Thema: Update 7 black screening.

Ever since update 7 while running Lotro my computer will black screen then shut it self down with no warning. I had this problem before but I switched to DirectX 9 and the problem was fixed. Also my CPU usage is going insane, most of the time it's at 60 - 80%. When I use detect optimal settings it puts them at very high, but I normally bump them down to medium with high model detail.

I tried turning my options down to very low to see if that would stop the problem but it didn't. My CPU usage climbed to 70% after 2 - 3 minutes and I then proceeded to turn the game off before I got another black screen.

this is completly normal CPU usage, any game or software you use will use as much or as little CPU time as it requires, as you play any game CPU usage will fluctuate anywhere between 0% and 100% usage.
0% is bad and will result in the game\app freezing, at 100% the game should be running normaly, it may start running slower but it shouldnt cause any issue so long as your heatsinks\fan are working correctly.

same again with memory, memory usage will usualy increase as you play the game but over time the memory usage should be increasing and decreasing, if memory usage only increases then this is a problem, but you may need to monitor the game over a few minutes to notice if the memory usage is working as it should.. if you alt tab out of your game and assuming your not running in windowed mode memory usage should decrease after a few minutes, you may also notice it increasing and decreasing

cant tell from your dxdiag but if your using 32bit windows, you have too much ram if you are, you may find this thread helpful... well 64bit windows usualy says 64bit in dxdiag Workaround for Client Crash to Desktop in 32-bit Windows


if your only symptom is a black screen this is most likley a fault with your graphics drivers crashing, you may notice an error pop up saying your drivers have crashed and recovered, you should also notice an error saying the same in windows event viewer

if you do see an error about your drivers crashing try reinstalling graphics drivers.
failing that try using older graphics drivers
uninstalling and use driver sweeper and rebooting before reinstalling

I don't get any errors, the computer will just shut down instantly and start back up like nothing ever happened. Also when I talked about my CPU usage, I mean it's never in the 60 - 70% range normally. Most of the time it's quite lower.

Edit: I'm using 64 bit windows.

I got the same exact issue here, had zero problems logging in and playing for x amount of time before the update 7. Now I log in, get passed the choose a world and am black screened then pc reboots.

Im on Windows xp though and my husband has the exact same system as I do, same programs same drivers same everything. Yet he can log in without a hitch.

Apparently I just got some garbage download and he got lucky.. Joy!


Just posting so the original poster knows, YOU are not alone! Just delete the game, and re download it if you should choose to try again. I just really highly doubt there will be any tech support on this at all. If there is, great.. Just dont really count on it.

I can't get in the game at all after Update 7. Just noticed in the source folder that there's a Steam dll - all my games that use Steam don't work, so I'm guessing that this is happening with LOTRO as well now. Well, that's another VIP you've lost, Turbine. Don't know why you had to change things.
