oh, I'm stuffed. And today's title is actually accurate. Company president hosted this morning's pancake breakfast. Pancakes, bacon, sausage, eggs, biscuits, fresh fruit, maple syrup, coffee, orange juice, grapefruit juice... It was nom nom nom...
Now I need a nap...
Good morning Landroval, help yourself to the pancake breakfast. The coffeehouse is open!
Re: Thursday President's Pancake Breakfast and Coffee
Oooo, I wish we got pancake breakfasts! Om nom nom. Thanks for opening, Slammy.

I'll have to wait until I get home to have a look... youtube and most video sites still blocked here at work. But looking forward to seeing how it's going!
I played your moon battle game (forget what you called it) - it was kind of fun - looks like it was a great learning exercise.
Garaf - I like your idea of a housewarming once you get yourself up here! I'm in!
Re: Thursday President's Pancake Breakfast and Coffee
Welby, your videos, as always, are superior.
It may be nearly noon over here but it was the last time I'd get to sleep on a "real" bed for awhile so I figured I'd indulge it. I'm disassembling the frame today and a guy's coming by this afternoon to do a thorough scrub of the mattress (though I understand it's more like a rinse and suction) to make sure there's no buggies or anything in it. After that I figure I'll fold the mattress up and "seal" it with some plastic wrap (it's a handy advantage of a fancy foam mattress).
Meanwhile Gunolf's strolled into Isendale and I figure that's where I'll leave him till this is all over. Makes a decent stopping point. Ya'll have a good 'un!
Re: Thursday President's Pancake Breakfast and Coffee
Afternoon, Landrovalrim,
Welby, you are awesome sir.
I meant to post this earlier today but I forgot. enjoy it.
The Battle of Waterloo
Yes, my fellow Landrovalrim of the Coffee House (and others who come in, lurk, enjoy the spread and never post!) the 18th of June is nearing, and with that comes my final edjumication about Waterloo.
This time I am going to do something different. Today I am just going to say a few words to refresh the situation, then starting on June 15th, the day the French Armee du Nord under the Emperor advanced over the border between Belgium and France to come to grips with the Army of the Low Countries under Field Marshal the Duke of Wellington, and the Prussian Army of the Lower Rhine, under FeldMarshall Prinz von Blucher, I will talk about facets of the battle. Then on June 18th, I will describe the last stage.
Waterloo is not only one of the most famous battles in history, but it is also one of the most war-gamed, written about, made into movies and documentaries, and painted. I thought that this time, I would incorporate some visual aids and make this, my final go at the battle, something to perhaps really hold peoples interest. (and the resulting use of all the pictures at once would probably blow up the forums, thereby earning me and gombur an eternal banning!)
Anyway, here is the situation that led up to the battle. Napoleon had been defeated by a vast coalition of enemies in 1814 and forced to abdicate, and was exiled to the isle of elba. The incoming king, Louis the 18th was actually welcomed at first by many of the war weary French. The allies gathered at Vienna to redraw the map of Europe, but internally, France was a mess. Many of the King’s advisors wanted to turn back time to before the revolution, and they also removed many officers from the army, disbanded famous units, and either tried to ignore the glorious achievements of the French armies, or pretended they were themselves responsible. These actions rapidly lost favor for the king.
Over on Elba, Napoleon watched and waited. He saw that old grievances between nations were preventing the Congress of Vienna from achieving a balance in Europe, and that France was restless. In March, 1815, he judged the time was right and came back to France. Unit after unit of the army went over to him, and unbelievably, without losing a man, he led a force to Paris. The King fled, and Napoleon was acclaimed Emperor again.
Napoleon was declared outlaw by the congress, and vast armies were being assembled to invade France. Although he made numerous appeals for peace, Napoleon also assembled an elite striking force, called the Grand Armee, composed of veterans; he reconstituted the Imperial Guard, and built up several smaller armies or corps to defend other areas of France. This army was probably man for man one of his finest, but it also was shaky in terms of morale. Many felt that treason was the reason (wow that rhymes) for Napoleon’s defeat and the soldiers distrusted many of the Marshal’s and Generals. And he made what were in retrospect, many bad appointments. Having the brilliant Davout as minister of War, instead of as one of his wing commanders was bad, but appointing Soult as chief of staff was fatal. Soult had never done this before, and because of his groveling before King Louis, was not trusted by the army. Many officers would not salute him or shake hands with him.
So now we come to it. Napoleon decides to take the offensive, and hold against one army while crushing the other. In a great feat of organization, he concentrates 125,000 men and 300+ cannon, and invades Belgium while the Prussians and British were dispersed. He sends Ney with 2 corps to drive the British away from the key crossroads at Quatre Bras, while concentrating the rest of his troops at Ligny, where he defeats Blucher in a bloody battle. However, instead of falling back on Namur and their supply lines, Blucher insists that the army retreat to Wavre, to keep in touch with the British left wing so they may aid Wellington. Gneisenau, Blucher’s chief of staff is worried that the Prussian force will be crushed if Wellington retreats to Antwerp or wont stand against the French, but he complies.
In a hard fought battle with many missed opportunities, Ney and Wellington fight to a standstill. When Wellington hears that Blucher has been pushed back, he gives the order to retreat to Mont St. Jean. “I suppose in England they will say we were beaten, but it cant be helped,” he says.
The retreat continues through the 16th. Wellington takes up his positions at Waterloo, but the 17th is a night of torrential rain, and no battle can take place. Meanwhile, Marshal Grouchy, detached by Napoleon with 30000 men and 100 cannon, is following the Prussian main body (or so he thinks) but slowly, and is no longer between the Prussians and Napoleons right wing.
On the 18th, the battle begins. Here are dispositions of both armies.
The key points in the battle are Hougoumont, defended by the light companies of the British guards, and La Haye Saint, defended by Major Baring and the riflemen of the Kings German Legion, as well as Wellingtons center. Later, the town of Planchenoit on Napoleon’s right will become a key to the battle. The space between the armies is sodden, crop laden , muddy farmland, forming something of a valley between Wellington’s ridgeline, and Napoleon on the heights of Rosomme.
Next: Episode I, Houguemont, the Advance of the 1st Corps of the French Army, and the Deathride of the British Household and Union heavy Cavalry Brigades.

Re: Thursday President's Pancake Breakfast and Coffee
Well that was fast. I just got our Northwest T-shirts. Many thanks Ms. Del. ^^
I'm currently half-way through disassembling my bed frame but I'll be back as soon as I'm done to read through Mr. Gombur's no doubt excellent edjumacations.
Re: Thursday President's Pancake Breakfast and Coffee
Conversation with Doc's (my doctor here) assistant on the phone today. "Doctor will see you tomorrow morning and change your return to work date to Monday or later. It depends on how far along the rash has progressed."
She chuckled
You see, he told me so but I argued with him that I really wanted to try to get at least one day in this week regardless...
Anyway, I feel somewhat better, still need pain relievers as the rash feels a bit like a severe sunburn. The muscle doesn't spasm as much. That's really good.
Thank you for the edumacation Doc (Landy's Doc) . You explain things really well.
Looks like things are really moving for the movers. New chapters for a lot of people. I'm optimistic that things are really going to work out for the good for everyone.
Well, I have been doing very little this week. Taking care of the furballs and that's about it. Tonight I am going to make some spaghetti. I think spouse is relieved as he has been doing his best to make dinner every night and clean up after. Not as easy as it looks.

That was a pretty good read and I appreciate the map. I'm not well-versed in that history and so it helps to visualize. Are you sure you shouldn't be a history teacher somewhere?? I think you'd make a great teacher (as long as you don't bring your axe).

I haven't been in all the threads so I'm not sure what happened, but glad you're feeling better. I give you permission to have an extra cookie.
