Well...on a side note, nothing is forever. Even mountains become oceans after many years...

The sun in our solar system will eventually run out of fuel (millions of years later), so earth will be well...(fill-in-the-blank)

On a micro level, the average human lifespan is about 80years average...hence life is precious...

If life's a garden, family and friends are its flowers...

12/21/12 will definitely be the end ......... for all those who have made a living from "doomsday" predictions.

Unlikely. They'll find another date to latch onto, there will be those who believe them and life will go on.

The only reason this is being discussed is because:
The Mayan ran out of stone
    The Mayan died.
The Spaniards invaded before the Mayan could finish.
    The Mayan's chisel broke.

I remember watching some documentary on Fox or something on 2012. Nothing is going to happen; it is just going to be a fun, ordinary day and I will be in England then, celebrating Christmas and New Year's with my husband and his family... maybe playing a bit of LOTRO as well.

Yeah, i don't think it's going to be the end of the world. But if they keep on predicting it, the whole world is going to cry wolf one day, as in if there is a meteor actually coming to earth, no one will belelive it because we have predicted the end of the world so many times already.

The Mayan "end of the world" has already happened thanks to the invention of both Daylight savings and leap year, both of which did not exist during the Mayan time period.

Let's move on to another end-of-the-world event shall we?

If there is one thing which has baffled many archeologists and scientists is that the mayans have an incredible knowledge of the cosmos despite the fact they do not have any of the modern technology (such as satelites and telescopes, etc) that we have.

Very puzzling....Oh...well...no one on earth knows....Seriously, no one will every know how the mayans possess such sophisticated knowledge that is many years ahead of their time. One can only speculate...

So did the Greeks. And also, back then you didn't have street lights so the night time sky was very clear and easy to see.

Their having a lot of knowledge of astronomy is not that far fetched.

The funny thing is, it's 100% certain that one day it really will be the end of the world, but it'll be predicted accurately by people with real scientific equipment, not any ancient civilization. I suspect it's nothing that any of us need worry about though. We have far more important issues to deal with such as lag and the release date of GW2

Mayans are not unique in that regard. A great many ancient cultures had sophisticated knowledge of the stars and planets.

Re: Countdown to 21st December 2012: Are you ready? (for another ordinary normal day)

Well, lets use some common sense, okay?

The date is corrct, cause the calender is ticking and counting to this day. But of course,
21.12.2012 is a nice number to play with. It could very well be 3 3 2 3, what could be 66 in occultism.

But all our calenders are basd on observations of the sky and stars. There fore a similarity between all those systems is given by nature

But you are in luck. Because I know the meaning of the mayan calender I can share that knowledge with you.

Like many sane people say. What the calender predicts is 'change' not an 'end' of something. Its the biggest change in history if you want.

The date the mayan calender points to is nothing less then the middle of the livespan of the entire universe. Wich means on the 21.12.2012 the universe will be in existence as long as it was in existence till that day. Thats basicly it.

While nothing will really happen, I think we can consider our selfes lucky to attent this moment in time.

And of course, this event can have a special meaning for those of us who happen to have there 33th birthday this exact year.

How did the mayans and ancient cultures gained that knowledge? Tenthousand generations of observation and even longer periods of record keeping done by cultures and civiltsations we simply cant imagine.

Well actually Mayans are pretty epic in that regard, they not only observed the planets, they made calculations. Sure Egyptians did and other cultures but Mayans excelled at it, thats is a difference I think, besides that you are right.

Re: Countdown to 21st December 2012: Are you ready? (for another ordinary normal day)

The Mayan Calendar is not a calendar as we know it. It's based on a cycle that returns to its beginning every 20,000 years or so. They never predicted an end. There IS NO END in a cycle. It only starts again.

Saying it is an 'end' is like saying December 31st is an 'end'. Sure. It's an end of 1 year. Then we start again. Think of the Mayan Cycle as one giant 'year', and Dec 21, 2012 as being like a really big New Year's Eve reset calendar wise.

Now, of course, the Maya were superstitious people and believed each new cycle began with a big change or remaking of the world. But that doesn't mean they were right. No Mayan existed the last time the cycle changed over, so this was largely a wild guess about a date so far away that they never expected any of their people to see it.

Now, on another note (about this whole 'leap year' thing), the Mayan Caledar was not tied into any of our silly modern Calendars with leap years and stuff because they had already accounted for the extra day per 4 years (which is partly their claim to fame, having a more accurate calendar than even our modern day versio). So, yes, their date for the beginning of the new 'Long Count' is December 21st, 2012. Their calendar was and is impressive because it held up to long calculations perfectly by adding the leap year day every 4 and even addressing the addition of the accululation of the over run that leads to adjusting for another day when calculated out over centuries.

But what does it mean for us?

    Zero.

What would the Maya expect if they were still around on December 21st, 2012? Nothing. There is no documented Mayan writing that proclaims a catastrophe when the cycle renews. Just change. And change happens all the time.

You may want to reexamine that a bit. The Mayan's didn't account for anything other than a long-count calendar system which had absolutely nothing to do with their other two more people-oriented calendars and was only used as a mathematical basis and had almost nothing to do with actual calendar cycles.

So no, Mayan's did NOT account for Leap Year in their 'final' calendars. But due to the Roman implementation of the original Leap Year in the Julian Calendar, our implementations of Daylight savings, and various other time-based adjustments, the Mayan calendar (the one the general populace is latched onto using for doomsday) has already 'ended' around 4-6 years ago.

There are also plenty of articles and thesis out there disputing the accuracy of the Mayan's system when compared to Julian and even the Gregorian systems.

The Mayan calendar is more precise because its not divided in decimals like we use, it uses hexagesimal and infinitesimal system so yes its more precises, even atronomical events are precise even that precise that they built pyramids to play with the shadow of equinox every minute! you see a serpent going down the stairs in Chichen-Itza.

About the end of the world, anyone here read the popol-vuh? its a Mayan book about the origin of the world and the cycles, sure they believe in cycles but also they believed in races of people wiped out, the men made of wood, men made of mud, etc.

Mayans combined Myth with Math, so its difficult in what degree they were right about the "end of days" for mankind, I for one give them the benefit of doubt until that day.

I hate to be the one to break this to you, but the Mayan Calendar exists separate from the Julian and Gregorian calendar, and therefore, when this end of the cycle is correlated to our modern calendar, it is done so by modern historians, archeaologists and scientists. Therefor, the Dec 21st 2012 date is accurate because it is only a correlation made by modern scholars.

The Mayans count days in the long count. So, if we start from a known date on their caledar based on astronomical events described for that date, and count forward IN DAYS to the end of the long count, we get a number of days.

Then, one of our modern scholars matches that up to the number of days that will have passed on OUR Calendar to find where that Mayan end date falls.

So, unless OUR scholars didn't account for our own leap days and our entire date system is off by '4 to 6 years' and we are really in the year 2008, then the date of 12/21/2012 is the correct one.

Even if it isn't the correct date, it means OUR calendar is off and we're really living in 2008.

All the Maya did was say "In this number of days, our calendar cycle ends". So, unless Western history losy 4 to 6 years somewhere, the date is correct.

Unless you are saying the total number of days from a set date is less than the number of days that have actually passed and somehow our scholars were working with the wrong data... but that's a tough sell. Remember, people write wacky theses all the time. Doesn't make them true. I'd really take a longer look at this before posting again if I were you.
