I'm wondering if a box will be available, or if RoR is going to be download only. I like having a physical disc for backup purposes, but (assuming all of my lag issues get resolved and I can play LotRO again) don't want to miss pre-order bonuses waiting for a box if there isn't going to be one. I don't remember one being available for RoI. I suppose it's "greener" to do download only, but I really like my MoM collector's edition box set; I sure would like to see more expansions like that! That box set made the MoM expansion seem really special; it's still my favorite.
It will be download only. If you want a box copy of the game the most current box copy would be the Mithril Edition that you can get at Gamestop. But you would still need to download any updates, RoR when is comes out, since that has been out for awhile. http://www.gamestop.com/pc/games/the...-edition/97978

There are currently no plans to offer a boxed edition of Riders of Rohan.

A related question:
Can anyone tell me how big the RoR download is? I have a monthly download cap with my isp so need to adjust my usage accordingly before I buy it.

Not at this time. When Rohan launches, your game client will patch automatically. ALl clients, regardless of whether you have purchased the expansion pack or not, will update equally. Rohan is currently slated to relesae on September 5.

There isn't a download. On Sept. 5th, the servers will be taken down and patched. When they go back up RoR will be live. Whether or not you're able to access the Rohan quests will be determined by a flag on your account that tells the game if you own Rohan.

There WILL be a download.
Don't forget our current clients do NOT have the contents of Rohan Expansion.
Even as a F2P'er you will still have something to download.
All the files we currently have will be updated and patched on OUR end as well as Server-side.
What the poster was asking is
How big is this patch going to be?
Because some people have a limit on how much they can download each month (set by their ISP's)
At the moment all we can say is
We have no idea how big of a patch it is going to be.

If by "download", you mean strictly a file to download separately from the normal patching process, there might be. We've had pre-patch downloads for expansions before. RoI didn't have one, but only Turbine can say whether RoR will or not. As to the more general meaning of "download", not even Turbine can say how big the final patch for RoR will be, since it's still in alpha testing right now.

Major expansions always make changes to large portions of the game, so in a sense, yes, you might actually be re-downloading old parts in there too.

i would be glad of that....what with the way the d/l only versions are priced like boxed versions of old, imagine if you will that price increase for a retail box in a brick-n-motar store.

I believe that Turbine have stated multiple times that they have moved away from "pre-patch" downloads as they caused more support issues than they were worth. I would work on the assumption that RoR will be made available through the launcher in exactly the same way as any other patch/update/etc, and it will be unavoidable, whether you purchase it or not.
I like having a physical disc for backup purposes...
You can always just copy your game directory to a Flash drive, or burn it to a disc yourself, once its downloaded and installed...
Regardless, any physical disc - be it self-made or shipped from Turbine - is quickly going to become out of date due to updates and hotfixes. Restoring the game with a backup is always going to require a good chunk of re-downloading to be playable, anyway.
- Nuclear Power is illegal where i live. if the server i am downloading from is drawing power form a Nuclear source, is it really better, in the long run? sure, it might be "greener" than coal, but is that better?
- yes, no manuals are printed... but its not like paper comes from Old Growth, 2000 yr old Redwoods... or from teh Rainforests of South America. Paper comes from a farm. just like corn. corn is considered "green." but paper isnt?
reminds me of the "organic" stuff we sell in the produce industry. marketing to tug on those heart-strings. yes, im a cynic....
...wasnt the lack of printed manuals and boxes spposed to lower the cost and therefore, lower prices?
