My first proposition is that Jewellers be allowed to create a new item: a polished or treated whetstone. Their purpose is to sharpen weapons or tools (effectively repairing them) while on the road. They can only be used on edged/bladed weapons.
These whetstones would suffer their own damage when used to repair weapons and tools. Perhaps the Polished Whetstone cannot be repaired. A Treated Small Whetstone would only be effective for Journeyman level weapons or less. Perhaps in response Clubs and such would suffer from less wear, or would have more hit points and/or be less expensive to repair at a proper shop.
The second proposition is for a Needle, crafted by a Metalsmith. It used on cloth armour and cloaks - perhaps even leather. It works in a similar manner to a Treated Whetstone. Repairing leather would incur more damage to the Needle than if used on Light Armour. Perhaps if the character has a Spool of Thread relevant to the armour or cloak, the Needle need not suffer damage.
I figure this has been mentioned before but my search yielded no results.
Whetstone/needle idea - it has several problems. First, we alredy have lots of whetstones in the game as crit materials for weaponsmiths of various tiers. Second, its that it is limited to the sharp bladed weaponry, dismissing a few other weapons - clubs, hammers, staves. What about the bows and arbalets? Third - needle will help light/medium armour, but what about heavy?
Instead, it could be named a repair kit and would then be applied to any weapon/armour damaged, with the higher tiers of kit repairing more damage per try that lesser tiers and having more uses before used up.
Last, "repairing in field" is an offer in store, so i doubt, any such solution would be implemented, since it diminishes store purchases rewards for Turbine.

Thank you, Turbine, for listening and giving us an opt-out of FE! Good work!
Something similar already exists: the (Superior) Repair Anvil. You can get the recipes from the Men of Bree if you are a Weaponsmith or from Thorin's Hall if you are a Metalsmith.
Once placed everyone can repair their equipment for five minutes. While repairing with the normal anvil is quite expensive, the superior one lets you repair for the normal cost (i.e. no discount).

I wasn't clear enough. I was suggesting using those whetstones found in game, and allowing a jeweller to create a new item, a "Polished Whetstone" from the raw whetstones that can be found.
Clubs, hammers and staves could not be repaired in this way. To augment this, perhaps they should have higher item hit points and/or are cheaper to repair.
As far as bows I don't know. I guess they'd be lumped in with Clubs, Hammer, etc.
As for Heavy Armour, well... they'd be out of luck with a needle! That's the small bonus a person has for using Light or Medium armour. Shields also can't be repaired in this way.
Also, with the Needle, the appropriate cloth or thread should be with the character, as well. I don't like the idea of a generic repair kit because it's too abstract. I like my suggestions because they add a minor feel to the game, I think. It's not really about making a character more powerful. Although the rest of your suggestion is plausible.
But yeah, I forget about the "Repairing in Field" option. That kind of kills it, doesn't it? Profit is such a double-edged sword for creative minds! Unless they made the Repairing in Field option more awesome I guess this wouldn't work too well.
