For a while now my wife has been having issues where she will log into the game and select a character. From there the game will stay on a load screen for a good while (a few minutes at least) before it is playable. Does anyone know what causes this and what the solution would be for this issue?
Same issue with me now. Login was always fast and easy for years, but lately it takes 5 minutes or more. It really sucks. Wish I knew what was causing it.
Will echo this problem. This has been a problem with me for months. Again the same problem that has been described, used to load super fast now drags on for minutes.
I've always had longer load times, but it's been getting worse. I'm on a very fast connection with a system that doesn't suck, so I don't think the problem is on my end.
I normally open the client, then use my character to enter middle earth while I go make a pot of coffee, paint a masterpiece, win a Nobel Peace Prize, build an ark, and travel around the world in 80 days. Then I come back to wait 2 more minutes for it to load.
I have long loading times as well. Low level characters load very fast, 75s take quite a while. After loading in a 75 however and then logging on other chars, (any level) they load much faster.
Turbine does not give out rewards based on the profit factor; because that would lead to less profit
Is anyone here running addons? I wonder if the extra-long loading screen is caused by (outdated) addons causing memory leaks, or if there is a memory leak when the game first loads...
I usually get to the loading screen, then have a bowel moment while I wait.
Starting having this same problem a few weeks back. Used to be fine and fast. Now it takes a few minutes. I have no addons and I just built this beast of a machine a few months back. Its on their end not ours.
Same here from initial click on Lotro Icon it take better than 5 minutes to load my 75, my lowser characters are not much better. ping www.lotro.com gives around 110 msec
How about a RPG Arrow for the Hunter, specifically for Ettenmoors

this is my scenario, been like that for a couple years.
From how I understand it it has to do with what has been done in that particular character. If the character in question has done every single deed in the game like my main, it will take a long time to load. I'm usually stuck for about 7-8 mins at minimum. The reason would be that nothing is kept on your computer and must retrieve all the information from server side. At least that's what I've been told.

I have a 55 Captain who has basically been powerleveling, picking up whatever deeds I happen to get on my sprint to end game. I have a 75 Hunter who has 10 times the deeds and accomplishments of the captain. However, I noticed very little difference in the log in times.
It really seems that it has to do something with the char "age", how much he completed.
People with SSDs like me won't notice a BIG difference, but it's there.
People with classic HDs usually notice HUGE differences.
My girlfriends main takes forever to load while her other chars load a lot faster. Leveling toons take longer the more they proceed through the game.
On my PC the difference is not as big.
I suspect that when you load into the game, the char gets "created", his bits and pieces get transmitted one by one, followed by local hard disc accesses. One stream of data and one loading sequence might work better.
Another possibility might be that some providers have lower priority for small data packages.
And yep, the game loads faster after it startet caching. It even loads faster after a crash (some data only gets removed from the cache if you restart your computer, I noticed that when due to a bug half my inventory was gone, also after a game restart. But it came back when I restarted my PC).
i have really long loading times since turbine took over the european servers from codemasters
used to take about 20secs to log in, now usually 5-10mins (record so far was 13mins...)
i also noticed that logging in a low lvl char takes much less time then to log on my 75

Ah! That would explain why my completionist character always seems to take longer to load. Good to know.
If the 'more your toon has completed and how a high a level he is' theory is accurate, I shudder to the day when we're about to head into Mordor and we're taking 20m to just LOAD into the game. While its a nifty explanation and it might even be true I certainly hope that's not it. I used to load very fast, then starting with Moria and getting longer with each expansion its becoming a huge and irritating issue. Turbine can't really expect us to be waiting 10-15-20 minutes as more content is released can they?!?
er...nm...of course they can...they don't fix so much else why would they even bother with this?
A fresh, clean reinstall of lotro fixed this for me.
Nope!
This is on Turbine's end.
It seems that, the more "stuff" you accumulate on your character, the longer the login will take. Vault space, home storage, crafting, etc, all takes a huge amount of time to load up.
It's funny. a 13 year old game like Asheron's Call takes SECONDS to log into, while a 5 year old game such as this takes 5 minutes or more.

This is correct, the loading times for higher characters are always be longer and continue to get longer since everything from quest, armor, deeds, even small things like flags/relics esc.. are store server side. So for your toon to cache everytime you log in it has to read and load every bit of info before making the world playable. This is why you can even see every past quest you have done in whole history on the toon. Your completed deeds all x00 amount of them and the x0000 quest you have finish from 1-75 + book.
Something changed in the game recently that made loading of 3D data (models, terrain, textures) very slow on systems with low memory (less than 8 GB or so). The same system still plays fine but loading is snoozy.
A SSD doesn't help either so I don't think it's simple fragmentation of the data files.
Had the same problems as mentioned here when I was still using my hard disk system. Eternal loading times, especially on high level characters.
I got an SSD system two months ago with a fresh Windows + Lotro install and haven't had any severe issues since. No more long loading times, no more crashes when zoning from one area into the next, no more strange dc's.
Loading times on SSD are very reasonable, it takes about 1 min. for my 75's to load, sometimes less.

Try it with a lvl 1 character compared to a 75. There's your big difference.
I don't get what the big deal is. FIGURE OUT A SOLUTION! Do you think Steve Jobs would have said, "ok, the IOS loads ten times slower than the last. Just let all the apple customers deal with it"?
