I have lived with the in game chat client limitations for a long long time but im so starting to get frustrated with it for several reasons ill list them below.
1. I dont want or need to see every kinmates login and out message.
2. frequently for no apparent reason (with a chat tab open) i find myself immobile in the middle of doing something because for some bizarre reason the game decided it wanted me to chat.
3. lack of channels Id like at least 1 more channel please.
I doubt an "event" channel will really help. You going to get people that are not interested connected to the channel. Tickets will get raised. One or more GMs are going to come. Stop with the tickets. Stop with the fighting on the channel. Zip it.
I've never seen Turbine enforce usage on a channel. If someone is talking about dinner in Bree LLF. There is nothing you can do except ignore the talker. Turbine will not force them to switch to Bree OOC.

According to the strict letter of the law, or someones interpretation of the same, none of the existing channels is safe to do a broadcast event. Landroval now has two huge "broadcast" events per year and may implement more. What do you suggest can be done? No one at any game event wants to take the time to send in tickets on any trolls. a dedicated channel for events means any trolling "should" get some disciplinary action post haste.
By the way, one person in the 9th band of the day during our event got an account warning for singing in regional. So they do enforce with some kind of penalty. Nevermind the other 9 bands "sang" the night away in regional with no warnings.

if they cant or wont implement by original suggestiosn i offer aat least one solution to what i consider spam
modify the current kinship chat into to two sections one called kinship chat the other kinship notifications. I am an officer in a guild and ocasionally have to put out forest fires its a major pain in the .... to have to scroll back thru a gazillion log in and out "spams" to locate the potentially offending conversation.
We need an Event channel that can be used for a radio-like broadcast for whatever event is taking place.
It wouldn't be considered "spam" if all of an event's dialog, lyrics and such were posted there.
This is really necessary because /say doesn't travel far enough for large RP and social events.
At least one more channel Tab would be a blessing, too!

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, totally worn out & proclaiming "WOW, what a ride!"
Civ II rules after all these years......
As an officer, knowing when kinmates log in and out is very useful, so I wouldn't want that to be changed... but if it bothers many people as spam, having it as changeable option would be nice.
Definitely need more chat channels and tabs. Definitely.

I do not have a good suggestion. The difficulty is that Turbine does not want to do anything. They want us to get along and play nice. Turbine wants everyone to obey their one size fits all situations rules.

This situation is rare. This person probably got gigged for a spam violation. Too many tells per minute.
IMHO - Turbine creates a event channel. Turbine is going to expect the users to obey all the current chat channel rules such as no spam or hogging the channel. Turbine appears to keep their Game Masters on a very short lease. The Game Masters do not have any discretion in their decisions. Policy is all defined in the "one size fits all situations" rule book.

My top three all have to do with user created channels:
1) The ability to see who's online in a user channel
2) The ability to moderate your own user channel (invite, kick, ban, etc.)
3) The ability to send a global broadcast as the creator or admin of a user channel (basically a tell to everyone that is currently joined on the channel to announce raids forming and such)
Had those in my other game and loved them.

Thank you for the honest reply. this suggestion as well as probably all others here in this forum will just slide off into oblivion it seems.

I would love to be able to chat with people out of game as well as people in the game from inside the game. In other words IRC connections to the game itself. You would of course have to have a character (chat name) and valid account to access chat on that server. This way our friends who maybe don't feel like playing the game anymore could keep in contact with us and might be more inclined to want to come back and rejoin us. Nothing stokes the fire of wanting to play like good friends. Also for people in the military or who work jobs like I have with the fire department that stuck on duty for days on end could keep in touch with the kin/game friends via IRC on devices that the game won't run on.

As player run events become popular the need for an "event" chat channel that displayes regionally, but can be turned off, would seem to be an obvious choice.
Why not just create a new channel called "event" (type /joinchannel event) and add a new tab to your chat box (just right click to add a new one)? With Glff out there -- the channel of choice for trolls -- you won't have to worry too much about off topic nonesense.
