    can/will combat be modified?

I hate to be one of those that constantly compares one game to another, still that is a way to find out how things are evolving in the MMO gaming industry; recently a new game came out in the market Tera online, though its reviews are not even comparable to LOTRO, its still highly considered due to its new and innovative combat style.

Tera is considered to have raised the bar in MMO combat and later this year Guild Wars 2 has promised underwater combat, once more raising the bar for MMO action.

Combat is but one of the many aspects of MMO gaming that is constantly changing, such innovations transform gaming experience and ( in Tera's case) can make even a dull game fun and adicting.

Although LOTRO is a great game as is, that is no excuse to let dogs lie, improvement can be a good thing; could MMOs like LOTRO improve their combat and gaming experience to level up with the changing times?

    Re: can/will combat be modified?

I can not imagine it happening.

The combat system is a core system:

    1) All the skills, their animations, timing, method of utilization, rotation and effects. They would have have to be changed.

    2) All the mobs would have to be changed.

    3) The AI would have to be updated to deal with the changes.

    4) The content would need to be rebalanced.

    5) The physics engine is designed to support the existing combat system. New physics engine.

Turbine did make some changes to add faster response via immediate and true interrupt skills. It took about 18 months to get it to work properly. Six month of development. 12 months of problems in live that required additional changes.

Many of these systems have to working out long before live launch. The requirements have to have to exist well before the working engine is ready. They have to be in the game before the class designers, quest designers, instance designers, mob designers and artists gets very far on creating all the expensive assets that make up a game.

Bottom Line - It would be an entirely new game designed from the ground up. It would a different IP to keep from canniblizing the existing player base. Turbine working on a console version of their game engine for years now. Gosh only knows when a game that uses that engine will arrive. Since it is a console engine, I expecting more of a fluid FPS combat and movement system.

I can't think of any game online, single player or anything else every tried something like what you are asking. It is always a new game. If it is the same IP by the same company, the game play and combat system is usually very similar. Civilization, Mass Effect, Star Craft ... Completely new game play and combat systems are usually a completely different IP.

Online games seem to be like changing directions on a supertanker moving along on the ocean. It is very slow turn. Beauty upgrades. New Bells. New Whistles. It is still the same old supertanker.

    Re: can/will combat be modified?

I do not see the point of underwater combat. I really do not.

First off even in modern times folks do not fight underwater except for the James Bond movies which is full of it.

Yes there are games coming out with new items / new combat / new whatever. That is the nature of any business. But making changes just because someone else did is not a good reason to major changes to your business.

As far as I am concerned the Batman free flow combat system would be perfect for any game. I expect others games in the future will add this sometime, but I would not expect active games to redesign everything to add it.

The reason you have "Game Name" 2, 3, 4, etc. is because these games made enough money to justify a Complete rewrite. I personally think the current LotRO will run until the end of the contract, 2017 is what everyone posts as the end date. If Turbine and WB can arrange another long term contract I think we might see LotRO 2.

I see this as the Fourth Age adventures as discussed in the Appendixes. With the technology changes that have taken place since this game was designed it will be a completely different game. Hence the 2 at the end.

I don not see the point of MMOs, or candy, or jumping rope or many other things which are simply fun.

Its not like anyone is demanding this for next week, if it is in any way possible they would of course take their due time, quite likely years to do so, on the meantime people would go on playing the game, having fun like allways then when/ if game changes like this should come, people will keep on playing, having fun like always.

You are missing the point. The cost to Turbine is throwing out tens of millions of dollars of completed work. All of which has to be done a second time

Lets say there seven years of work of work in Lotro - 2 years before launch - 5 years after launch. You have to redo half of that 3.5 years. If they start on June 1, 2012, all the staff would be reassigned to this activity until December 1, 2015. That is not feasible. Nobody is going to play a game that gets no updates for over three years. You would need to hire a second development team, which would spend 3.5 years rewriting the existing game. Which would launch with the functionality we have today. It would be missing 3.5 years of content. You could then spend 20 months doing the 3.5 years. The regular team gives you another 20 months worth of stuff to do.

For 3.5 years work of development time - you could write a new game from scratch. Hence most companies go that route.

In the twentysomething years since I began kindergarten, there have been lots of advances in educational sciences and practices. That doesnt mean I'm going to re-enroll in elementary school and do another 13 years, just because the education I'd get now is slightly better than the one I got in the 80s-90s

Nobody would re enroll in elementary school, but any upstanding professional does keep up with the changing times, he/she never stops studying, trying to learn new languages, reading articles of the new advances made in his or her line of work, maybe even taking courses or goes to conferences or seminars if he/she sees the need to, keeps upgrading his/her equipment, and as a fact some do take a sabatical and go back to school to upgrade his/her degree or get a new one in a different field; in conclusion does whatever it takes to stay with the changing times and ahead of the game.

As for education, the education our children recieve is not entirely the education we or our parents recieved, and many teachers do try to raise the bar on teaching methodology.

This happens all the time in the gaming industry whenever a sequel for a new video game is planned, and though MMOS are certainly not the same breed as say "Darksiders" or "Call of Duty", there is no reason why MMO developers should not plan ahead for it, knowing full well how fast the gaming industry evolves.
LOTRO would not exist and certainly WB would not have purchase it if it wasn't making money or if it could not make money from it. Theyll make money from it, they know how.
Regarding the 3.5 years of content, they're professionals they can handle themselves, it can be done.

But if they dont no problem people will play LOTRO, and if people get bored they'll go elsewhere, its just a game not an actual war, its supposed to be fun and, believe it or not, some people have just as much fun making the game, taking on the challenge, as others have playing it.
