Forum Reputation
This community has a lot of great forum contributors! Many players use this site for help, suggestions and commentary about the game that greatly contributes to the quality and satisfaction of playing LOTRO.
I encourage you all to reward their efforts by using the 'Reputation' link at the bottom of their forum post. It is a simple and easy way to tell them 'thank you' or 'well done' for their efforts. In addition to recognition, adding to a poster's reputation also communicates to other readers the value of their contributions (i.e., you can see their reputation level below their names and is an indication of their historical efforts on this site).
See a post that you like or enjoy? Add to their reputation!
Regards,
Fara
P.S. I am not posting this for my benefit - it is a call to reward other players who make this forum a great resource.

Re: Forum Reputation
I don't believe F2P players can give forum reputation though. At least I can't, and I've heard others say the same.

Re: Forum Reputation
There are some very limited situtations in which F2P players can give forum reputation. .. The restrictions aren't published and really aren't worked out clearly. A few of the options are A. You need a minimum amount of reputation to do it B. they've changed the system. C. In addition to A. You need some unspecified number of posts, length of time playing, or some other secret variable.
(Re: B. ...I did it loong before I ever spent a dime on this game..and afew other folks I know did as well.)

Well I for one am finding the reputation on these forums annoying. I put up a suggestion thread. And walaa! Negative rep from two users almost instantly.
Nice to see the function been used to encourage users to have ideas!

It should be expected. That is way USA society works. You take a position that someone does not like. Instead of discussing the topic rationally. They will try to destroy your reputation. Or shut you up. We have become a society of attack each other. Gag the opposition. That behavior is naturally part of our forums. It is just something to get used to. You open your mouth or write in public you are inviting incoming eggs, rotten tomatoes and bricks.
Sadly the concept of "Vote the Bum out" which is a fundamental of the American government system has become the norm for all of our society. You have to be careful what you say because your employer could dismiss you.

I've spent most of my life in the USA. Part of my life in Germany. Most of the dumb dung that Americans do. It is not Americans that do it. It is all of humanity. It is the texture, color and smell that varies between countries and cultures.
I am not familar with the details of how other countries and cultures go about doing it. As an American that has traveled a lot. I am painfully aware that it is best to describe "This is the way Americans screw you" let the locals go "We have a slightly different way of screwing you". The end result is a similar sore rump.

I would hope that someone who has enough rep to be able to neg rep someone would use that power more wisely. Sadly, that does not seem to be the case. I would like to see the rep system revamped, but I'm not sure anything would be any better. Sadly, any rep system relies on the people using it, and can be easy to game.
That said, I would rather be able to up/down vote specific posts and see it on the posts, similar to other forums/comment systems. I would also rather see who up/down votes a post. I would trust an up/down vote more from someone like Yula or Crell over some of the other people on the forums. You would also be able to better see if someone just up/down voting the same person to try and game the system.
An up/down vote system or some sort of poll would also be good for the suggestion forums or petitions, then people wouldn't have to /signed, they could just up-vote the suggestion/petition. It would also make them easier to count. Not that petitions ever do any good.
No matter what kind of changes you make, someone will always find a way to game the system. In a perfect world, people would use the rep system to upvote great posts that help the forums and only downvote trolls, but we don't live in a perfect world, and we are all only humans. At least I think we are all human.

You realy have to be a angry, argumentative, nasty, profane jerk to get a down from me. I rarely use my negative repuation capability. I give positive repuation to posts that are well thought even if I hate the idea. I do not tend to not give positive reputation as much as I used to. I tend to forget about the system.
I do not look at my reds and greens because it tends to annoy me.

Forum rep has strayed pretty far from its original intention. I make every attempt to only use it when posters are being helpful or making really great suggestions, but I also use it when someone really makes me laugh. I try very hard to be an adult when it comes to negative rep and only use it when someone is being a troll/violating community guidelines.
I wish more people would leave comments on their positive reps, because I enjoy reading their thoughts. Sadly, a good chunk of my rep has come from lolcats and other silly pictures, which I suppose is to be expected.Ayrolen-Anikosi-Anfribur-Ametrine-Amari-Ayaneth-Asparagus-Anayalos-Alyradal-Aloe-Asiago-Altanoin

One way that MyLotro forums BETA could help remedy the situation is to ask the user if they really want to assign negative rep. I think the dropdown dialog that appears might confuse some people and they negative rep is by accident.
For instance, I offered a good suggestion that received eight /signed in an hour. In all of this kudos was 1 negative rep, and only 1 positive rep (come on guys, if you're going to sign, give some rep!) I doubt that the negative rep came from a coward who overracted but rather one of the /signed messing up the rep feedback.Laurelin: Bergr
