Hey, most of us Hordies weren't too impressed with where the story went with Cata, either - that's when I bailed as well.
If you always played Alliance, you probably never got a chance to fully see why Garrosh Hellscream got banished to Northrend and how he behaved there. Then they make him our leader?
I could go on, but yeah - I played from the old Warcraft days, went Horde, never could get into the Alliance story side in WoW for some reason.
But they dun wrecked it for us, too! Though Cata was just wrong in so many ways....
My main in WoW was a Blood Elf rogue, so I fully understand where you're coming from with the Garrosh rage. And now I find out that he's going to be the final boss in the Panda expansion. It's really got me questioning my MMO's right now, because I want nothing more than to smash his pixelated face, but... then I remember the gearheads and think I'm probably better off staying out of WoW for a while longer.

I know the storyline of Horde mainly from books and wiki. And yes, I can find some faults even on the Horde-side.
Blizzard is basically teaching us that the only good leader of the Horde that hasn't caused destruction is the one that has been raised by humans. Great lesson! Every. other. single. warchief. that. has. been. born. on. the. orcish. world. has. failed. Blackhand, Nerzhul, Orgrim, now Garrosh... every single orc leader seems to be vulnerable to corruption.
Now, in Mists of Pandaria you will get rid of Garrosh, and the only thing the Alliance will do is to help your faction to dethrone him and to bring your Green Jesus back
It's neat and reassuring to see others felt the same way about the Warcraft story. I played both sides almost equally (though I raided only on horde, where I had a boy elf tank. I have a boy elf tank champion here - so I didn't change all that much, in the end. Gnome rogue - hobbit burglar. it works!) I played in the Cata beta, but something about the story just depressed me.
Personally, I thought Thrall was the best, most innately, Joseph Campbell-approved hero of the game. I could find no plausible reason that my elf would hang around to serve someone as unpleasant as Garrosh. I also didn't like their snap turns with major characters. "I was a saintly figure, did everything for my people!" "Hey, now I'm evil!" The final straw was that little gnome you rescue from Arcatraz - when they made him evil, I just quit. Weird how a little thing (literally & figuratively) will finally finish you off!
I did try their Panda Beta. I don't know - it seems so cartoonish now. And they're pandas. It shouldn't bother me after cows & all, but... pandas. I might check it out. I really did love my Gnome - she was so me. (if I were small)
I will go off-topic, but hopefully we can avoid that flame war
But overall, I've always enjoyed reading star wars books about the Old Republic era or the Clone Wars or etc. They aren't anywhere near the literary quality of the LOTR trilogy of course, but the characters and content are still entertaining.
And with the "thousands", thats entirely true. Timothy Zaun himself has written 15 full length books. And that's all about a 100 year period.
Yes, there are many books written making up the "Expanded Universe" that is Star Wars. Most of them are likely better than the garbage Lucas spewed out for the prequel trilogy. (How could they not be?)
But they're still mass market, trade paperbacks. Marketed to primarily teens (and die hard Star Wars fans).
Tolkien, on the other hand, may have "only" written four books (not counting the ones edited by his son and published after he had sailed into the West) but those "mere" four volumes have been translated into dozens of languages and have been published in almost every country that has any literate population at all.
Fifty some odd years after publication, they are *still* some of the most read and most beloved works on the planet. How many Star Wars books can even hope to be in print twenty years from now?
There is *no* comparison between the two.

While I agree Blizzard makes questionable decisions with their lore, I find it amusing how often the complaints about their story come from people who are complaining about their misunderstandings or ignorance of the story. People who complain goblin/gnome technology is too high-tech for a fantasy environment and Blizzard is dumb for adding it in, for instance, when gnomes and goblins have had copters and rockets and so on since Warcraft 2.
They didn't make the gnome evil. You rescued him from a prison. He was in there for a reason. He was a bad guy already.

Sorry to be so terribly ignorant, then. It bothered me because I liked him. Is that okay with you? If not... too bad.
I have no clue if this has anything to do with the influx of WoW players but I've noticed a rise in mean posts here in the forums.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, totally worn out & proclaiming "WOW, what a ride!"

Lad, most of people who complain about too many steampunk elements ingame (including me) is not because they're annoyed by their presence, but because this supports lazy writing. For example - Theramore being destroyed by a huge bomb dropped by a single (SINGLE) zeppelin is a lorelol moment.
That's probably more to do with the new expansion coming up. A lot of people seem to be really miffed about it.
you mean people are not pleased with Mysts of Kong-fu Panda? color me shocked.
Where now is the lolcat and the derailer? Where is the troll that was trolling?
Where is the URL and the youtube, and the snappy retort flowing?
Where is the hand on the keyboard, and the LCD screen glowing?
They have passed like rain on the thread, like a wind in the post;
The days have gone down in the forums behind the cookys into shadow.
Who shall gather the smoke of the nubs not searching,
Or behold the flowing derails from the Sea returning?
/cue slavering from the fanboys claiming LOTRO players are never bored at end-game when there's only one raid 'on level'.
Way to flamebait there bub.
OT: Can't say I've noticed an increase of Wow-players, of course it's not like they carry signs around identifying them. Seems possible though, adding LOTRO to Steam is a pretty big deal in terms of advertising.
They are all over! With my server being default and lotro being on steam its insane. I guess they are all bored and waiting for their pandas, but I find it funny how all the regional chats are people talking about WoW. Anyone else notice this?
PS: I don't have anything against them, I just find it funny, it seems all 10 million of them are trying out lotro :P
I can tell we have alot of WoW players did Foundry T2 the other day newish tank doing it, and these 2 guys are like Why is it taking so long whats the problem whats going on why are we taking so long........ the older player were abit more supportive giving advice and so on. god please save us from these people.
Btw they are both ex WoW players i did ask them if they were new to the game.

You got lucky. They actually showed patience for WoW people. In WoW they would have simply started pulling for the tank if they thought things were too slow.
The upside the group finder tool might get more use as WoW folks are used to using a similar thing. The downside is the rush rush rush me first mentality.
Oh my goodness! Look ma! Another, "Hur dur WoW player invasion thread". I played World of Warcraft, Everquest, Everquest II, FFXI Online, Ultima Online, FFXIV Online, and pretty much every mainstream MMORPG title you can think of. How does one discriminate against one such as I? I understand the nature of this thread is to disparage the people who are doing things you consider rude or unfair and you assume they're new, why not ask them to join a party so you can group up and do the tasks that which you feel are being rudely hogged together? Or....*gasp*...offer them advice and HELP THEM?
Then again, if you go ahead and claim they're dirty WoW players, it would be in their best interest to continue whatever it is you're annoyed with because you're being a jerk to them. SERIOUSLY, why don't you simply welcome them to the game and be supportive as the people in sensyi's experience were? This is counterproductive and I'm embarrassed as a member of this community by the very existence of this wretched thread.

PLAY NICE, KIDS.
You know what I am an ex WoW player, and ex player for TSO, SL, ATiTD and a host of others.
When I meet someone new I DO try to help how I can. Which isn't much since I am fairly new myself but I try.
None of that changes my fear that instead of WoW players adapting to the community of LotRO that they will instead force the LotRO community to adapt to them. If we get enough of them fast enough that we can't help them adjust fast enough that is exactly what will happen.
So Please keep your scolding, condescending attitude to yourself. You are not my mother.
Well let me share a little secret.... I played WoW too, and Aion, SWTOR and....
I always come back to Lotro though. They are like a beachhouse I go and visit, this is home.
So I welcome the WoW (SWTOR, Aion etc...) crowds, the more the merrier as long as they aren't disruptive or disrespectful.
It means the low level areas will have new players. This makes it easier to raise an alt through instances and a chance to visit the revamped areas, try a new class or sell all that low level crafting stuff that has been clogging your inventory.
Not forgetting....you might actually make new friends.
WoW invasion? Nah, I see it as tourist season and we are the new Bahamas
If WoW players can sometimes come across as different from long time LotROers, it's possibly because WoW emphasises group-based content whereas in LotRO you can be forgiven for not noticing that raid instances even exist, such a negligible part do they play in the overall game and so immersive is the world environment. Because of this, LotRO is a much more solo-friendly experience.
What this means in practice is that WoWers tend to be very competitive or very good team players. Often both. I suspect it's the ones who lack cooperative abilities and who are only interested in shiny things who get noticed more.

You yanked the words right out of my mouth, well done!
Seriously, though, there's a vast difference between welcoming new players, giving them some basic bits of advice when possible, and standing by while self-entitled gearheads (from ANY MMO, not necessarily just WoW, although I noticed the trend most heavily there) try to rush through dungeon experiences, grab all the gear and loot they can, and act as if they're entitled to it because they're <insert class expert here>.
I have no problems with new players who ask questions and are willing to learn. I DO have problems with spoiled brats, both in real life and in my games. The difference is, in my games, firstly, I can choose servers where they are less likely to be found (which is why my husband and I both play on an EU server even though we're both from the U.S.) and secondly, I can put those people on my ignore list and pretend they aren't there.
Oh, and on the likely premise that no one's going back to read the first couple of pages, I'm a seven year WoW-veteran/refugee. I started in vanilla, and over the years watched what was initially a great game turn into a gearhead's paradise, with little or nothing to do if you play mostly solo or with a partner.
Edit: And polishedglass, if you were truly embarrassed by the existence of this thread, you'd have left it without posting, as I do when I find a topic either not worth my time or merely insulting.
I dont have anything against current or ex Wow players, the mature ones is more then welcomed and the ignore button works wonders on the immature players, (also works great on non Wow players)
"I dont't know half of you half as well as i should like; and i like less than half of you half as well as you deserve."

Lazy writing will be lazy writing. Could've done that just as easily with a big dragon (see Cataclysm for details) or a powerful sorceror or whatever. The method isn't responsible for the result there.
Besides, most of the complaints I saw were about the cars and motorcycles and similar contraptions, not anything to do with tech's effects on plot.

Uh, no, I was talking about the upcoming expansion for this game. Have you not looked around the LotRO forums lately?
There are certainly a number of obnoxious 'never played any game but LoTRO and never will' players on my server - it's not coming from WoW that causes it. None of my old kin came from WoW and when they decided to focus on raiding, the gear/virtue requirements would put some of the most hard-core WoW gearheads to shame. (Just to add to the hypocrisy, I checked the kin leader and his raiding team on mylotro - even they don't meet their standards for T1 raids, the kind of gear you'd probably have if you'd run T2 for months and got very lucky on drops - but that doesn't matter, it's only designed to exclude people anyway.)
You're going to find jerks and nice people in any video game. Just hope you mostly find nice people. It does help that here if somebody makes 20 links to gifs of their porn collection in GLFF or starts with racist/sexist/religious slurs, a GM will step in quickly.
In WoW, while the general customer service is better, you were on your own as far as that kind of garbage went - mostly it came down to finding a good guild - and there were lots of them - while staying out of the public chat channels.
Played WoW since release (left around 2010). Also played Lotro from very early in 2008 (still playing).
Am I an invader? A defender? An MMO addict?
There are a multitude of various personality-types playing every game under the sun. Seen the spectrum in almost every game. Don't get me wrong. Lotro has had far more of a mature, respectful player base across time than many other games, but it's hardly cut and dry.

I hear you Myrric! I played none stop for four years - I well remember reaching level 35 on my first character and thinking "Five more levels and I can get a mount!" Those were the days! *sighs* I still pop back from time to time, I do my rp here and just *play* there. Sometimes it's nice to walk the old streets, even if they are now made into "level-quick" ways...
Games of all sorts come and go, as do players of those games.
I started in EQ. Saw an ad for open beta LotRo and never looked back.
1. I wish to remind everyone of when the game went f2p. remember the huge outburst of nastiness that followed in the newbie area chats? Most of it (yes, most, I will bet that greater than 50% of it) came from current or former players who suddenly found themselves able to cry and moan (replace first word with something you feel is more appropriate); without serious penalty.
2. other games... yeah others come and go and everyone likes to try out something or other. I tried STO, but came back.
---2a. STO. this game is good, but released too soon due to pressure from above. It is NOW what it should have been when released. Constant updates (Seasons) and additional mini-games for you to command your crew to complete, clearly defined weapons classes... very good stuff now. much more what it should have been. Will they recover from the initial disappointment? dunno.
---2b. SWToR. Also a good game. their error was in not following current models and offering 1, lifetime subs, and 2, not F2P. This caused mass rush to level cap then abandon ship to avoid paying more. Yup going to play it myself when my computer upgrade is finished.
---2c. GW2. heard alot about it, people seem to be trumpeting it, but its not out yet. I want to try it too.
yet LotRo will always be home. Specifically one little ole spider sitting in a burrow out in the middle of the Ettenmoors waiting for lunch to happen by, as he has since open beta.
