Coffee and Tea and the Glorious First of June

    Good Morning, Landrovalrim!

Wilson, sound the trumpets, beat the drums, parade the troops, its a new month!!!! And I hope that it is a good month for all of us. I hope everyone's problems just fade away because Summer is coming!!!

Now, some unfinished business from yesterday. Got home so late I couldnt reply but Slammy, that was an excellent link. In fact, that whole mini war (the war of 1812) may make a great topic for an edjumication. Its kind of a forgotten war, with the exception of the failed assault on Baltimore which lead to Francis Scott Key adapting an old British drinking song and writing the Star Spangled Banner. And the battle of new Orleans was immortalized in the Charlton heston-Yul Brenner movie "The Buccaneer". But most Americans do not realize just how close we came to losing the whole darn thing. There is a school of thought that after burning Washington DC, if British general Ross had not been killed, the whole northeastern seaboard might have fallen, because there wasnt anything there to stop them. But the lack of an aggressive, brilliant field commander to replace Ross paralyzed the British and allowed us to scrape together enough troops to defend against another attack. (Ross had been an able commander under Wellington in Spain)

The British never quite got it right. Napoleon once said that if the British put 100,000 men in the field against him, he could understand that. he could measure the capabilities of his foe and act accordingly. But a British force of 40,000 men at sea, cruising up and down the coast, faking landings everywhere would have given him nightmares because it would have taken 3 times that force to defend against a possible landing. He actually suggested that the British should have nothing but marines!!!! Thats perhaps carrying things a bit far, but they could have driven our people nuts doing that up and down our coast. Hit and run raids until we sued for peace on their terms.

Take care, gotta go to Beardstown today! I like that store so its cool.

***Edit*** I almost forgot. 50 hugs from gombur to anyone who knows where the reference to the Glorious First of June comes from. No fair using wiki!!!!!!

Re: Coffee and Tea and the Glorious First of June

Feels like a random thought day again today...

glad you liked the link Doc. And nice additional facts for the mini edjumication!

    Hope work is going well.

    Greetings to the new guy.

Glorious First of June - sounds really familiar... I'm going to guess Nelson at Trafalgar... then I'm going to go wiki...

Caught #6 last night. Hopefully we've made a dent in the surface population...

    It's Friday!

Delaney - when's the move day?

Welby - been a while since we've seen a machinima. How's the hockey game coming along?

a joke I heard this morning...
A little boy was overheard talking to himself as he strutted through the backyard, wearing his baseball cap and toting a ball and bat: "I'm the greatest batter in the world," he announced. Then, he tossed the ball into the air, swung at it, and missed. "Strike One!" he yelled.

Undaunted, he picked up the ball and said again, "I'm the greatest hitter in the world!" He tossed the ball into the air. When it came down he swung again and missed. "Strike two!" he cried.

The boy then paused a moment to examine his bat and ball carefully. He spit on his hands and rubbed them together. He straightened his cap and said once more, "I'm the greatest batter in the world!" Again he tossed the ball up in the air and swung at it. He missed. "Strike Three!"

"Wow!" he exclaimed. "I'm the greatest pitcher in the world, too!"

    Good day Landroval!

Re: Coffee and Tea and the Glorious First of June

Thanks for opening, Doc! I'd look forward to seeing an edjumacation on the War of 1812, if only to get an American perspective on it. Most folks I know remember it simply as, "That time we kicked the USA's butt" (though as I understand it, the result of the war was more of a stalemate rather than a clear victory for one side over another).

Well, today is uneventful so far. I have my first training session as a librarian on Monday, so I'm looking forward to that, but otherwise it's business as usual around here. Wilson, when you're done with the parade, brew some coffee and set out the pastry hobbit's wares. I'm hungry!

    'Morning, Landrovalingas!

Nope - I was way off on my guess of Nelson... but now I'm reading a whole new set of wiki articles about the Glorious First - Doc - look what you've started!

d'oh - and now you've got me wiki reading another one!!!

some cool quotes on this battle (of Cape St. Vincent) though...

As dawn broke, Jervis's ships were in position to engage the Spanish. On the quarter-deck of Victory, Jervis, Captain Robert Calder and Captain Benjamin Hallowell counted the ships. It was at this point Jervis discovered that he was outnumbered nearly two-to-one:
"There are eight sail of the line, Sir John"
    "Very well, sir"
"There are twenty sail of the line, Sir John"
    "Very well, sir"
"There are twenty five sail of the line, Sir John"
    "Very well, sir"
"There are twenty seven sail of the line, Sir John"
"Enough, sir, no more of that; the die is cast, and if there are fifty sail I will go through them"

    Aye , it's been awhile,..

I do have one in the Queue though...been there a long time,..I was waiting on another player, Harperella, who was composing an original Elvish tune that I was to use,..but it's slow going as there are many composers involved and I am sure it's difficult to coordinate + RL. I do have a back up track I was originally gonna use though,..maybe I will just go ahead and do that.

That said,.I am myself busy in RL.

I find it hard to get into the game anymore as I am more interested, at the moment, in making games, for example the Hockey Game, which I will return to soon. I spent some time finishing up my first experimental game.
I feel like I've taken as far as I want to so yeah,...back to Hockey. and I have another after that, the Dice rpg game,..so I have alot in my head!

    anyways,..busy Friday,..gotta save the weekend!

    cheers all!

Re: Coffee and Tea and the Glorious First of June

Hey all. Winding up my week in San Diego with the new grandbaby and my kids. Had a lovely lunch at a very good all you can eat Japanese/Sushi restaurant with my youngest boys today, then a run to the Japanese market to pickup some items I have not yet been able to find in Austin (though I admit I haven't looked very very hard)

I love the looks of the hoodie, kinda wish now I had gotten one but I have so many jackets.

Welcome to our new poster. Do continue to drop in. The pastries are fresh and the drinks plentiful. They will provide your favorite, even with a drop of poteen if requested.

Cheering Slammy on in his quest. Hoping there is no respawn in that area.

as far as the TootLaB kinhouse I think anyone can open it back up, but if we need a point of contact, I believe Theodora is the kinleader. Garaf, Slammy and Welby have toons in the kin that should also all be officers and Delaney also has full permissions on the kinhouse. I think just pick a person and it should be openable.

Re: Coffee and Tea and the Glorious First of June

Hello all, today I was swamped. Had 10 minutes to eat a sandwich and that was lunch. I finished the morning reports and then gave an orientation to 12 people. A lot...and I'm not big on being in front of people.

Doc, you bring these battles to life for me. Thank you!

Del, those hoodies are really cool but I'm glad I got the t shirt cause it's too warm down here. Awesome job.

Betting your Librarian training goes off without a hitch, Alditha

So, Slammy, if you finish the rat deed, what do you get? *giggles*

Everyone, be happy busy. *Looks at Welby*

    *Hugs and Muffins*
