I have tried adding Steam as a non-steam game before and that never works.

oh well it seems no one knows anywhere how to fix this problem, I know 2 people with it as well. Will try some things and post here if i get it working just in-case anyone anywhere gets the same issue.
Have you tried deleting the LOTRO-folder in your Steam-folder, deleting your local-content (through Steam) and then downloading the game purely through Steam?
(Sorry if you mentioned that on an earlier page, haven't read all of them).

If everything fails, you could just run LOTRO in a non-fullscreen mode, and easily alt-tab to your chat conversations.

It's odd that it's not working for you as a non-Steam game. I run it all the time as a non-Steam game and use the overlay, chat, etc. quite a bit.

Are you putting TurbineInvoker.exe as the startup program in Steam?

It's odd that the package containing the horse and XP token show up in your inventory labeled "Mithril Edition bonus items"...

I noticed this too. Another example of someone at Turbine using a previous implementation without making sure all the appropriate changes are made to ensure that it fits the new situation. /bug it in game so that hopefully at some point new users to the Steam package will see the appropriate name.

    What is get is

An error was encountered while processing your request:

This item is currently unavailable in your region.
Well, I live in Russia, and it is strange that I can buy the game and download in the accustomed way but can't do it via Steam. I understand that there may be some agreement between Turbine and the Russian localizer, but why allow me download and play the game in the first place?

That's actually a lot less interesting than you might think. Originally the Steam edition was called the Mithril Edition internally. Due to scheduling issues the Gamestop edition was released first and got tagged Mithril Edition. When it came time to launch on steam we changed the name to avoid confusion (as they are different things), but the item bundle you get in game still had the old name associated with it.

I don't really like steam but I'm glad LOTRO is on it because 4 mb/s download speeds sure beats 500kb/s which is what I was getting through the turbine launcher.

Ah, well that would explain it then! I was under the impression that Mithril Edition was around a bit longer, but I've only been playing for a few months, so what do I know? I ended up purchasing both, when GameStop offered ME for $15, and now the STEAM one. Such a great deal!

In Europe the Mithril Edition was avaiable since November or earlier.

Are you sure about that? When you add it that way, it shows your friends that you're playing a "non-Steam game" so I would think that the total statistics would categorize it the same way.

For me, this will be one of the biggest benefits of switching to the Steam version -- showing more LOTRO players online which will hopefully help give it more visibility and expose more potential players to it.

Is there a "proper" way to do this now that LOTRO is on Steam ?

Or is it the old "non steam game" messy way ?
Well after this whole RoR launch ******** ( insert bad words) I am finally downloading it through Steam and its 10 times faster and so far no errors.

I was wondering, I started playing LOTRO way before it got on Steam and I recently purchased a DLC pack via the Steam store. Unfortunately I can't seem to activate it on my LOTRO account. Is there a way to do this without having to re-download the whole game?

In your games library, there is a CD Key option for the applicable games. I don't have LoTRO or any DLC of it on Steam, but I assume it would have this option so you can take the key and apply it on your Turbine account.

Start the download (you can immediately cancel it) and then right-click and View CD Key.

You may also need to enter BIG PICTURE MODE to get the view CD key option to display.
