I've kinda been wondering since Rohan was announced. LotRO has a lot of horses in it already, and Rohan is going to widely expand the equine menagerie. Will LotRO hold the record for horse mounts in an MMO? Does it already?
Is there an official record for mounts in general? What MMO would hold the mount record? I don't have a copy of the Guinness Book of World Records 2012: Gamer's Edition. Thanks for any answers/opinions!
World of Warcraft has at least 200 mounts when you count all of them including limited edition and no-longer-available mounts. And they have a huge variety of mounts while LOTRO only has horses and goats. I doubt LOTRO would be at the top of that list, though it would be interesting to know for sure which MMO has the most mounts.

The OP specifically stated horse mounts, not mounts in general.

I was interested in both, but I didn't think for a minute that LotRO would beat WoW or maybe EQ2 for total mounts. Horses though--LotRO could be the king. I don't know, so I was wondering if more savvy people had some opinions.
(And this thread wasn't supposed to be for comparing sizes of collections, but whatever gets us to September. LOL.)

SWG had 67 vehicles (12 craftable, the rest from various rewards, some of the rewards could be recrafted to improve the stats) and 25 mounts (about 5 were rewards, the rest craftable) which makes a total of 91 "riding" options, all crafted and recrafted vehicles colorable of course (so you have the whole Hengstanger content in one vehicle ). 24 of the speeders could hold passengers, from 1 to 10 (Gunship, doable by getting people into the vehicle, then kick 3 from the group and invite 3 more in order to let them enter).
In the list I checked a few vehicles might have been missing.
Also there were 11 Instant Travel vehicles avaiable to reach every shuttle port on the planet or - for some models also several stored locations. They could not be "mounted" but had a nice 3D model when you called them. The newer ITVs would also be able to transport a vehicle, so you could bring peopel with you (like the hunter in Lotro)
Well I have 43ish horses on my main and am kinda OCD about collecting as many as I can. I won't spend TP on store exclusive mounts but just about every available in game aquirable mount I've gotten. A few, like from gift boxes and such, I've missed out on..but that's the way the cookie crumbles. I wasn't going to spend hours and hours and hours and hours and hours picking flowers to try and get one.

That's an inspiring achievement. I really didn't even realize there were as many as 87 horses and goats total.
So, based on widespread forum opinion, I think we can conclude that when Rohan releases, LotRO can be proclaimed be The Equestrian MMO, the MMO of Kings, and therefore the King of MMOs. There is clearly a marketing opportunity among the young women and old cowboy demographics.
Horses are so much cooler than Dragons. I currently hate dragons in MMOs, so you can count on it being cool to hate dragons in MMOs within a year or two. The best thing about Elder Scrolls Online so far is that there aren't any dragons in it. The worst thing about 2014 so far is that How to Train Your Dragon 2 is scheduled to hit theatres. If there is anything worse than making dragons into grinding fodder for raiders (no offense meant to the LotRO devs for their adventures into dragon land), it's making them into pets for kids to tame, harness up, and ride.

I just wonder if the new war steeds will make all these mounts we've been collecting obsolete, since we will be able to ride them anywhere. They won't have the combat abilities outside Rohan, but they will be customizable cosmetically, so most people will probably want to ride those around most of the time I assume.

Well hopefully they'll be the 68% horses at least and not 62% or they won't be ridden all that much regardless of cosmetic look....
For the few people out there that says to themselves, "Self! What's another 6% speed gonna achieve for me?" Consider driving down the street and see how fast you pass things at 6mph.
The new warmounts, as has been stated else where ( do a search you'll find it ), will only be able to ride in designated areas within Rohan. Thus all the other mounts will still be useful outside of said zones.
Unless something has been changed between now and the time RoR comes out.

Actually I believe what they have stated is that you can ride the warmounts anywhere, but you will only be able to use their skills / mounted combat in the one area.

9. Can I use my War-steed at all outside of Rohan?
Yes, you can ride your War-steed anywhere you can currently ride horses in LOTRO but remember that fighting from horseback is only possible in the open plains of Rohan.

34 horses on my main, because I just collect for the sake of collecting them. Gives me another something to do. But I did gulp when someone said 87. I have to get busy. Is that number verified someplace?
When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse, out of the corner of my eye.
Every time you make plans, a Dev smiles.

And then try it in Lotro and see how many of your group members ask you to wait.
You only need 97.024% of the time to reach your destination. That means that in 10 minutes you are 17.9 seconds faster then your group members.
Yes, I know, it's ridiculous, still people notice the difference.
This game may have alot of mounts but they are are pretty useless. There is only two types of mounts and even then they really aren't that different. Having the amount of mounts that they do of all basically the same thing is hardly a good thing.

Well, Rohan will bring a third type of mount so wouldn't that make three types: goats, normal horses, and war-steeds? But like someone else said, will old horses now be "obsolete", or anything different other than fixed cosmetically? It will be interesting to see if there is any distinction. War-steeds could be a little slower than top-end normal horses because of heavier barding. They look fast in the videos though--one can assume to make things more exciting than reality.
