75 guardian. To answer the original poster's question, you have to resort to that because otherwise you can't amount to much. I would recommend a reaver, like the other's have said, and grind comm's until you have enough for some good traits and audacity. then try and get a couple of people in the same rut you're in and team up. Maybe a tribe too, for some help.
