Thread: Servers down why? Patch notes where? Why does Turbine hate me? 30 May 2012 Edition

Pre-emptive-won't-stop-the-posts-anyway thread for the downtime of 30th May 2012. Title in short English due to space restrictions.

The servers were down for an update to the game. They came back about 10:12 AM EDT.

The patch notes are here.

Turbine specifically chose this day and time for the downtime in order to inconvenience you, personally. Oh, sorry. They do downtime in early morning US to give them the most time to fix things in case something goes wrong and so that any supporting third parties (also US) will be available. Also, while LOTRO is global, it is generally the least busy time.

On a side note, a Wednesday patch is odd, since I've been here at least. Too much beer at the Memorial Day barbeques?

I suspect Turbine had a lot of people off for 3 day weekends. It wasn't possible to do the normal planning and setup for a patch on Monday. The next USA holiday is July 4, 2012?

Appreciate the heads up at the future inconvenience. Please suggest what I can do during this outrage, I mean outage. Should I go read a book? Walk the dog? Participate in personal hygiene?

And they have to make sure to get any final changes in for next Tues/week? Depending on when the RoR pre-order is available, the goodies have to be ready

I have other games i can play, but at that time, 3am for me here, it's no inconvenience for me. I will occupy that time preparing the new list of stuff that get's broken for the betting pool a few friends of mine and myself usually do on patch days.

You make that last suggestion sound like a non solo venture so I would say that that one sounds like it would be the most fun.

And note, please, that as I type it is 9:45 PM Tuesday in the US Pacific time zone, which means 12:45 AM Wednesday in the US Eastern zone. Nobody at Turbine is up yet, so neither are the patch notes. Wait seven or eight hours.

Actually, I think for once they DID choose this time specifically to spite me. It's a punishment for being away from the game for several months. Here I had woken up at 5AM, unable to sleep any more, and decided to check on an alt or two before work -- but the servers are down!

So yeah, my fault, sorry folks.

I don't get bent out of shape over Monday maint, but I much prefer Wednesday as maint day so I can enjoy Mondays when I do take a long weekend. I wish it would stay on Wed.

hmm... on Friday we get server maintenance. Normal maintenance on Monday. No problem,it's a holiday. Now it's not Monday anymore.

We post them at some point during the downtime. Usually before or shortly after 8:00AM local (Boston, MA) time.

As it turns out, BR is not meant for quick bug fixing turnaround. Apparently it's meant as a preview and to find any BIG bugs, not to make sure the release is bug-free.

I don't know, but +rep for a thread title that made me laugh out loud.

I don't think we should complain too much...Diablo III was having some login issues following a patch yesterday and I was passing the time on those official forums. The horror, the horror.

Makes the complaint threads posted here look positively warm and fuzzy by comparison.

They always have the patch servers up for that reason. So you can download the patch while servers are down. So you won't have a delay once the servers are back up.

Yea thanks a lot for this server downtime Turbine I didn't have anything better to do so I learned how to play MacGyver theme song on an electric guitar. Because of the 53 times I had to listen to the song on YouTube, my ears are now bleeding, I am wearing a mop on my head so that I could have a mullet too, I tried to make a bomb out of body lotion, mouth wash, safety pins and an alarm clock (did NOT explode. Instead I now have a sticky alarm clock that doesn't work), and my neighbour is trying to get into my apartment with his chainsaw. Well played again Turbine!

Can somebody remind me under which conditions the default windows launcher will start patching? Is that before or after login these days?

The Linux launcher already patched but the windows thing sits there failing on the login server and doesn't try to patch.

What do I have to do to make the windows thing patch sometime during the day when I'm not there?

Before login. I was able to patch my Windows system around 8 EDT this morning and it worked fine. I just started the launcher and it did its patch thing, before login.
