In comparison to most other MMORPG's, the night sky at the moment is in fantastic detail; there are very few (if not any) that use real constellations in the sky. However, it has been the same sky for the entirety of the release (correct me if I am wrong) and since most modern-day-released MMORPG's now come with graphics far superior to LotRO, it would not be bad to see an update to the sky, and to graphics in general.

"The constellations that Tolkien mentions in LotR do appear in-game and in the alignment he describes. Our skies-guru was awesome!"
So there's part of your answer.
Oh and I don't see the stars in the game night sky as floating blobs.
That description makes it seem like you are seeing some sort of blurry image?

The night sky in LOTRO is truly awesome with real constellations and stars. I've never seen any sort of blobs up there. The individual stars are quite discernible. What graphics settings are you using?

It sounds to me as if the lack of resolution is not in Turbine's artwork, but in the OP's client and/or his machine. If he could buy, and install, a better quality graphics card, he might indeed see great things. To me, with my far-from-cutting-edge-by-current-standards graphics card, the stars look like the stars of the real universe, without the obscuring fog we get so much of in the Bay Area.
Honestly, IRL the night sky isnt that interesting....its just black with white dots....I dont know how much more you expect to see in a high-res version, unless you're expecting to see EVE Online type spacescapes. I dont think anyone's going to be setting up telescopes pointed at their computer screens to see the Jovian moons or anything...

Particularly since Galileo won't be born for several Ages yet.
Yeah, I'm guessing it has something to do either with their pc/video graphics card or their in game settings too. On my old pc it couldn't handle running on the higher video settings, so when it crashed almost a year ago and we got a newer computer it was a huge difference when I was able to play on very high settings at all times. It's always fun going back to places I haven't been to in a while (especially when leveling alts) and seeing things on the highest settings. Sometimes looks like a whole new world lol. Sometimes I'll hook up the pc to our big flatscreen tv in our living room, and it's even more amazing to see the higher settings on there. I remember going into Grand Stairs for the first time on the high settings, and it almost looked 3D with the columns and walking along those bridges - and a lllllllllloooonnnnnggggg way down to the bottom. As for making changes to the night time sky - what could you really add? It already follows our night time sky, includes changes in the weather, etc. Maybe an occasional shooting star each night or comet that could last for a few weeks in the night time sky?
Comets and shooting stars would be an awesome addition!
OMG, I would love this!
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, totally worn out & proclaiming "WOW, what a ride!"
Civ II rules after all these years......

Unless somebody has been doctoring my coffee, I'm 99% sure that I've seen shooting stars on numerous occasions. Most I've only seen as a shooting flash on the edge of the screen or in my peripheral vision in those rare times that I'm in 1st-person, but once, just a few weeks ago, it was almost directly in front of me but just slightly off center of my vision. It only lasted for a split second. Anyone else ever see that or am I losing it?

I'll have to keep my eyes out for them. Maybe there are already some in the game. Maybe Turbine should also add a new emote too, "skygazing" or "skygazer," in which your character could lay down on the ground and give your character a point of view of the night sky. If I remember correctly there is already some kind of lie or lay down emote (I haven't used it in a long time though), but I can't remember if the character lays down on their back or on their side. I'll have to check when I log back into the game later today.
I can sadly no longer see stars in the night sky and have no idea why not....the graphics on high generally are still awesome especially water effects, etc....but the cloud texturing is diff and the missing stars are sad...enclosed a couple of screenies of what I used to see. The night sky is now just black for me...if anyone knows how to fix let me know. And the shooting stars/comet event are wonderful ideas.
