    Soldier for Hunter

    Greetings,

I scanned the forum and did not find an answer to my query I do apologize if it has been covered before.

I have a Hunter and am looking forward to developing my soldier for skirmishes. My question is whether a Protector or Warrior is better suited for a Hunter. I am sure either choice is usable however I am looking for the better match with my high dps low survivabilty character.

    Any help?

    Thank you

I'm seriously considering forcing my hunter to ask his herbalist hand in marriage.

Only time I do skirmishes is to do the epics and neither of those are any good for those unless they are fully leveled, so Herbalist is about it. Get it with enough health and power/incombat power regen so it can off tank and you can happily burn through most solo skirmishes

I use a protector. Mobs don't live long enough to worry about healing.

I would say protector or herbalist. A warrior can often pull more agro than he can handle and you will find that you will have to keep summoning a new one back in the battle after each fight. A protector is a little squishy at low levels but after a few can easily hold his own against many targets without any issues while you pew pew them down. this can also help in fellowships when the healer agros a mob, you can just have your protector attack that target and pull it off the healer. They have force taunts that will even pull agro of your tank giving them a break to catch up on morale. a worrior would never be able to do this. As for the herbalist, this will also increase your survivability along with your fellowships and they are more preferred when you are running with groups. They can both heal your morale and power and you will not have the trouble of agroing mezzed targets or ones you do not want in combat.

I have a banner-guard, which is roughly equivalent to a captain. I know that's a bit of an odd choice for a hunter, but I've found that he can draw aggro fairly well and also does fairly decent healing. Plus most of his abilities apply to the entire fellowship, which should theoretically make me more popular in groups. But I would say that the "default" skirmish soldier for hunters is the Protector.

I had a protector - he was kind of useless and constantly got lost. I switched to an herbalist and am much happier now..

Protector if you have its skills maxed or near enough, a basic starter protector has no chance of holding agro and surviving agro when it gets it all. You need to get enough marks etc to max out its level and get its main ultimate skills, to do that isn't by using one to get the marks it is with another class.

    Re: Soldier for Hunter

I used to have a protector for all of my chars listed on my sig... I died a bit...
Then I switched to herbalists for all of them... Needless to say, I've never died once and skirms are suddenly faster and more reliable

    For me, Herbalist>everything else
They're also better for grouop skirms too

2 Tips If you use an herbalist:
*Let your herbalist have some aggro
---My herbalist can handle up to 5 lvl 56 mobs on my highest char and still live easily Which makes my job a lot easier
    *Trait for power
---This is a MUST, hunters always have power trouble and this trait fixes that

    Re: Soldier for Hunter

Well, my 75 hunter has a maxed out warrior and I'm not very satisfied with it. It is too squishy and doesn't seem to do much more dmg than some other soldier types. But since I don't die in skirmishes anyway, I don't want to spend marks to train another maxed out soldier.

Some of my 50+ lvl characters have bannerguards, and I'm quite pleased with them. Heavy armour and enough HoT-healing to keep any character alive long enough, I suppose. I've tried herbalists too but they seem to be too stupid sometimes. Keep healing themselves even if they are on full morale and I'm nearly dead, or just freeze in critical situations. Don't know whether or not they have done something to their AI lately. Many people recommend them so I guess they truly are the best choice when fully trained. Meaning, even the lack of AI can keep your morale high enough, long enough.

Thing is that a herbalist IS a protector as well. The protector attacks mobs to gain aggro. The hunter is a single target dps. With the first heal the herbalist casts on you, every other mob that you are not attacking, aggro him. He heals himself while you peel them one after the other from him. Plus he does not only heal you and himself but those annoying npcs that you have to protect as well.

    Hi,

Another vote for the herbalist. Besides the good reasons for solo-skirms already stated by others, it is also good for groups.

A herbalists might also be slightly cheaper on skirm-marks in the low levels. All other soldiers i tested needed to be on your level or above to make a difference but a herbalist can do good (at least a little) even a couple of levels below yours.

And to be honest: How else are you to get the 11 healers together needed to save Elrond's suicidal sons?

This is key. I went with a Protector, and in the early going it was rough because it was so far below level that he had trouble surviving and pulling aggro. Once I got him to my level (including all of his skills, armor use, self-heals, etc) I've had no problems. It's much better than the Warrior that I used to use. I have never tried an Herbalist, and I like the idea of it but I'm leery of it pulling aggro from 5 mobs at once. If I can't drop them fast enough for some reason, will he be able to keep up on the self-heals? If not then I'll end up with all of them on me.

This is where the soldiers skills come into play as well. I have mine traited with full evasion plus the defensive skill that gives block/parry/evade. Gives her nice survivability. I think I can leave her with 2 lvl75 mobs on her for eternity. Anyway, even if she dies, I usually have cleared most of the mobs till she does.

Everyone and their brother has the herbalist. So be unique and take an archer.

Another vote for Herbalists. Good for all types of skirmishes.

On my Healing classes I have a Protector & it used to work well, but some change in the recent past really made them weak & fragile compared to how they used to be.

Also you utterly do not want a protector aggroing some of the LT's into your group area in skirmish Raids.
