    I know I'm a newbie.... But

Maybe someone can help me understand some of the caps in this game. Not really a total newbie to playing a guard. Just 'in this game' I have not bothered figuring out the caps.

A thing that puzzles me is under Mitigations there are two main categories. Damage Source, and Damage Type. Under Damage source I have Melee, Ranged, Tactical. All show '0' and when moused over say Melee Defense against level 75 Enemies: -- Incoming melee damage is reduced by 0.0% This makes no sense to me. So I guess this set of stats is useless.

So ok, on to the other main sub heading. Damage Type

    I have 2 headings, Physical (13,785) and Tactical (13,429).
I mouse over the number adjacent to Physical and I get a pop up box with the following:
    Physical Mitigation:
--Reduces the damage taken from Physical attacks

    Against Level 75 Enemies:
--Reduces incoming Physical Damage by 62.7%

    Common Mitigation -- Points 20360--:
--Reduces the Damage Taken from Common attacks by 70.0%

Now this last seems to be capped. I take off a bow that adds no armor, no vit - just 1135 Physical Mitigation and this 70% remains unchanged. But the upper number changes. It drops to 60.3%

I have a cappy group and hit his IDoM and again the bottom number 70% remains unchanged but the upper one goes up to 63.3%

So when people talk about being 'capped' they are talking this 70%. What exactly is this other number that fluctuates? Does this number also cap at 70% and do people cap it as well?

I pop a scroll and get his upper number to 65.2%. The lower one stays at 70%. So clearly I have reached a point of diminishing returns. So should I forget about the upper number and as long as I hit the 70% number with cappy buffs replace some virtues or relics with other benefits then physical mitigation. Or keep working on mit's until this upper number caps??

What exactly is the difference between the two.

If I'm capped on physical mit should I swap out Innocence for Loyalty for the extra vit-moral?

Finally the tool tip seems to imply these numbers are relative to level 75 mobs. Do I not need be above cap for level 75 mobs in order to be capped against boss mobs?

At 70% common mitigation, you're capped for everything important for physical mitigation. Mobs are going to attack you with either common damage or tactical damage. What the other number represents is non-common physical damage (ie beleriand, westernesse etc) aka damage that you will receive only in spars from other players. You can dump a bit of physical mitigation from somewhere, the cap is around 11000, no need to go over it unless you're looking for some sort of edge in a spar.

I'm zero PvP. No interest in it. Never sparred never well.

So you are saying I can and even should drop this number under Mitigations - Damage Type - Physical to 11000.

Depends on what kind of content you plan on playing. End-game raid bosses are several levels above the cap. As the tooltip mentions your percentage is calculated against on-level mobs. So if you're just barely 70% against on-level mobs you'll be <70% against an end-game raid boss. If the boss does lots of common damage you might want to remain/get overcapped on common mits.

Ya, if your adding physical from sources that could be used for more useful things (tact mit, b/p/e, morale) yo should dump it for something useful. I sit at about 10500 physical mit unbuffed which is a good sweet spot because scrolls will easily push that to cap. Tact mitigation is a little bit more difficult to come by, but more useful for endgame content. If you shoot for about 15000 unbuffed you should be close to capped when raid buffed.

Just to add, the non-common portion of physical mitigation isn't even relevant for PvMP, it's only relevant when sparring another freep. General advice would be to just ignore it due to the extremely minute relevance, and that's definitely advice that I agree with.
