Random client crashes, I've had enough!

Last night I was supposed to do Rift with a few friends. Everything was fine, until I walked through (I think) the last portal before the last boss. POOF, client crashed!

I've had these client crashes on numerous occasions.

    - standing around ingame, doing absolutely nothing special: POOF, client crashes.
    - walking into a building: POOF, client crashes.
    - alt-tabbing out of the game: POOF, client crashes.

Turbine, could you PLEASE, PLEASE fix these crashes? I'm starting to get to a point where it starts to annoy me to no end!

Re: Random client crashes, I've had enough!

I know it has been an issue for me since RoI was launched. Never had the issue before, now it is an expected occence each and every day I play.

The only thing I found which helps me to reduce the number is MUTING GAME SOUNDS. But then again that makes the world of middle earth very boring to play.

I agree this should be an easy fix since it was something introduced with the RoI update. OK maybe easy is not the right word, but it should be fixable as they have to know what changes they made to the game then.

I had huge problems with the client several years ago, then I switched from the high res to low res version and have never had a crash. You could try that if you are not already using the low one.

I'm having the same problems since i purchased RoI.Never had that problem before.
But now it happens quite a lot of times.
And to be honest it's very annoying when you are doing Instances,Skirms or just helping someone and suddenly get kicked out of the game.

Sorry this is happening to you guys. I wonder why it only happens to some? It must be a very hard bug to pin down, if it is a bug.

I have never had a client crash and i think its cause i always have the latest client installation file, I reinstall LOTRO every few months and just coppy the patch files over again.

I too have had many crashes since the RoI launch until I read the thread below. Try it, I did and now I crash very, very rarely.

    http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.p...32-bit-Windows

The fix in this thread brought my crashes from something that was happening multiple times a session to something that happens every couple of days. It does say in the post that there may be graphical problems but I haven't had any issues at all.

Thanks for posting my thread, palidor. I wish more people would actually spread the link to that thread. I see far too many people still who crash on zoning because they haven't applied the workaround I outline there.

Please, everyone who gets the crashes on zoning: If you have a 32-bit version of Windows and at least 3 gigabytes or more of memory - try out my workaround for it! It really has helped just about everyone that I shown it to. The only people it can't help is those with 2 gigabytes or less of memory.

I was crashing a fair bit before I tried the change that's been posted. It solved my problems immediately, so I highly recommend giving it a try.

Orthanc crashes are based in a Sound file corrupted. if you selects "Mute Game Sounds" in the Audio Options pannel, you won't crash anymore. has been tested my a lot of people and it works like a charm :P

If that were the case then it would be causing people with 64 bit OSes to crash too.

It's more likely that a combination of the sound + text being displayed as you enter + building of the zone/objects causing the size of the LOTRO process hitting the Windows 32 bit maximum of 2gigs is causing the crash.

I don't know if this will be useful, but after the anniversary fest update, I started bluescreen crashing (total system reboot) all the time, mostly when I went through doors, but at other random times as well. Turbine tech support told me to disable my sound card and test the game. Game worked great. Then I re-enabled the card, and since then I haven't crashed once. I have zero technical knowledge, so I don't know if this is remotely helpful, but I figure every little bit of info could hold an answer. Good luck!

Blue screens are not the client crashing. That's the entire system crashing.

Client crashing = LOTRO program dies/crashes/locks up but you're still able to work on your computer and run/close programs.

Blue screen/system crashing = Your system has to be rebooted and everything that was currently running/loaded is gone. You'll have to boot up your system and launch your programs again.

Ok I used to have this issue all the time, Are you using a Creative sound card?..because there has been a issue with that since launch..If you are go to your options and change it to a generic driver, stopped my crashing cold..

Re: Random client crashes, I've had enough!

I too have had this issue since purchasing "Rise of Isengard", and yes I have a 32 bit version of windowsXP with 3GB of memory. With out fail I would crash when starting up "Fangorns Edge" instance. I would also crash in various parts of Dunland.

It wasn't untill someone suggested that I turn off "Ambient Sounds" which I did and the frequency of my crashing seemed to be reduced considerably so I would think that there is an issue connected with the sound files that is causing this client crash.

I haven't tried the quick fix that another posted linked to earlier in this thread though, so I can't verify that method at this time. However as turning ambient sounds off seems to have worked I'll keep to that for the time being. Not a fan of editing .ini files if I don't have to.

I've had the same problems with client crashes since re-installing the game recently. My client used to run smoothly several months ago. I don't ever remember it crashing (even with the RoI expansion). Now, for whatever reason, the game crashes randomly. I run Windows 7 64bit for my OS so I doubt the 32bit workaround will work for me. I hope turbine addresses this issue soon because client instability may cause people to give up on this game, which would be unfortunate. Please address this issue soon, Turbine!

Actually my sister who just got a 64 bit machine started having massive crashes. The fix for her ended up being dropping back to DX9 instead of DX10-11 (dont remember if she had 10 or 11). Now she has no more crashes.
