Will LOTRO work with Windows 8?

Windows 8 looks like it'll be on the horizon sometime before RoR comes along.

I am thinking about switching back to Windows from Mac OS X. Yes, I have regained my sanity. I thought the release of Windows 8 would be the reason to jump back.

Does anyone know if LOTRO will be Windows 8 compatible?

Not only LOTRO, this question is asked about a lot of games. Isn't Windows 8 supposed to be touch screen? If so, I hope the mouse is still an option. I'd hate to have my hand raised for a couple of hours while playing.

It worked just fine for me on the x64 Developer's Preview.

I looked at it today, it's a very weird interface. But you can go back to the normal desktop, although no start menu or nice way to find applications.

So it's a quandary, Windows 8 oddities, or MacOS Lion oddities. If only we could stick with Windows XP/7 or Snow Leopard forever...

7 is pretty much the only Windows OS I've really liked. The others just seemed too cluttered with little toys. And that is the inpression I have with 8.

The Windows 8 Metro interface is, perhaps, great for tablets and smart phones. it may be OK for touchscreen-equipped PCs. For anything without a touchscreen it makes no sense at all. The huge panels on the "start" screen make it look like those "computers" you get in toy shops for very small children.

And if the eay you use your computer involves having multi-tasking to any extent, with multiple appliaction windows open, you are probably going to hate it. I just can't see anyone who uses a desktop/laptop for business going anywhere near it.

Yes, you can drop down to the "old-fashioned" desktop, but with no start button, you keep getting dragged back to Metro as your application launcher. I don't know what the person who thought up this strategy was on, but it must be a pretty powerful reality distorter.

Only in Windows 8 it is cluttered with big toys!

There is a wonderful irony that with Windows 7 Microsoft finally got most things prety much right. Then they noticed the advent of tablet computing, (which they had tried to push years ago with the pretty abysmal Windows Tablet Edition), and apparently panicked. They finally realized that they needed to design a different interface for tablets, and if you look past the ghastly graphic design they may have done a pretty fair job on this. However, then deciding that it ought to be the primary interface for all systems, may well prove to be an act of extraordinary folly. They are even imposing it on the Server version of Windows, which is a seriously weird decision.

Re: Will LOTRO work with Windows 8?

my operating system purchases have been like this:

    Windows 3.1
    Windows 95
    Windows XP
    Windows 7

Microsoft released many versions in between those, but for the most part they all seemed superfluous, and plagued with problems. I anticipate the same will be true for one a two releases. Probably Windows 9 or 10 will be the next good one.

Re: Will LOTRO work with Windows 8?

Back to the original question - LotRO works quite well in Windows 8, both Consumer Preview and Release Preview. You will need to install .NET Framework 1.1 and SP1 but that is not a big problem. So far it runs faster and cleaner than in Win7 but that may be due to it being a new OS install with less registry clutter and the like.

It will come with most new PCs, but Windows 7 will be supported until 2020 and licenses from old computers/bought before Win8 came out can be used.

By 2020, they will hopefully have scrapped the touchscreen ... misdevelopment and made something people can work with again.
I for one can't see a company using this, and what I've seen so far (only two programs at a time) would make my work with Windows 8 simply impossible.

as far as touch screen goes. i won't be buying anything that makes me do that. having to reach forward and up to touch my monitor is absurd. also, i like a clean screen. touching it would create endless fingerprints.

Red face Re: Will LOTRO work with Windows 8?

    Hi,

The short answer about LOTRO working on windows 8 is "yes"!

Longer answer would involve me confirming what others have written about LOTRO working on test or evaluation editions of windows 8 - again "yes".

The longest answer would be a description of why I think windows 8 is a folly, unsuitable for some users, badly designed as far as desktop users are concerned, a money sink or costly adventure, ugly looking, a desperate attempt by its makers to cash in on the tablet market even though a large part of the current windows user base is screaming at those makers how bad they think windows 8 is (in their opinions) and the answer would probably include the pointing out of the fact that, in general, people do not like change!

Seriously though, use windows 7 or look at how earlier versions of windows seem to be better for gaming (search engines are your friends on that one).

All things said though, wait till windows 8 has had some time to show its light and users (windows 8) have had time to properly assess and comment on the full release of the OS - then we will all be in a better position to berate or praise windows 8 accordingly

I'm astonished that Win8 will be Vertical Touch Screen Interface! That's just absurd. The "tired arm" is known as Gorilla Arm and widely shunned as a very bad design for anything more than a few minutes, 'cause after that you can't lift your arms up anymore.

Bloat is not the problem (it apparently uses less memory and starts up quicker than Win 7 does). It's more the way they're trying to ram Metro down everyone's throat, regardless of their setup or what they're using their computer for, how much multitasking they do, etc.

I won't be upgrading either, no pressing reason to.

I never get Mouse Shoulder from using a mouse, as I lay my forearm on the desk. However, I can imagine getting Vertical Touch Screen Interface Shoulder from a VTSI, since the shoulder is what holds up the arm. Not to mention the problems with keeping the screen within arm’s reach, so as not to have to utilize other parts of the body to reach the touching points. I have a 42 inch screen. I am not going to strain my eyes by keeping it 1 foot from my face.

I wont be touching W8 with a barge pole until Im ready to consider a new system build or OS. W8's main selling point seems to be it's suitability for mobile devices, not PCs. All Windows releases are dogged by bugs for a year or so after launch so stick with W7 would be my advice. I bought Vista which ran like a dog and only upgraded to W7 to get away from Vista; having said that W7 is just a finished and polished Vista product.
