Re: Not REALLY free to play? *Expansion questions?*
yep
technically you can earn enough TP ingame to buy them without spending real money, but it's not feasible
hope you weren't expecting anything other than the industry standard definition of "free to play"A spaceship from another star / They ask me where all the people are
I tell them I'm the only one / There was a war, but I must have won

Re: Not REALLY free to play? *Expansion questions?*
Surely you didn't think that Turbine was going to create a game of this size and scope and just give it away for free, did you?
Large portions of the game are free. The expansions are not free. Certain items and abilities that make life easier in this game are not free. Only 4 of the roughly 18 zones in the game are free (you can travel through all zones and kill mobs, but you cannot do quests in zones that you do not own).
However, you can earn Turbine Points in the game by completing deeds, which can then be used to "buy" things from the store, such as new zones.

Re: Not REALLY free to play? *Expansion questions?*
Hi
Yes it can be. I run a F2P account, and by judicious use of the Turbine points I collect from deeds etc, I can play for free. In fact I used the current 30% off to buy the Moria expansion pack (not the quest pack). I haven't spent a cent on this account. It took some doing, and I had been waiting for the 30% off special which comes every few months.
I used both toons to earn TP (use the mmorsel TP finder its a great aid). I bought expansions when they were 50% off, and tried to make sure I would earn more TP than I spent. The only other thing I bought was the riding skill (again at 50% off).
I have even earnt TP for regions I dont have, by gaining rep by handing in task items. Now I have bought the expansion I might buy a few of those 'luxuries' as moria gave me two more slots, so i can have 4 toons collecting TP. I would also recommend entering all the lotteries.

Re: Not REALLY free to play? *Expansion questions?*
you buy expansion packs with turbine points which you can earn by doing deeds in the game. If you want to know which deeds give you turbine points I suggest using http://lotro.mmorsel.com/p/tpfinder.html this website gives you a list of deeds that you can do in the free to play area and is very helpful. You will definitely need more than one character to pull it off I suggest using up to at least five characters other wise as you buy the quest packs you will lose turbine points instead of gaining. So if you want to play on only one server you should work to buy the character slots first and look to buy this stuff when there's a sale in the lotro store. And to increase your chance of going all the way I suggest to buy turbine points I think you can buy about 600 turbine points for $7.It gives you premium status which starts you with 3 character slots instead of 2 and allows you to mail money which you can't as a free to play and gold cap is lifted to 5 gold instead of 2 and other details.
well I hope this helps.Last edited by Thrannok; Jun 12 2012 at 08:39 PM.

Re: Not REALLY free to play? *Expansion questions?*
People talk about "buying" quest packs and expansions, as well as lots of other features, but that doesn't mean you have to spend real money on them. Spending real money is certainly one of the options, and Turbine tries to encourage that method by making it by far the most convenient (as well as throwing in a few bonus fluff items for the cash versions of the expansions), but they've also made it possible to earn an unlimited amount of Turbine Points within the game itself. There are lots of players who play completely free and earn enough in-game to buy a significant amount of game content - enough to level up with. There are even some who play completely free and earn enough points to buy all the content (though that takes a lot of grinding).

Re: Not REALLY free to play? *Expansion questions?*
So to earn the Turbine gold, you can do repeat quests? Dailys or what..?
Or does it max out at some limit, if you want to play completely free...

Re: Not REALLY free to play? *Expansion questions?*
to earn turbine points (TP) the currency used by the ingame store you need to grind deeds. these are usualy complete x number of quests, discovering locations, killing x number of mobs, using certain skills x number of times.
each region has its own deeds, the kill deeds for each region only become unlocked once you kill the first type of the specific mob. but you can only complete deeds in regions for which you own the quest pack for.
to find out which deeds you currently have available check your deeds book
thats the good part there is no upper limit or at least nobodys found it yet... and its relitively easyOr does it max out at some limit, if you want to play completely free...
TP are account wide so you can roll and re-roll your toons as many times and on as many servers as you wish to obtain enough TP to purchase what ever you require
this guide should give you a rough idea of howmany TP you can earn from the free content, which should be more than enough to buy your first quest pack

Re: Not REALLY free to play? *Expansion questions?*
What is the difference between expansions and quest-packs?

Re: Not REALLY free to play? *Expansion questions?*
Think of an expansion like a bundle. Expansions get you more than just the quest content for that zone. For example, the Moria quest pack gets you only the quests in Moria. The Moria expansion gets you the quest content, Runekeeper and Warden Classes, and extra character slots.
For Isengard, the quest pack just gets you the quests in Dunland. The expansion gets you those plus the Draigoch raid and instances. (And if you buy the expansion with real money as opposed to in the store, some versions of it come with bonus quest packs.)
You can buy everything included in an expansion separately if you like (like if you don't think you'll ever raid or ever do instances, you could just buy the Isengard quests), but if you think you're going to use all the content, it's a better deal to buy the expansion.

Re: Not REALLY free to play? *Expansion questions?*
This is the most useful way to think about expansions if you are not VIP.
If you ARE VIP, you need to keep track of which quest packs are part of expansions. As part of their subscription, VIPs get access only to NON-expansion zones. Everyone, even VIPs, need to buy expansion zones in some way... either with TPs or with RL money.
Currently you can only buy Rohan content with RL money. Once the Rohan expansion is released (September 5 is currently the date), you will be able to buy Rohan in an expansion and as a separate quest pack with Turbine Points.

So LOTRO can be free forever?
As I read all this comment, does it really mean u can play it forever without paying for it?
-

Yes, there are a few players who have not paid a cent and have access to everything they want. It just involves grinding Turbin Points to purchase new items when they are available.

yes. There is NO time limit.
As others stated, you can earn TP by completing deeds and use that TP to buy more zones and so on to actually earn you the entire game.
It can take a lot of grinding to do it completely free, but it is certainly possible.
in this case grinding could mean making several characters and fulfilling the deeds available for those characters in order to earn TP to purchase more character slots or additional zones to advance.
You automatically (free, no TP required) have every zone available to you to travel in. You are able to do every quest in the main story line (the Epic volumes quest line). You are able to kill mobs and gain xp and level in that manner.
Unless you purchase with TP or real money, you are not able to do regular zone quests, raids, and skirmishes in areas other than the first 4. Also as a f2p account, you have a few other restrictions, including amount of gold you can have on a character, bag space, number of characters, auction house use limits etc. (the full restrictions are listed online)
You CAN play free. There is no time limit. (no 7-day trial like is common elsewhere)----------| | | Whitestar Rangers | | |-------------------------| | | Four Horse men of the aPUGalypse | | |

yes, that's what I'm almost doing I only bought 1 time a very few TP, to get the premium functions. (+1 character slot, 5 AH slots, gold cap increase, ...)
But you need to make toons and get as many TP from deeds (and do it over and over)
I just pick a class that I haven't played yet (so it isn't always the same)
And then I finish (almost) all the deeds until I also complete lone lands.
Then I send all the good stuff to my main character, and start over with a new character.
Optional: if you also need much marks, you can do skirmsishes until you also complete these deeds (500 marks/deed)
Some people only plays the starter zone, but what I'm doing is actually playing and having fun.
see this site for more info about were to get your free TP http://lotro.mmorsel.com/p/tpfinder.html
Now I have enough TP for the moria expension pack. But you better wait until there is a good sale (30% or more) To save time. And choose wisely with what you want to buy.
Cause I don't think you will get that many TP to buy everything.
another note: you can't get pre-purchase with packets, so you need to wait until rohan is actually in-game ...
I know "yes" was enough as answer, but maybe it's usefull for you and other people
EDIT: my way to get TP(and probably also from others) is also good if you don't know what your next class will be. Cause you actually learn to play with every class. But remind that there are faster ways to get TP, but this is the one were I have most fun (and that's the meaning of a game, isn't it?)Last edited by Kevin3706; Jun 20 2012 at 06:13 AM.
