i am new to the gaurd class so i was wondering what the best soldier for them was. i was thinking a healer for the boosts, a sage for the debuffs, or an archer for the damage, or mabey a bannergaurd. but i want to know what more expireanced gaurds think.
For skirm raids, use an herbalist with the power restoration skills.
For fast soloing, you can also use an herbalist, or a Warrior with lots of AoE skills.
In general, I'd recommend an herbalist. The soldier AI is bad. Herbalists help keep the real players alive and powered, so that smart things can happen.
I use an herbalist for my guard.
That class has two advantages:
1.) It does pretty good heal over time and power restore.
2.) It does not grab aggro from you or any other tank.
They ave fixed this issue in some raids, but there are times when warriors and archers are bad for a group. They attack mobs one does not want touched.
When you are soloing, you can just play in overpower mode. Guardian tactics are worth the extra critical you get when fighting the lieutenants too.
In groups you'll be in shield and weapon mode (sword and board).
Claims made in forums are larger than they appear in real life.
As long as you do not choose protector, you can't really go wrong.
The rest have good and bad points. For faster solo skirms, pick a dps soldier, preferably an AoE one like sage or warrior. That combined with being in overpower will make quick work of a lot of skirms. If you'd rather lower risk or are thinking about skirm raids, then herbalist is a good choice.
1. Choose Warrior soldier.
2. Put yourself in Overpower stance with good 2-hander.
3. Put 'Protection by the Sword' skill on your soldier.
4. Profit.
Forget herbalist. Really. I mean REALLY. It just makes the skirm to go slower. You don't want to be slow. Your guard has a lot of survivability even in Overpower. If you're worried about power, take some regen food, pots, use Take To Heart and Thrill of Danger. So take that dual wielding mofo and plow through mobs.
One day, Overpower will be raid-viable dps stance!
For skirm raids I run with herbalist for reasons mentioned in posts above. However, solo skirms I run with archer. They deliver the highest dps of all soldiers and focus this on single target mobs. I hold all mobs one one spot whilst in OP and whirl away. The archer knocks each mobs off 1 by 1 and takes lieuts down quick when directed.
IMO only high treat classes can make best use of archer.
Has anyone tried skrirming with a bannerguard? I haven't used them before, but I think they have small heals in addition to their buffs, so they may bring slightly more to the table than an Herbalist.
I like to run with a sage, the debuffs will keep you alive and the damage makes things go faster. I tear through t2 skirms with my sage in overpower.
herbalist with the power skills is very nice to have as well.. I actually have both leveled up to around 65 - 70, pick what I want depending on the situation. Whatever you choose you can always level another soldier fairly painlessly.
1. Choose Warrior soldier.
2. Put yourself in Overpower stance with good 2-hander.
3. Put 'Protection by the Sword' skill on your soldier.
4. Profit.

i do not run in op because i run out of power. i choose an herbalist because it can feed me power and morale with out getting in my way. thank you for the suggestions.
For solo skirms I used to run Sage for the AoE DPS but she spent a lot of time rooting mobs, which was useless because the first thing I would do is run up and smash them in the face. (okay, poor soldier skill selection on my part).
After a while i decided that I wanted stuff dead MOAR FASTERER, so I passed up the DPS/debuff of the Sage for the pure DPS of an archer. He's currently at rank 31 across the board but his DPS is a meager 150-180... not fantastic.
I was tempted to run the herbalist for power regen, since our OP mode sucks so bad, but I'm finding with the right trait setup and food I'm not running out of power so much... and I just cant pass up the opportunity to get any additional DPS.
Warrior may be an option but I really want high single target DPS to reduce the number of incoming attacks on me ASAP.
TBH, since the wallet upgrade I just blow stuff up on my hunter and collect the rewards.
Oh, and definitely agree that herbalist is the way to go in raids!
I like the herbalist. Nothing like having your very own private healer. Put on the shield and keep her safe and mow down skirmishes without budging your health. Staying ALIVE is the name of the game for me therefore I use a herbalist.
the best skrmish soldier for a guardian is a bannerguard.
whay?
1) buffs the armour and have armour aura
2) have small HOT(heal over time)
3) doing medium-high damage
the warrior is good if you wanna play raid skirmishes, but for solo skirmish take the banerguard.
herbalist is a joke. he is slowing the game and allways healing himself and not you. don't take it.

Good idea! Though I wouldn't level a warrior just to increase the number of my parry responses and have some more dps.
With the ToO OP gear and some decent jewelery you don't need another DPS in a solo skirm. And in a skirm raid you'll put protection by the sword on the main tank anyhow (if it isn't yourself in which case you'd prefer a herbalist again). So the logical choice for me is the herbalist.

If your warrior has aggro while your playing your guard (either OP or SnB), you are doing it wrong. I believe he meant to use protection by the sword to increase the warrior DPS by 2%.

This is quite subjective. In solo skirms, I tend to think that more DPS is better anyway. This is probably because I rarely feel endangered, and don't feel the need for an herbalist. I guess that the power regen brought by an herbalist is welcomed, but other than that I stick to the mantra "more DPS goes faster". Even if the warrior only brings a little contribution.
With my champion thought, I picked an herbalist. But that is because the additional DPS a warrior would bring me would go totally unnoticed.
I use herbalist.
For solo I go OP and have herb feed me power, and have no complaint
For group herb is a must imho.
But I must say I'm intrigued to try the warrior.
I have not tried a skirm with the 3-pieces from the OP set of Ox-clan, and judging from soloing huorns, power seems not to be such a big problem anymore (not as big as without the set bonus anyway).
So for solo maybe I'll try warrior

Why waste protection by the sword by putting it on the tank and not on a champ ???
I suppose it depends on what size and level skirmish you're running. I end up tanking in level cap skirm raids quite a bit and in this situation I like the bannerguard. The bannerguard doesn't do a lot, but at least when it's maxed out you can give it all defensive traits and it will (mostly)stay alive while providing some group-wide bonuses. The extra armor, evasion and resistance will make you a slightly better tank. Just keep in mind that this particular soldier's AI is designed to pace itself in front of you, and if you don't watch it, it will pull the next trash mob.
