Saw that too. PvP Arena console play using the main characters of The Hobbit. I'll bet Christpher is spitting nails and the Prof is attempting to come back and haunt WB in the style of Poltergeist/Exorcist/The Shining/Haunting of Hill House. Personally, I hope it's a HUGE flop.
the Alien/WB Frog spoof is Sapceballs is great... maybe thats becasue ive always hated that frog sooo much.

Civ II rules after all these years......
This really anything new. Turbine work on console based MMO many years ago. A lot of us thought the Hobbit were transferred to the new game. Lotro development was told to no longer use any of the Hobbit material. The console game project has been an interesting rumor mill with some people thinking it would a Harry Potter game. Or that I was going restart as a Hobbit game.
From what I've seen a lot of console players like fast action - FPS game play and PvP. Halo is this kind of game. Although I do not have a Xbox. Some of my friends love the Halo multiplayer experience where they get to kill each other.
I do not think a traditional MMO formulation like you see with WoW and Lotro will do well in the console market.
Unless stated otherwise, all content in this post is My Personal Opinion.
I'll pass too. I seriously doubt that this is what the Professor had in mind when he created his universe. Of course, not implying this about Lotro, but a combination of Lotr and Mortal Kombat. Lol...
Chris Tolkien not going to let any one do a comic, cartoon, television show, movie or game using the Silmarillion.
Well, there has been many people wanting Silmarillion the movie. But to be honest, I don't see it as a movie either. If Lotr was hard to adapt as a film for movie or TV, then Silmarillion - as epic as it is - can be called pretty much impossible for that. Maybe a shortie can be done as a small fan made movie out of one of it's stories. But full length commercial production? No, not really.
At least now I can give a proper answer when people ask that again, so thanks.
As for the games, I see Lotro as a better option than a simple combat game. It honors the books much better if there is a lot of somewhat canonical storylines included.
Well, now we see why Turbine doesn't have the MMO license to the Hobbit anymore. WB bought Turbine and took the Hobbit MMO License. At least we know why Turbine won't be tying LotRO into the Hobbit movie.
On the other side of things, if you are wondering where some of our favorite blue names have been hiding out, look for @Frelorn running the forums over there when they come up. He's been doing a good job as CM on many of WBs other game forums.
I would rather see a well made RTS based on Silmarillion, than this concept but could work I know many people fans of this kind of game.
Yeah the Silmarillion is untouchable based on what they will do with it. Honestly I don't want anyone to do anything with the Silmarillion, it's too epic.

Luckily (or unluckily, depending on how you look at it) you will never see the Silmarillion, or anything other than The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings in anything other than book format. At least not as long as Christopher Tolkien is alive.

I want to keep it that way. I mean I like what PJ did with the LotR and I'm eagerly awaiting for the Hobbit, but the Silmarillion is just too much for anyone to try to tackle it on and try to make something out of it. It's too complex, too rich in a historical sense and it's so... important to the history of Middle Earth that there's no way you could make something out of it and stay 100% or even 90% faithful to it and by doing that I think you'd anger many many people who love the book. Plus the sheer amount of characters and events and history is overwhelming. I for one am thankful that Christopher hasn't let anyone play with it. I hope the Tolkien Estate can continue that.

Seconded. And we can keep our Silmarillion based kinships in Lotro anyway.

Just another reason to dislike WB even more.
Well, either someone really likes the idea or really likes WB. Negative rep on that? Seriously? LMAO
Personally, I think the neg rep system is abused far too much.

Laughter is the key to a long and happy life! Because laughter boosts your metabolism, improves your immune system and helps your body to heal itself. Laugh everyday! (plenty of comedy in youtube, for example robin william's stand up shows, the popular sketch: Whose Line Is It Anyway, etc) Scientists have proven that people who live long healthy lives are optimistic, they laugh alot, they are easy going and they have a healthy diet.
Eat healthy...Think happy Thoughts, just relax and be happy, and you will be healthy and happy....

Thanks Nym. LOL I wasn't really all that upset, it just was totally unexpected.
You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Nymphonic again.
Will repay the favor whenever it's deemed appropriate by the powers-that-be. (Dumb rule. )
I agree with ya. It is definitely abused. I had one person (possibly one or two more too) hitting me for bad rep on my '08 Housing Redesign post over in the Suggestions Forum as often as he could. I know who it was because he argued continually for weeks/months? over the way I had posted it to look like an official announcement and some people actually thought that it was. (The fact that it was in the SUGGESTIONS forum and didn't have a BLUE NAME was completely irrelevant to him and a few others.) Unbeknownst to him though, for his every 1 bad rep, there were at least 5 good reps. LOL

I haven't been in LOTRO community forums much - yet, but I have been in forums before with a reputation system. I never liked it, since it was abused even there and then. It's too easy for anyone to do so. I have also been in forums without the reputation feature and reputation still follows it's users - simply because people would already know who you are and what you think.
It doesn't matter so much for me. But I can still start giving positive reps once I'm here, anyway.

That's pretty much why I just let it blow over. I noticed a lot more people like me than can't stand me. Imagine, someone not liking.......ME! A Hobbit at heart!

I have to laugh at the rep thing most of the time. I get the idea and like the intent, but it becomes to much of a popularity contest. I still plus posts when I like something, and think it deserves it. I haven't given out any neg rep, though I have tried a time or two for a couple of real trolls. I just moved up another level, so who knows if I have enough yet or not.
On a technology site I frequent, they used to use thumb up/down to rate comments. If you thumbed down a comment, it would hide the comment. If you thumbed it up, it would stay. I didn't start it, but all the regulars would thumb down most comments so that when you went back to an article, you would only see new comments. When someone new would post a comment, they would complain that none of the regulars liked them and how dare we thumb down their comments. The site has since moved to DisqUs for comments and not turned on the comment rating, but it is fun to remember the outrage from some of the new commenters.
Now back to your usual thread. :-)

Huh, bit of a shame as I was always hoping someone would try and tackle a Children of Hurin film someday.
To the topic at hand. Never understood why fans (or Christopher Tolkien for that matter) get so protective and rabid of Tolkiens work. Ultimately this game in nothing more than harmless fun if the genre interests you and will have zero lasting impact on Tolkiens legacy and works. The game is equivalent to really, really bad fan fiction as is everything else that does not come directly out of Tolkiens estate. Would I like to see the IP put to better use absolutely and the fact it really hasn't up to this point is a disappointment. But if the game entertains people and manages to get a person or two to dive into Tolkiens lore than it's all good in my eyes.
