Out of curiosity, what is the best armour a hunter can obtain without completing any group content? That means all solo content and only solo skirmishes.
You can get the Impossible Shot Set- 4/6, which is leggings, boots, gloves, and chestpiece with only medallions obtained from solo skirmishes. The Chestpiece and Leggings are around 1000 medallions each, and the gloves and boots, 725-ish medalions each. Yes it's alot as these are meant to be obtained through the Isen 3-man instances, Foundry 6-man etc.
If you are determined you can do it though, I did this for my Warden, using my Runekeeper (for the massive DPS to make it go alot quicker) 10 skirmishes a day using the instance finder for the xtra morale, power and marks. This took me about 2 weeks total.
For your helm and shoulders, jewellery and cloak, There are very nice crafted pieces, some group content pieces that drop are also bind on equip, so you may find a decent helm or shoulders or cloak on the auction.
Since you said best I'm assuming level cap. I hope this helps
Lynx-hyde shoulders from Galtrev rep vendor is a solid alternative as well.
If you can afford it, the dragon scale cloaks can be traded for....they are expensive but very nice.
If you can do any group content at all...get the Limlight rep jewelry set....it's a must for hunters
Happy hunting
The numerous choices obtained through the moors set. However, the position of hunters is not at its best for the moors at the moment, but it is still obtainable by soloing your way. Similarly, you get a choice of three sets.
I think it is also possible to acquire the Ox Clan instance helm and shoulders (purple) with minimal seals and a bunch of medallions. Not on at the moment, so I can't check, but I think those two pieces are close to/better than the crafted gear. Some seals are available solo too. First Ox Clan quest gets you one seal, I think getting killed by a troll in Fangorn will net you another 5 (or that might be TP).
However, the best bet all around is to scour the AH. There are a lot of decent purple items that raiders don't need that are a big improvement from quest items.
you can but why? isen 3-mans are easily done on t1 and give 100 meds a run at 15 minutes per run. Foundry gives even more but is less pugable. Otherwise be prepared to skirm alot. you get little more than 20 meds a run for t3 skirmishes even with the instance finder bonus. Being that isen 3-mans can give 5x the meds at about the same amount of time, I would make friends with tanks and healers. Also skirmish raids happen quite often and can be done by almost any pug group. especially since only a few skirmishes are failable anyway. There is also really great blue gear that you might win the roll on as well. My boots and shoulders came from skraids. Really unless you are serious about not grouping there is little excuse not to /joinchannel glff and pug. Frankly , I have gotten more meds from a fail pug trying to run foundry than I could from solo skirms, which is sad really. Provided you can at least get to the last boss which is easy enough on t1.
WARNING: leveling a warden may cause you to neglect your other characters.

Maybe he is entirely f2p and doesn't have the TP to get RoI?
@OP, if you're entirely set on skirmishing by yourself, it'll take awhile but you can get 4 of the 6 Impossible Shot gears as well as Star Light crystals for your bow if you get some lucky drops. If you think you can only solo skirm because you're f2p, you can also do raid versions of all the skirmishes if you're willing, giving you access to some decent jewelry and limited gear options as well.
Thank you for some very useful comments, it is good to have more information about possible armour combinations at end-game. I will certainly consider some group skirmishes as the rewards are so much higher.
Thinking about armour, is there a resource, maybe an .xls sheet, that compares the possible armour sets and states what you must earn to obtain them? Thanks for any help.
I can't think that I've ever seen a chart that gathers all the information you are after quite like that, Adrogo. But the wiki can give you a starting point for research:

That's a nice expansion on the armour spreadsheet . It has the look that it has been done by the same fellow that did the LOTRO Gear Comparison one (tho' I suppose there's not a lot of individual design 'flair' you can squeeze into EXCEL ).
