    Two Maintenances in 1 week

Oh calamity, oh dismay, what shall I do? I can't clean the garage out again (I did that on Monday), the Gollum in me asks why they couldn't do it on Monday when the servers were already ,y'know, offline, the Smeagol in me says they had to do maintenance on the servers before they could do a patch on the servers.

Doing maintenance and update on the same day is a big no no in the computer world. If something breaks the maintenace team would blame the update team and the update team would blame the maintenance team. Its so much easier to find and fix bugs when maintenace and updates are done on differerent days.

Re: Two Maintenances in 1 week

well monday was just regular maintenance, to keep the servers running good order, no changes to the game at all.

the down time for tomorrow is to fix issues in the game specifically to address the mount hitching and lag spikes and a couple quests that were not working incorrectly.

I suspect if this fix was ready on Monday they might have pushed it through with the regular maintenance but it probably wasn't there for we get it tomorrow, but that is just my theory

Yeah, the double downtime this week (triple if you count the forums) really rubs me the wrong way. On the other hand, if this patch fixes the bugs that it is intended to fix (lag spikes, travel routes, and a key epic quest that couldn't be started) then I'll look the other way for a change. These are important fixes that the community has been clamoring about for quite some time.

This is exactly why the decision was made to do them now, rather than wait until next month.

Not sure which part of the world you live in, so this may not apply to you, but in the Northern Hemisphere, around this time, well, the last month or so, and for the next couple months, there's this weird thing called The Sun that comes out and heats up everything, almost to the point where it's okay to leave the computer chair and go outside.

I really enjoyed Hell - it was the only level I liked. Inferno is just infuriating. (at this point, they also cleverly made the change that thrusts you into General Chat *every time you log in* and that means, 'Oh, look, ALL CAPS gold spam.' You can leave General... and be right back next time you log in.) I didn't like that the mobs have random spells. I like to learn my mobs, not have wasps spitting fire one time, & then bubbling & shooting out pink rays of whatever the next. I did feel a 'woot' moment when I beat the major bosses on hell, though. And my boy wizard was kind of funny. (I detested the female wizard.)

Due to school, I was just finishing Nightmare when they added that in. Nightmare felt right to me, a nice balance between relaxing yet challenging. Hell took the first step into annoying artificial difficulty and I just quit right there. At first hell seemed fine and was kind of fun... And then I ran into invulnerable and I just said, "Nope." That type of difficulty isn't fun to me. Coincidentally, that is also when I started ramping up the development hours on a text based RPG I've been working on =P

I thought nightmare & the first one (normal/whatever) were kind of redundant, but yes, nightmare was more fun. To get through hell, I really had to use the auction house, and that didn't please me. I did find it challenging & possible, but it DOES feel contrived. (contrived to get you dependent on their AH, and ready to think a bit of real money is a bargain compared to a sword supposedly worth 3.5 million gold)

Just the mention of a text-based RPG warms my heart. Good luck with it!

AW: Two Maintenances in 1 week

Just hope that this upcoming patch doesn't get lost when the next regular update comes out. Unfortunately, this happened with quite some intermediate fixes during the last months...

Hint @Turbine: Integrate the changes in into the tip revision of your sources NOW !

Thank you! =) It's actually quite fun to work on... Though I've been told that it's impossible to progress past the first boss So I've got a ways to go with it before it even enters a beta stage =P

TBH, I found normal really fun during act 1, just due to the fact that the gritty dark atmosphere felt so much like the Diablo I remembered... And then I got past the first part of act 1 and it just became easy and dull. Nightmare was a breathe of fresh air, and it was always fun to pop onto the AH occasionally when I had the money and shop for a nice bow (I played a Demon Hunter). I even was able to figure out a way to farm Belial (sp?) easily and from the videos that I watched from Hell, my strategy would wok there also. Unfortunately I called quits before I was able to test that out... The fact that I play games in a constant state of being broke, it was hard to find items once I got into Hell (came into it a couple levels over level... parts of Act 3 are really fun to repeat), off the AH of course - everything that dropped in game was 20 levels below level, that was within my budget and actually improved my performance enough to alleviate some of the headaches the game was giving me...

Any way, I'm going to go to bed. It was nice being able to rant about Hell in Diablo 3 =P Thanks again for the good luck with the text based game (btw, this is a shameless plug but ah well, asku.codeplex.com to check it out. It's in alpha v 2.1 right now, so don't expect much).

Next time, try considering bug fixes AND maintenance in one round, rather than 2 times in one week? This is very silly IMO... Oh and btw: put the downtimes in the client launcher please.... I had to learn about the new DT from another player ingame yesterday, while my launcher still had the DT from Monday listed... Come on guys, are you sleeping over there or what?? Keep up to date!

About 5 years ago Turbine did this once with LOTRO and the game was down all day. Patience posted on the forums that Turbine would never do that again, and with good reason.

It would nice if Turbine would consider in future the option on doing it (think 1 patch/maintenance....this week is an exception) on Thurs, aka Raid lock reset night. Most people do not have planned activities, which Wed as the night before usually has a final Saruman attempt*.

*or insert you choice of boss pre lock reset.

    Just something to consider turbine.

Yep, we should make sure that they ALL bug. It's just not acceptable that we still have working quests

Well, I have my hopes up that some important stuff gets fixed. I don'T mind having 2 downtimes, I am at work anyway at that time.

Unfortunately for me, that 'no big deal' four hours is my whole play time tonight.

I'm fairly sure that something like this would've been known at least a little in advance, so a bit more warning would've been nice. So now by the time I've sorted everything out and got the kids off to bed ... I get no play tonight.

It is all done by the same guy. He stops some services, uploads a patch and runs it, then goes to smoke a ### (a cigarette to our American friends), browses p0rn covertly for 6 hours, and finally starts the services again, as he reminisces how important and fulfilling he thought his job would be when he graduated, but at least this pays the bills.

Bit pieved frankly, my game time is sparse and had set aside today to get some in and being on UK time I am not happily still sleeping at 11am..... why oh why does a patch as tiny as this require 4 hours of downtime?

Well the patch is already available for download, but I can't login yet. I'd imagine it will be up well before the 4 hours expires though.

WHAT! go outside? are you insane?, the field next to us is filled with Aurochs that want to eat my face off! I'm not going outside for gods sake!

If I remember correctly, Turbine tried to do maintenance and a patch on the same day before, but the chinchillas were quite upset that they brought hamsters in to do the extra work instead of giving the Chinchilla United workers overtime. The resulting work stoppage was unpleasant and the CU extracted a promise from management to never do it again.
