I was rather happily enjoying playing this game yesterday.
Yet this morning the game is freezing for some reason. No settings have been changed so I'm not sure what has provoked it.
After the load up screen appears which load character data list etc, the screen remains black. I then have to bring up the task manager which lists the game as not responding. It remains this way not matter how long I wait as well.

if your seeing a black screen at character select this usualy indicates you need to switch to dx9 to play lotro, if this happens when you first create a character you can usualy switch back to dx10\11 after entering the game world for the first time.
however if it happens when you already have characters and have previously entered the game world it means you may be able to only use DX9.. this has a tendency to happen to some intel graphics chips but it may also happen to other older graphics cards\chips
first place id suggest starting is update your graphics drivers. uninstall your current drivers > reboot then run driver sweeper > reboot again then install the latest drivers
this may allow you play lotro with dx10\11 but if the character select screen is still black you need to stick to dx9
I'm having the same issue. Two days ago lotro was running fine. I get to where it should have the character selection screen and the screen remains black.
Update: While I'm not sure yet if it will solve issue (or is just temporary) I decided Verify The Integrity Of Game Files on steam, and it popper up say 8 files where damaged or something like that. The game is currently fixing those files so I'll be able to see if it works in 5 mins.
Second Update: The invalid files as it were, seem to be caused by the error, not the other way around as I found out after trying the game and realising that the error still persists.
