For me personally, I would not continue to play this game if it wasn't Lord of the Rings. I think this game being based on LOTR gives a nice touch. The only reason I play and continue to do so is because its LORD OF THE RINGS!!!!!!!! Would you still play if it wasn't?
Re: Would you play if this wasn't Lord of the Rings?
I came here because of friends and game play. The IP - LOTR was not considered in the buying decision. I do not buy things because they are made by Apple or whatever. I buy and continue to buy because I like the price, features, how I am treated by the providers employees ...

Re: Would you play if this wasn't Lord of the Rings?
If it were a Turbine game, I would certainly try it out. I am a die-hard Turbine fangrrrl since 1998.
Having played AC1, AC2 beta, AC2 from launch till it went dark, DDO beta, and LotRO since alpha three, I would probably get a beta invite for whatever-it-is-Turbine does next.
I didn't play DDO live; I made a Cleric and played her through the whole beta and never got her out of level 1. I wasn't even able to heal my party all the way through a dungeon; I kept running out of Mana. This was very frustrating. And the people on the forums kept saying, "But!! A Cleric is a Powerful War Mage!" Well, not at level 1 she isn't.
Rumour hath it that Turbine is now working on a console game. I don't know what I'll do if I get invited to test that. How much do consoles cost?
Re: Would you play if this wasn't Lord of the Rings?
Probably. I played this because it has a western art style, rather than the horribly ugly generic asian art rubbish you see in most other MMO's.
When thinking of it, it not being LOTR themed might even be better, because the lore zealots whining about every minor thing for the sake of whining are an annoying and rather frightening bunch.
Re: Would you play if this wasn't Lord of the Rings?
If this were Generic MMO No. 3117, I wouldn't have started playing it in the first place, and instead would have given DDO a whirl instead (I really don't like monthly fee's - Paying an occasional month, sure, but every month? Meh). However if they hypothetically changed the game now to Generic MMO No. 91255 (Lots released in the last four years)... Well... I'd probably take a break, then wander back into it a few months later when it all settled down.

I have a lifetime account so it wouldn't make sense for me to say I wouldn't play. But if I was paying a monthly fee AND this wasn't Lord Of The Rings, I definitely would have quit by now, especially after they added the stupid store.

Re: Would you play if this wasn't Lord of the Rings?
I have been playing LOTRO for 4 years now. Me and my hubby are lifetime. If we were not lifetime, we certainly would not waste any money subbing now. Game used to be so much better. It has been going down hill since Moria. Bugs never get fixed and instead get tucked away under known issues. They seem horribly understaffed I guess, even they must be making lots of money and even have WB behind them now.
Quite a while back now, I and thousands of other players were not given deed TP over a weekend. This was on my prem account. Turbine knew of this problem, but never even put a warning in the launcher WHILE IT WAS HAPPENING so players would know to hold off on deeding. I lost over 150 TP, not much it sounds, but that was a LOT of deed grinding for nothing. Deeds that could not be reset, so no way to get those TP again. Proper response of Turbine to this would have been to just grant 100-200 TP to everyone. Instead, we had to try and get the TP put in via petitions or toll calls to their CS. But premiums are very limited in how we can ask for help. I did what I was able to do, NEVER got that TP. And from the threads I read, most did not, but were told it was the store's fault. Store said it was Turbine's fault. So no one was at fault I guess, eh? This killed a lot of my love for the game.
Also, the forced and rude emotes make me feel angry every time someone pukes on me or knocks my characters down. I hate having to get on my mount every time I am at the vault in the Shire. And I know many other players feel the same as me. Festivals are not fun when someone spams me with a sequence of forced emotes if I am on a character who does not have a mount yet.
But still, the original game is still there. And I love the earlier quests. Running around the shire, it feels like home. World is still beautiful. I am attached to all my characters. So I still play the game. But as someone had in a sig I read here a bit back :
"Love the game, hate the company."
That pretty much sums it up for me. Love the original game, hate the company...
Re: Would you play if this wasn't Lord of the Rings?
NOPE!
I do like the community, but honestly there is nothing this game offers that's appealing besides the tie in with the lore.
So the more in moves away from the LOTR/Lore/RK/Dungland/fellowship/etc. ... the less it becomes appealing.

Um, how do you figure? I think they've done a good job balancing game play and lore. It cannot be a replica of the books, otherwise we'd all play Aragorn or Legolas (there's console games for that). Turbine has to fill in where the lore is vague and they seem to try to stick to the logical. I will always hope that the err on the side of lore vs the flying mount crowd.
Re: Would you play if this wasn't Lord of the Rings?
No. I got this (now) old laptop to play LotRO because it was LotR-based. I hadn't played an MMO before I got the machine.
I don't like the economy or the concept of leveling; or the idea of disposing of legendaries like they were bad pies; or elves constantly hopping in Bree (what is it about elves and hopping??); or a few other things, but I love the graphics and flavour and I'm pleased with how much of the lore they were able to adhere to despite the evidently onerous exigencies of game-play requirements. I love all the little in-jokes and sly asides that get thrown in to remind me of LotR.
I have no regrets about getting my life membership at launch, but I wish I liked the game-play better. I probably wouldn't be playing *any* MMO now if it weren't for the LotR IP here.

Re: Would you play if this wasn't Lord of the Rings?
No, I would not.
Not because there's anything wrong with the game, in my opinion. I mean, there are lots of things I don't like, but that's not why I wouldn't be playing.
If this wasn't LOTR, I would still be happily playing WoW. (No WoW bashing, please.) The IP was the only thing that drew me to this game away from WoW. Though now, of course, I am a bit hooked on the things like cosmetics and the music system. At the time, that wouldn't have made any different to me.

No.

Re: Would you play if this wasn't Lord of the Rings?
Most surely not.
I've been playing LOTRO for 4+ years now, and the main reason I keep on playing is because this game is based on the Lord of the Rings.
I've been playing MMOs since Ultima Online was first released and I've played most MMOs from then on. In fact, I still play UO, and for the same reason I still play LOTRO: I play UO because I love the lore, the places, etc., just like I play LOTRO because I love the lore, the places, etc. In fact, I believe UO has many mechanical advantages over LOTRO. But different philosophies, so that's fine -- not a problem.
Back on topic: To be quite honest, I have never thought about leaving LOTRO till this past week.
U7 was (is!) really bugged. And for some time now I feel that we players are treated by Turbine like beta testers instead of players or paying customers. Draigoch has got into my nerve so badly that it's hard to keep putting any money into this game.
And then you find that the only way to get the best cloak this days is to have the Draigoch one... But if you want one, you have to buy scales on the AH, because the instance bugs whenever people try running it...
And then there's the Hunter, my favorite class from day 1, broken beyond salvation. It's light-years away from getting any real attention, relegated to a dev who doesn't care about it, doesn't understand it and who has most obviously never played a Hunter before -- nor any other class, for he doesn't know the Hunter's place among all other classes.
And then there's the Moors... As a Hunter in the Moors, it's hard to go around looking for action. It's near impossible to play solo. Even if you trait for Morale, Medium armour feels useless after the first few hits. And don't start about Audacity...
You may think the Moors is not broken, but then you find out that Rank has become useless. The new armor sets don't require Rank, which means anyone can have them. Ok, I can understand that, Turbine is trying to bring more people to PvMP as a freep. But you cannot barter your old armor, the pieces you had to grind for, for the new ones... In other words, Turbine is saying: "So you are an old PvMPer? That's your problem, dude! Open up space for new blood!"...
So to summ things up, I am thinking about leaving LOTRO. Some broken things are never fixed (Draigoch, Hunters), I feel players are treated as beta testers, not customer (I am a paying customer and I demand Turbine treats me as one! So get Draigoch fixed!), old players don't get the respect they deserve (Turbine could really make old, specific armour pieces like the Moors ones "bartable" for the new ones) and so on and so forth.
Almost all of my friends have left the game for the reasons I mentioned earlier and many more.
EDIT: Oh, I said one of the reasons I still played this game was the lore, isn't it? Well, I just remembered the Golden Wood is NOT guarded anymore... So much so for lore... ¬¬

Re: Would you play if this wasn't Lord of the Rings?
I doubt it. I only heard about this game because it was being talked about in my LOTR-fannish corner of the internet, back in the day.
I can't say with certainty that I wouldn't be playing *any* MMO today if it wasn't for this one: I'd considered (and still do consider) trying WoW at times. I probably will, eventually, regardless of this game's existence (I'm a lifetimer here, anyway, so I can leave for a while if I want, and come back whenever I feel like it until the servers shut down).

The Golden Wood is still guarded. I went by there today and there were 2 Sentinels at the gate by Talan Haldir. In addition, there were 4 Orc bodies lying nearby with Elf arrows in them.

Re: Would you play if this wasn't Lord of the Rings?
Absolutely not, this company has a horrendous copy-paste "lol its content guise now money plx". That and countless broken promises and a QA team that either works on the store and the store alone (god help us if it goes down) or is entirely nonexistent.
The name is people I like are the only reason I stay. And they won't be here much longer.

Re: Would you play if this wasn't Lord of the Rings?
It's dificult to say, because if it wasn't Tolkien based I might never have played it, certainly I'm having some trouble playing it still with lag issues etc but like many people it's where I hang out with other people, I do know if I was still paying to play I would have ceased subscription.
Re: Would you play if this wasn't Lord of the Rings?
I'm not entirely sure, to be honest. I like some of the classes A LOT, but Turbine loves to drag out the gameplay and nerf things important to classes. So maybe I play because I like the classes I play, and because I love The Lord of the Rings.
This game isn't the worst MMO, but it has a lot of room for improvement. Balance for starters, and then REAL raiding.

NO MORE LEGENDARIES - This isn't a job, it's a game.
Re: Would you play if this wasn't Lord of the Rings?
I was really into GW before I came here. The only reason I left GW for Lotro was because of my interest in the works of JRR Tolkien. There are some things I really like about this game and then there are some things - not so much. But it is my love for Middle-Earth that keeps me here.
